If your browser says “Your connection isn’t private,” don’t enter a password, payment information, or other sensitive data, and don’t bypass the warning as a routine fix. Check the exact error code, confirm your device’s date and time, and see whether the warning affects one site or several. If the site’s certificate is untrusted or does not match the address, the site owner or service administrator must fix its HTTPS configuration.
What “Your connection isn’t private” means
The warning means your browser has not established the expected private connection to the site. Google Chrome Help explains that a full-page error can point to a problem with the site, the network, or your device (Google Chrome Help: Check if a site’s connection is secure). It is not proof that every page is malicious, but it is a reason to stop before sharing sensitive information.
A full-page privacy warning is different from a “Not secure” indicator shown beside a site address. Chrome says that on a site without a private connection, someone may be able to view or change information sent to and from the site. The site owner needs to secure that connection with HTTPS.
How to troubleshoot the warning safely
- Read the full message and note its code. Look for an error such as
NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALIDorNET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID. The precise wording and available controls differ by browser and device. Keep the warning in place; do not submit personal information. - Check whether it happens on one site or many. If only one site triggers the warning, its certificate or configuration is a likely place to investigate. If unrelated sites are affected too, a device or network issue becomes more plausible. This is a diagnostic clue, not a certainty; Chrome identifies the site, network, and device as possible sources.
- Verify your device’s date and time. Incorrect clock settings are one possible cause of certificate warnings. Correct them if needed, then reload the page. This check will not resolve every certificate problem.
- Consider the network you are using. On a public or managed network, the network may require a sign-in page or apply filtering. If you are unsure, ask the network administrator. Do not install an unfamiliar root certificate or disable browser or security protections in response to an unsolicited prompt.
- Contact the site owner or service administrator if the certificate is wrong. Include the address you visited and the exact error code. The operator needs to serve a certificate trusted by the browser and covering the hostname you entered.
- Retry after the responsible party fixes the issue. Reload the site once the device, network, or site configuration has been corrected. Bypassing the warning does not repair its cause.
What common certificate errors point to
Untrusted certificate issuer
A browser may be unable to trust the authority that issued a certificate, including when a certificate is self-signed. Alibaba Cloud describes this issue in the context of an HTTPS listener and recommends using a certificate from a trusted certificate authority for a public service (Alibaba Cloud: “Your connection is not private” error after associating CNKIT with an HTTPS listener). For a site visitor, the appropriate action is to report the warning to the site operator rather than trust an unfamiliar certificate.

Certificate name does not match the address
A certificate must cover the domain or IP address used to reach the service. If its Subject Alternative Name (SAN) does not include that hostname or IP, Chrome may show ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID. Palo Alto Networks documents this error for access to a GlobalProtect portal and recommends a certificate whose SAN matches the portal address (Palo Alto Networks: Fixing ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID when accessing GlobalProtect Portal via web browser). A certificate for one domain does not automatically cover a different domain or an IP address.
Device, browser, or server issue
Wrong device time, outdated browser support, antivirus settings, an expired or missing certificate, and server problems are among the possibilities Microsoft lists; these are troubleshooting possibilities, not a diagnosis of your particular warning (Microsoft: What Does It Mean If Your Connection Isn’t Private—and How Can You Fix It?). The exact error code and whether other sites are affected can help narrow down whom to contact.

Why bypassing the warning is not a repair
A bypass only changes whether you proceed despite the failed security check; it does not make the certificate trustworthy or correct a hostname mismatch. Alibaba Cloud explicitly describes its Chrome bypass workaround as not fixing the underlying issue and not recommended for production. For an ordinary visitor, the safer course is to leave the page and contact the site or service administrator.
