Maven can then report Selenium, Byte Buddy, classifier, or Java-module conflicts. Start by printing the resolved graph, choose one Selenium release line, remove or isolate PhantomJSDriver, and align the Byte Buddy artifacts selected by that line.
What is actually conflicting?
Three pieces are often mistaken for one problem:
- Selenium API versions: PhantomJSDriver 1.2.0 is a 2015-era artifact whose published POM brings Selenium 2.41.0 compile dependencies. A current
selenium-javadependency brings a much newer API and module graph. - PhantomJSDriver: this binding is for the discontinued PhantomJS/GhostDriver route. Its transitive Selenium dependencies are the usual reason Selenium 2.x and 4.x artifacts appear together.
- Byte Buddy: Byte Buddy is the JVM runtime code-generation library published as
net.bytebuddy:byte-buddy. Selenium or another test dependency can also bringbyte-buddy-agentor a JDK-specific variant. Maven must select one compatible set.
Maven resolves one version for a given coordinate, but that does not make old and new Selenium APIs source- or binary-compatible. A successful dependency resolution can therefore be followed by compilation, class-loading, or module-access failures.
1. Inspect the resolved dependency graph first
Do not guess which declaration “wins.” Record what Maven actually selected, including omitted conflicts:

- Both Selenium 2.x and Selenium 4.x artifacts, or different Selenium modules at different versions.
com.github.detro:phantomjsdriver:1.2.0and the Selenium 2.41.0 modules it introduces.net.bytebuddy:byte-buddyandnet.bytebuddy:byte-buddy-agent.- Messages such as “omitted for conflict,” “nearest,” a classifier mismatch, or a Maven Enforcer dependency-convergence failure.
If the project uses Gradle, generate the equivalent evidence with:
./gradlew dependencies --configuration testRuntimeClasspath
./gradlew dependencyInsight --dependency selenium --configuration testRuntimeClasspath
./gradlew dependencyInsight --dependency byte-buddy --configuration testRuntimeClasspathKeep the first stack-trace cause, not only the final Maven or JVM message. It identifies whether the failure is version selection, a missing class, a linkage error, or Java module access.
2. Choose one Selenium architecture

The long-term default is the first path. Selenium’s Java installation guidance uses a build tool and the org.seleniumhq.selenium:selenium-java dependency. Its upgrade procedure changes the Maven Selenium version and then runs mvn clean compile.
3. Fix a modern Maven project
Make selenium-java the intentional entry point
Define one Selenium version in the parent POM or the application module, and use that property consistently. The exact 4.x release should be the one your Java runtime, browser drivers, and test framework support; do not mix release lines merely because Maven can resolve them.

</dependencies>In a real POM, define selenium.version once with the tested release value in your project’s dependency-management section; the property above illustrates the single-version pattern rather than prescribing an unverified current release. Remove separate, directly declared Selenium 2 modules unless a specific library requires them and you have deliberately isolated that library.
Remove PhantomJSDriver when it is not mandatory
Delete this dependency from the modern module:

</dependency>Then migrate the test to a supported Selenium browser driver or to a RemoteWebDriver endpoint. GhostDriver documentation describes PhantomJS remote-WebDriver mode and notes that the latest stable GhostDriver is embedded in PhantomJS, but that legacy route does not turn the PhantomJSDriver binding into a Selenium 4 binding.
If another library pulls it transitively
Run the verbose tree and identify the parent dependency. Add an exclusion on that parent for the exact PhantomJSDriver coordinate, then keep selenium-java as the direct Selenium entry point. Exclusions should be based on the coordinate shown by your tree; do not exclude an arbitrary Selenium module and hope the graph becomes coherent.
4. Preserve a required PhantomJS test without contaminating modern tests
If a legacy test cannot be retired, put it in a separate Maven module or profile. The modern module receives only the selected Selenium release. The legacy module owns PhantomJSDriver and its old Selenium dependencies, and it is built and run independently.

- Create a separate module with its own test source set and POM.
- Declare PhantomJSDriver there and inspect every Selenium transitive dependency it brings.
- Use explicit exclusions only after confirming the tree, then provide the versions that the legacy code actually compiles against.
- Do not publish the legacy module’s dependencies as runtime dependencies of the modern application.
- Run the legacy profile separately and document the Java version and PhantomJS executable or remote endpoint it requires.
Do not assume that excluding Selenium 2.41.0 and forcing Selenium 4 will make PhantomJSDriver compatible. Its classes were built against the older API, so isolation is safer than cross-generation substitution.
5. Align Byte Buddy and its variants
After Selenium versions are coherent, inspect Byte Buddy independently. Keep one intentional version of net.bytebuddy:byte-buddy and, if required by your test stack, a matching net.bytebuddy:byte-buddy-agent. Use Maven dependency management to override a transitive version only after checking that the selected Selenium and test libraries support it.
A Selenium issue opened on 2026-04-16 describes a subtle Enforcer case: changing net.bytebuddy:byte-buddy from 1.18.5 to 1.18.8-jdk5 can make Maven treat the JDK-specific variant as greater than managed 1.18.8. The result is a dependency compatibility complaint even though the numeric release appears close. Treat the classifier or variant as part of the identity when diagnosing it.
Use this pattern in dependency management, replacing the properties with versions validated for your build:

</dependencyManagement>If Enforcer still reports byte-buddy versus a JDK-specific artifact or classifier, find the dependency introducing the unwanted variant and exclude it there. A Selenium driver POM may already demonstrate exclusions for Byte Buddy artifacts; copy the principle, not an exclusion list from an unrelated project.
6. Clean, compile, and verify the selected graph
- Delete stale output with
mvn clean(or the equivalent Gradle clean task). - Refresh dependencies if your build cache may contain old metadata.
- Run
mvn clean compile, followed by the project’s normal test command. - Run
mvn dependency:tree -Dverboseagain and confirm that the modern module has one Selenium release line and the intended Byte Buddy artifacts. - Exercise a real browser session or remote endpoint; compilation alone cannot prove driver compatibility.
If the remaining error is a Java module-access exception, capture the first “caused by” entry. Only then evaluate module-info.java or a narrowly scoped --add-opens option. There is no single module flag established for every Selenium, Byte Buddy, and PhantomJS combination.

Build reliability, performance, and maintenance
- A dependency-tree report is diagnostic work performed at build time; it does not add browser runtime overhead.
- One managed Selenium line and one intentional Byte Buddy set make clean, repeatable builds more likely than relying on Maven’s nearest-wins choice.
- An isolated legacy module increases build configuration, but prevents PhantomJS dependencies from destabilizing current browser tests.
- PhantomJS support carries ongoing maintenance risk because its driver artifact is from a 2015-era line. Treat continued use as a compatibility exception with an exit plan.

FAQ
Can Maven’s nearest dependency rule safely choose between Selenium 2 and Selenium 4?
No. Nearest-wins only determines which artifact version is selected; it does not make APIs from different Selenium generations compatible. Make the release line an explicit project decision.
Do I need both Byte Buddy and byte-buddy-agent?
Only if a library in your test stack requires the agent. Confirm that requirement in the dependency tree and keep versions aligned rather than adding the agent speculatively.
