Install Poppler’s command-line utilities in the same environment that runs your PDF code, then make sure that environment can find pdfinfo. On Ubuntu and Debian, install the poppler-utils package. On macOS, install Poppler with Homebrew. On Windows, install a suitable Poppler build and add its bin directory to PATH, or provide that directory through your PDF library’s configuration. Installing the Python package pdf2image alone does not install the Poppler executable.
What the error means
The message PDFInfoNotInstalledError: Unable to get page count. Is Poppler installed and in PATH?, or a shorter error such as pdfinfo not found, means the program tried to launch the pdfinfo executable and could not locate it. pdfinfo is distributed as part of Poppler, a system utility suite. In a common Python workflow, pdf2image is only the Python wrapper; it calls Poppler programs such as pdfinfo and pdftoppm underneath.
Databricks Knowledge Base describes the dependency this way: “The required tool, pdfinfo, comes from the poppler-utils Linux package, which must be installed using a system package manager like apt-get.” The practical fix is therefore a system installation and an environment check, not another pip install alone.
Check the failure before changing anything
- Run the command-discovery check for your operating system:
command -v pdfinfoon Linux or macOS, orGet-Command pdfinfoin PowerShell on Windows. - If a path is returned, run
pdfinfo -v. A version banner confirms that the executable starts. If the command-discovery check fails, continue with the platform instructions below. - Make the check from the same shell, notebook kernel, container, virtual machine, or service that runs the PDF program. A working command in your personal terminal does not prove that a managed job or web process can see it.
Ubuntu and Debian: install poppler-utils
Use the distribution package manager to install the utilities. The package name is poppler-utils, not merely poppler.

sudo apt-get install -y poppler-utilsVerify the installation in the same environment:
command -v pdfinfo
pdfinfo -vThe first command should print the executable path, and the second should print Poppler version information. If your application is running in a container, execute these commands inside that container or add the installation to its image build. Installing the package on the host does not make it available inside an isolated container.
macOS: install Poppler with Homebrew
Install Homebrew’s Poppler formula, then verify that the shell can resolve pdfinfo:
brew install poppler
command -v pdfinfo
pdfinfo -vIf you installed Poppler while a terminal, IDE, notebook server, or background service was already running, restart that process. Environment changes are read when a process starts, so an old process can retain an earlier PATH.
Windows: install Poppler and expose its bin directory
Windows does not have one universally authoritative Poppler binary source. Obtain a build appropriate for your organization and architecture, then identify the directory containing pdfinfo.exe. Add that directory’s bin path to the user or system PATH, or use the application’s explicit Poppler-directory setting when one is available.
- Extract the Poppler distribution to a permanent location rather than a temporary downloads folder.
- Open the Windows environment-variable editor and add the distribution’s
bindirectory toPath. Keep existing entries intact. - Close and reopen PowerShell, Command Prompt, your IDE, and any service that launches the PDF code.
- Verify discovery:
Get-Command pdfinfo
pdfinfo -vIf the command still is not found, inspect the directory you added and confirm that it actually contains pdfinfo.exe. A PDF library that accepts a Poppler path can be pointed directly at that directory, avoiding a global PATH change.

Conda: keep Poppler and Python in the same environment
The pdf2image installation guidance supports installing Poppler from conda-forge and the Python wrapper separately:
conda install -c conda-forge poppler
python -m pip install pdf2imageActivate the environment before testing:
conda activate YOUR_ENVIRONMENT
command -v pdfinfo
pdfinfo -vOn Windows, use Get-Command pdfinfo instead of command -v. If your notebook uses a different kernel than the terminal where you activated Conda, install and test Poppler in the kernel’s environment, then restart the kernel.
Use the installed executable from Python
After Poppler is visible on PATH, a basic pdf2image conversion needs no special Poppler argument:

Check the environment that actually runs your code
Virtual environments and IDEs
A Python virtual environment controls Python packages but does not automatically install system utilities. Install Poppler at the operating-system or Conda level, then launch the IDE from an environment that inherits the corrected PATH. If the IDE was open during installation, restart it.
Containers
Put the Poppler installation in the image used by the application. For a Debian- or Ubuntu-based image, the relevant build step is:

&& rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*Test with docker exec (or an equivalent shell inside the running container) so you are checking the deployed filesystem, not the host.
Notebook and managed jobs
Install the package through the platform’s system-dependency mechanism or initialization script, then restart the cluster, kernel, or session when required. A package installed on a separate driver, laptop, or interactive shell is irrelevant if the failing task runs on another worker image.
Web services and scheduled workers
Service managers often provide a smaller environment than your login shell. Confirm pdfinfo from the service’s runtime and, if necessary, configure an absolute Poppler path in the application rather than relying on an interactive shell profile.

Troubleshoot the common post-install failures

Reliability and maintenance practices
- Run a startup check such as
pdfinfo -vin deployment diagnostics so a missing system dependency is detected before a user submits a document. - Build Poppler into the same image or machine that executes the conversion. Treating it as a host-only installation is a common source of environment drift.
- After changing
PATH, restart long-lived processes. Workers, notebook kernels, and service managers do not necessarily reload environment variables. - Keep the PDF wrapper and system utility installation steps separate in setup documentation. This makes a fresh workstation, CI runner, or container reproducible.
- Use the explicit Poppler-directory option when a service must run with a tightly controlled environment and cannot safely modify global
PATH.
Poppler itself is a local dependency, so fixing discovery does not require a network request for every page conversion. Installation time and disk use depend on the operating system and package source; the error is not evidence of a particular performance or licensing problem.

Frequently asked questions
Is pdfinfo a Python module?
No. It is an executable supplied by Poppler. Python libraries can invoke it, but they do not replace the system utility.
Why does the error mention page count?
Libraries commonly call pdfinfo first to read document metadata, including the number of pages, before rendering those pages.
Do I need Poppler if I only extract text from a PDF?
Not necessarily. The dependency applies to workflows and libraries that invoke Poppler tools; a different PDF parser may use another implementation.

Can I solve this by reinstalling only pdf2image?
No. pdf2image is a Python wrapper; install Poppler’s utilities separately and make pdfinfo visible to the executing environment.
What should I do after adding a Windows PATH entry?
Close and reopen the shell, IDE, notebook server, or service that launches your code, then run Get-Command pdfinfo again.
Why does it work locally but fail in production?
