If you are checking email on an iPhone, first identify whether you are using Apple Mail or another mail app. For Apple Mail, troubleshoot its Fetch and notification settings and confirm how your email account is configured; Thunderbird desktop settings apply only to the desktop app.
First, check which mail app is on your iPhone
Look at the app name and icon you tap to read email. If it is Apple Mail, your iPhone is using Apple’s mail app to access your account—not Thunderbird for iOS. This distinction matters because Apple Mail’s settings and Thunderbird desktop’s settings are separate.
Mozilla’s Thunderbird FAQ says iOS development is in progress and that “When it is ready for users there will be a public announcement.” The FAQ was last updated June 23, 2026. The official Thunderbird for iOS project repository describes the project as “Not yet functional or ready for production use.” A Thunderbird blog post dated October 1, 2026 says the app is being built natively from scratch, with a first version for community testing targeted in the next few months. These are development updates, not instructions for configuring a released app.
A Mozilla Support forum question about missing folders on several devices illustrates the common mix-up: the user clarified that the iPhone app was Apple Mail, not Thunderbird. The useful question is whether the mail apps on your devices access the same account and server-side folders.

For Apple Mail, check delivery and notifications
Apple Mail’s message retrieval and its notification alerts are related but distinct. An account may retrieve messages on a schedule rather than through Push, and alert settings determine whether incoming mail produces a notification. Apple notes that when Push is unavailable as an account setting, the account defaults to Fetch. Fetch does not guarantee immediate arrival; timing depends on the selected settings and the email provider.
- Open Apple’s current instructions for changing Mail Fetch and notification settings. Follow the screen path for your iOS version, since labels and menus can change.
- Check the account’s available retrieval method. If Push is not offered, review the Fetch setting and understand that new messages may not appear immediately.
- Review notification settings for Mail and the relevant account or mailbox. Confirm that alerts are enabled in the places you want them to appear.
- Send a test message to the account and observe both when it appears in the inbox and whether an alert arrives. This helps separate a retrieval delay from a notification-setting issue.
Check whether all devices use the same account setup
Thunderbird desktop, Apple Mail, and any other client each connect to an email account using a configuration chosen for that account. Mozilla explains that IMAP lets a mail client access messages stored on the mail server. IMAP is generally the relevant setup when you want devices to work with server-held messages and folders; POP is another possible configuration and does not provide the same shared-server model in every setup.

Check your provider’s own configuration instructions and confirm the incoming-account protocol in each mail client. If a folder is missing, check whether it exists in the provider’s webmail and whether the affected client is configured to show or subscribe to it. Using IMAP alone does not guarantee that every folder, read status, or other state will match: provider behavior, folder subscriptions, and client configuration can matter.
Mozilla’s overview explains how IMAP synchronization works. Use your email provider’s current instructions for the exact server and account settings; do not guess them from another service’s setup.

Thunderbird desktop: check new-message handling separately
If new messages are delayed in Thunderbird on a computer, inspect the desktop account’s server settings. Mozilla documents both a periodic check for new messages and, for IMAP accounts, the option “Allow immediate server notifications when new messages arrive.” That option uses IMAP IDLE and depends on support from the mail server.
- In Thunderbird desktop, open Account Settings and select the affected account’s Server Settings.
- Review the periodic new-message check and the option for immediate server notifications, where available.
- Compare the incoming server configuration with your provider’s current instructions. If a setting is unclear, use the provider’s documentation rather than changing values by trial and error.
These are desktop controls. They do not establish what settings a future Thunderbird iOS app will offer, and they do not control Apple Mail’s retrieval behavior.

If Thunderbird desktop still cannot receive mail
Mozilla’s desktop receiving-mail guidance recommends verifying the incoming server settings against the provider’s information and considering whether network or security software is interfering. A firewall, VPN, proxy, antivirus product, or internet service provider can affect a desktop mail connection. Check these possibilities only when the desktop app is the one failing; do not transfer desktop troubleshooting toggles to iOS without guidance for the iPhone app involved.
Use Mozilla’s troubleshooting steps for not receiving messages in Thunderbird alongside your provider’s setup information. If the same account also fails in the provider’s webmail, the problem may not be specific to Thunderbird.
