The error means your deployed Vercel function contains Playwright but not a Chromium binary it can launch. Install a browser revision that matches your pinned Playwright version and make sure that binary is included in the Node.js function bundle, or use playwright-core with a serverless Chromium package such as @sparticuz/chromium. Do not rely on a browser cached on your laptop or on a local Chrome path.
What the error actually means
Playwright’s JavaScript package and its browser executable are separate deployment concerns. Every Playwright release expects particular browser revisions; installing the npm package alone does not guarantee that Chromium exists in a Vercel deployment. The local cache created by npx playwright install chromium is not automatically proof that the same files are inside the deployed function.
A second common cause is playwright-core. It intentionally does not download or select a browser. Its launch() call needs either a compatible executablePath or a supported browser channel. Playwright warns that arbitrary executables are used at your own risk and that its bundled browser is the safest pairing.
Choose a deployment strategy

Fix A: bundle Playwright’s Chromium
1. Pin the versions
Commit your lockfile and install one Playwright version consistently in local development, the Vercel build, and the runtime. When you upgrade Playwright, install Chromium again because browser revisions change with Playwright releases.

npx playwright install chromiumIf your project uses a package manager other than npm, run its equivalent install command, but keep the same locked versions in the build environment.
2. Use a Node.js function
Browser processes need Node.js APIs. Configure the route or function for the Node.js runtime, not Edge. A minimal Next.js route looks like this:

}3. Verify the deployment artifact
The browser directory must be present in the generated Vercel function output. Inspect the build output or tracing information rather than assuming that a cache from your workstation was uploaded. If the executable is absent, the function will fail even though import { chromium } from 'playwright' succeeds.
Log the resolved executable path, Playwright version, and Chromium package version in a protected diagnostic path. Compare those values between a working local build and the deployed function without exposing secrets.

Fix B: use serverless Chromium with Playwright Core
This route supplies an executable path designed for serverless environments and the launch arguments it needs.
Install production dependencies
npm install playwright-core @sparticuz/chromiumKeep both packages in dependencies, not only in development dependencies, because the deployed function must load them at runtime.
Launch with the resolved path

}The package extracts its compressed binary to /tmp/chromium on first use and can reuse that extracted file during a warm invocation. Treat the Playwright, playwright-core, and Chromium package versions as one compatibility set: pin them, update them together, redeploy, and run a launch smoke test before shifting traffic.
Vercel limits that can make a correct setup fail
- Function size: Vercel’s standard maximum compressed Node.js function bundle is 250 MB. Remove unused browser engines and ship Chromium only when possible.
- Large-function beta: Vercel announced a 5 GB package-size beta for eligible Fluid Compute projects on June 29, 2026. It is not the default limit and requires the appropriate project configuration.
- Memory and duration: Browser startup, page scripts, and large documents need realistic memory and execution-time settings for your plan. A function can deploy successfully and still terminate while Chromium starts or a page loads.
- Runtime: Use Node.js. Edge functions are not a drop-in environment for launching Chromium processes.
Deployment checklist
- Pin Playwright and the Chromium provider in the lockfile.
- Install the matching browser during the build, or install
@sparticuz/chromiumas a production dependency. - Confirm the route declares the Node.js runtime.
- Inspect the generated function artifact and confirm that the executable or serverless package is included.
- Record package versions and the resolved path in a safe diagnostic endpoint.
- Set memory and duration high enough for startup and the target pages.
- Send a smoke request that launches Chromium after every dependency upgrade.
- Close every browser in a
finallyblock.
Troubleshooting decision tree
“Executable path does not exist”
The browser was not installed, was installed into a cache that was not deployed, or was excluded by output tracing. Re-run the build install step, inspect the function output, and print the path returned by chromium.executablePath() when using @sparticuz/chromium.

“An executablePath or channel is required”
This is expected when playwright-core has no browser selection. Provide the path returned by await chromium.executablePath(), or switch to the full Playwright package and deploy its matching browser.
The function exceeds the size limit
Remove Firefox and WebKit if they are unused, keep only Chromium, and check which dependencies are copied into the function. If your project is eligible for the large-function beta, verify its configuration; otherwise consider @sparticuz/chromium-min with a separately hosted pack.
Chromium reports missing shared libraries
The executable may target a different operating system or runtime image. Do not copy a locally installed Chrome binary into the deployment. Upgrade the paired serverless Chromium and Playwright packages, then retest on Vercel’s Node.js runtime.
It works locally but fails after deployment
Compare the runtime OS, lockfile versions, environment variables, resolved executable path, and actual bundled files. A successful local launch proves only that your local machine has a usable browser; it does not prove that the Vercel artifact does.

Cold starts are too slow
Serverless Chromium may need to extract its binary on the first invocation. Keep the package set small, avoid installing browsers you do not use, and measure startup separately from page navigation. Warm invocations can reuse the extracted file, but you should still design for a cold start.

Keeping future upgrades safe
Playwright’s browser revisions are part of its release contract. Upgrade the Playwright package and its browser provider as a unit, regenerate the lockfile, deploy to a preview environment, and run a real request that launches Chromium and visits a representative page. Roll back the complete set—not just one package—if the smoke request fails. This avoids the unsupported combination of a new automation library and an unrelated system browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 5 GB Vercel package allowance apply automatically?
No. The 5 GB figure belongs to an eligible Fluid Compute large-function beta announced on June 29, 2026; the standard compressed Node.js function limit remains 250 MB unless your project is configured for that beta.
What does @sparticuz/chromium-min require that the regular package does not?
It requires you to host the Chromium pack separately and make that remote pack reachable from the function. Without that external pack, the minimal package cannot provide an executable.
Should I copy the Chrome binary from my development laptop?
No. A local binary may target a different operating system or library set and may not match Playwright’s expected revision. Use the browser installed for the pinned Playwright release or a serverless Chromium package.
