For a French manicure made with regular polish, use a small cleanup brush lightly dampened with acetone or nail polish remover to refine an uneven tip or lift stray polish. If the cleanup disturbs the sheer base color, touch it up, let the layers dry, and then apply top coat. These steps are for regular polish; they do not establish how to safely correct cured gel.
Choose the repair based on what went wrong
- Wobbly smile line: Carefully trace the edge with a small cleanup brush and a little remover to refine the curve.
- Polish outside the tip: Lift the stray polish with the brush. Cleanup is easier while regular polish is still wet, according to Essie’s French manicure instructions.
- White polish dragged into the base: Clean up the edge, then touch up the sheer base shade if it has been disturbed. L’Oréal Paris’s French manicure guide notes that the base may need a touch-up after correcting an imperfect line.
If the polish has been disturbed across much of the nail, a partial touch-up or repaint may be more practical than trying to reshape the line. There is no established cutoff for when to choose one over the other.
Fix a regular-polish French tip
- Use a small brush and a light touch. Dip a small nail cleanup brush in acetone or remover, then trace the uneven edge or remove stray polish. Use only enough liquid to make the brush damp; avoid flooding the nail or surrounding skin. L’Oréal recommends a small brush dipped in acetone for correcting an imperfect tip, and Essie recommends a cleanup brush with pure acetone.
- Restore the base if needed. If cleanup removes or smears the sheer base shade, carefully touch up that area with the base color.
- Let the repair dry before sealing. Wait for the polish layers to dry, then apply top coat according to the polish directions. Essie advises applying top coat once the polish has dried.
- Moisturize after using remover. After the manicure is dry, apply cuticle oil or hand cream. Essie recommends both as aftercare.
Do not apply regular-polish cleanup advice to cured gel
Regular polish can be refined with a remover-dampened brush, but the cited cleanup instructions do not establish a safe way to correct cured gel. OPI’s French manicure tutorial is a gel application process with curing steps; follow the directions for the specific gel product instead of assuming regular-polish cleanup will work.
Acetone can contact and dry the surrounding skin. The American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance is specifically about removing gel polish, not a complete protocol for routine spot cleanup; it advises limiting skin contact, washing after acetone exposure, and moisturizing cuticles and surrounding skin. Read its gel-removal guidance for that context.

Make the next smile line easier to draw
If freehand tips are difficult, French manicure guide stickers can help section off the area for a fresh application, as L’Oréal Paris describes. Use them for a redo or your next manicure, not to repair dried smudges. They help with line placement but do not guarantee a perfect result.
For a gel application, OPI describes using the precision corner of its brush to place color into the corners and shape the smile line. That technique belongs to its gel process and should not be treated as universal instructions for every polish or product.
