If VLC audio is late, advance it; if it is early, delay it. During playback, VideoLAN documents J to move audio earlier and K to delay it. If dialogue already matches the picture but subtitles do not, adjust subtitle timing instead. The exact menu labels and shortcut behavior can vary by Mac build, so use the equivalent synchronization control in your installed version if needed.

First identify what is out of sync

Watch a short stretch with clear dialogue and compare the sound with the speaker’s mouth movements. Note whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the gap grows as playback continues. Then check the subtitles against the spoken words: VLC has separate timing adjustments for subtitles and audio/video.

  • Audio is late: dialogue follows the visible mouth movement; audio needs to move earlier.
  • Audio is early: dialogue comes before the visible mouth movement; audio needs to be delayed.
  • Only subtitles are wrong: spoken dialogue matches the picture, but subtitle text appears too soon or too late.
  • The mismatch grows: playback begins in sync but gradually diverges, unlike a steady offset.

VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 adjustment guide documents separate audio/video and subtitle synchronization controls.

Adjust VLC audio timing during playback

With the video playing, press J to move audio earlier or K to delay it. Make a small adjustment, listen to another line of dialogue, and repeat only as needed. The change adjusts playback timing; it does not rewrite or repair the video file.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

If the keys do not work, or you want to enter a specific offset, open VLC’s Track Synchronization control and use its audio synchronization value. VideoLAN’s desktop guide describes the generic route as Tools > Track Synchronization > Synchronization; Mac menu organization can differ, so look for the equivalent control in your installed build or consult its help and shortcut preferences.

Change subtitle timing separately

If the sound matches the picture and only the captions are early or late, leave audio synchronization alone. Use VLC’s subtitle synchronization adjustment instead; VideoLAN documents subtitle timing keys and a numerical subtitle offset in the synchronization controls. This avoids moving dialogue out of alignment while trying to correct text.

When a simple offset does not hold

The same file repeatedly needs correction

If one particular input file keeps requiring a fixed audio adjustment, check VLC’s Audio desynchronisation compensation setting. VideoLAN’s VLC Media Player FAQ identifies this setting as relevant when the input file is the source of the problem. Be cautious with a permanent global offset: it may improve that file while making other files play out of sync.

The problem appears with several files or outputs

If the issue is not limited to one file, compare playback under another audio output option as a later diagnostic. VideoLAN’s FAQ suggests trying another audio output plugin, but it does not specify current macOS choices in the cited guidance; avoid assuming a particular plugin or menu path is available on your Mac.

Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter
  • The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
  • Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.

Playback is also choppy

Choppiness is a separate clue, not proof that synchronization is the cause. VideoLAN notes that framedropping can make playback choppier under some conditions when the CPU is overloaded. Treat this as a playback-smoothness diagnostic rather than a guaranteed way to fix an audio offset.

The mismatch steadily grows

A growing gap differs from a constant offset, so repeatedly applying a fixed correction may not hold. VideoLAN’s clock-architecture documentation explains that synchronization coordinates streams and that clocks can drift. It describes VLC 4.0 architecture, however, and does not establish the cause of a particular Mac’s playback problem or diagnose VLC 3.x behavior. VideoLAN describes the clock as “the element that manages the synchronisation of all ES, notably audio and video (+subtitles) synchronization.” See its clock-architecture documentation for that technical explanation.

SABRENT USB-C to 3.5mm Audio Adapter, USB Sound Card, Mono Mic (AU-UCMA)
  • USB TYPE-C CONNECTOR, SO CHECK YOUR PORT FIRST: The AU-UCMA ends in a USB Type-C plug on an integrated cable and connects to the USB-C port on a laptop, desktop, or tablet. It does not fit a rectangular USB-A port; if that is the port you have, our USB Type-A Sound Adapter (AU-MMSA) is the model to buy instead.
  • STEREO HEADPHONE OUT, MONO MICROPHONE IN: Two separate 3.5mm analog jacks, one stereo output for headphones or powered speakers and one microphone input. The microphone jack is MONO, a single channel, not stereo, so it suits a headset or a desktop mic rather than a stereo source.
  • 24-BIT/96KHZ AUDIO, NOT 16-BIT/44KHZ: Input and output both run at 16/24-bit and up to a 96KHz sampling rate, where many USB audio adapters stop at 16-bit and 44 or 48KHz. This is an external sound card with its own audio chip, not a passive cable.
  • PLUG AND PLAY ON WINDOWS, MACOS, AND LINUX: No drivers to install and no external power needed, since the adapter is bus-powered and uses dynamic power-saving modes. It also supports iPadOS/iOS and Android, though mobile support depends on the host device's USB-C port, so check your phone or tablet first.
  • ALUMINUM SHELL, BUILT TO TRAVEL: A lightweight aluminum alloy body gives you durability and heat dissipation, and the USB Type-C cable is integrated, so there is nothing extra to carry or lose. Register your product on the manufacturer's website for support and warranty registration.
