If an Unreal Engine 5 game starts stuttering after an update, shader or graphics pipeline compilation is one possible cause—not a guaranteed diagnosis. A hitch that happens the first time a new effect, material, or area appears can fit that pattern. Stuttering that repeats on later visits or continues after a restart calls for broader, game-specific checks.

First, work out when the stutter happens

Shader compilation can create processing spikes and momentary hitches, according to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.8 performance documentation. Unreal Engine’s PSO precaching and caching systems are designed to prepare graphics states ahead of use and reduce runtime compilation hitching, but they cannot guarantee that every needed state is ready.

Updates may change game content or rendering code. Epic notes that a bundled PSO cache may need updating after such changes in its UE 5.8 guidance on bundled PSO caches. The timing alone does not prove the update caused a shader problem.

  • Hitching on first use: Note whether it appears the first time a particular area, material, or visual effect loads, then eases on repeat visits. That pattern is consistent with runtime compilation, but does not prove it.
  • Hitching every time: If the same spot stutters on repeated visits or after relaunch, investigate beyond shader warm-up, including the game’s own support guidance, its files, and relevant driver or system behavior.
  • Hitching everywhere: Record whether the problem began after a game update, engine update, or GPU-driver update, and whether it affects one game or several. These details help support teams narrow down the cause.

Try the least disruptive checks first

1. Let explicit shader preparation finish

If the game displays a shader-compilation or preparation step, let it complete before judging performance. Epic Player Support says Fortnite’s first match can still stutter while the client compiles new shaders. That is specific to Fortnite and should not be treated as a guaranteed behavior or wait time for every UE5 game.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Clear a shader cache only when the game or vendor guidance fits

Cache-clearing instructions are not universal. Epic’s support article about Fortnite stuttering heavily on DirectX 12 addresses repeated DirectX shader recompilation in that specific case. It says to close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher before clearing the shader cache. Follow the article’s current steps only if your issue matches its Fortnite/DX12 scope.

NVIDIA separately documents how to delete NVIDIA shader-cache files and restore Shader Cache to Driver Default. This applies to NVIDIA’s driver cache, not every game or graphics vendor. Deleting a cache means it must be rebuilt; repeatedly clearing it without a matching reason can bring back compilation hitches rather than solve them.

3. Verify Steam game files when file problems are plausible

For a Steam installation, open Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam describes this as a file-integrity check, not a direct shader-stutter fix. Steam also cautions that some files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files. See Steam’s guidance on verifying installed files.

If stuttering persists, give support useful details

  • Exactly when and where the hitch occurs, whether it repeats on later visits, and whether it began after a game, engine, or driver update.
  • Whether you verified Steam files or followed a cache-clearing procedure that specifically applies to your game and GPU vendor.

Epic’s UE 5.8 developer guidance on bundled PSO caches recommends checking graphics API support and cache activity, then correlating new PSO events with hitches. If there is no PSO evidence, it points developers toward CPU profiling. These are developer diagnostics, not tools every player can access; provide the symptom details and let the game’s support team decide which checks apply.

Avoid fixes that the symptom alone cannot justify

The official guidance here does not establish registry edits, third-party cleaner utilities, forced graphics APIs, or replacing a GPU as generally applicable fixes for post-update stutter. Avoid making those changes based only on when the problem began. Use the game’s own instructions and support channel for steps specific to its build, graphics API, and hardware.
