If requests-html raises a missing Chromium error when you call render(), first determine whether Chromium failed to download, was downloaded into a different pyppeteer cache, or exists but cannot launch. Those are different failures with different fixes. Run a minimal render in the same Python environment as your application, save the complete traceback, and follow the matching path below.
Why requests-html needs Chromium
requests-html uses Chromium through pyppeteer to render JavaScript. A normal HTTP request can retrieve the original HTML, but it does not execute page scripts; render() starts a browser to produce a rendered page. The requests-html documentation says the first render downloads Chromium into a pyppeteer directory. That means the initial run needs working network access and a location the Python process can write to. See the requests-html documentation and the requests-html project.
A message mentioning Chromium does not, by itself, identify which stage failed. A download error, a cache-location mismatch, and a browser startup failure should not be treated as interchangeable.
Reproduce the error in the environment that runs your app
Use a small script in the same virtual environment, container, notebook kernel, or system account as the failing application. This helps distinguish an installation problem from a deployment-specific difference.

session.close()Run it with the interpreter used by your application, for example python reproduce.py. Keep the complete traceback, including the first exception and any nested pyppeteer or Chromium output. The final lines alone may hide whether the failure happened during download, lookup, or launch.
If the script succeeds but the application fails, compare how each is started: Python executable, environment variables, user account, working container or host, network access, and writable directories. Do not assume that a browser downloaded by one user or environment is available to another.
Identify which Chromium failure you have

These are diagnostic categories, not proof of a particular cause. For example, network restrictions or a proxy are possibilities when a download fails, but the traceback and environment determine whether either is involved.

Fix a failed first-time Chromium download
- Confirm the failure is during download. Look for download or network errors before changing browser settings. The documented first-render behavior is to obtain Chromium through pyppeteer.
- Check outbound access. Confirm that the machine can reach the browser download host used by the installed pyppeteer version. If the application runs behind a proxy or firewall, check its outbound rules and proxy configuration with the person who manages that environment.
- Check write permissions. Ensure the account running Python can create files in pyppeteer’s browser-storage location. A download may fail or be unusable if the process cannot write there.
- Retry in the same environment. After correcting a confirmed network or permissions issue, rerun the minimal script and retain the new traceback if it still fails.
The pyppeteer repository describes a first-run Chromium download of approximately 150 MB. Treat that as an approximate project statement, not a guaranteed current download size; the actual download can vary with the pyppeteer version and configured revision. The repository also documents a pyppeteer-install option. Check the instructions for the version actually installed before using it; a separate install command does not fix a blocked download or unwritable storage.

If Chromium was downloaded successfully but the application says it cannot find it, check whether the download and application use the same account and runtime. A local terminal, notebook kernel, scheduled job, container, and hosted service can each have different home directories or filesystem lifetimes.
- Check the Python interpreter and packages. In the failing environment, run
python -c "import sys, requests_html, pyppeteer; print(sys.executable); print(requests_html.__file__); print(pyppeteer.__file__)". This shows which interpreter and installed modules the command uses. - Check the browser storage configuration. The pyppeteer 0.0.25 API reference documents
PYPPETEER_HOMEas a setting for browser storage. If it is set, confirm its value is intentional and that the process can access that path. The reference is old, so verify the setting against your installed pyppeteer version. - Use one consistent environment. Download and render as the same user in the same environment, or configure a shared, persistent, writable browser-storage location supported by your installed version.
- Repeat the minimal render. A successful render in the application’s actual runtime confirms that the cache can be found there; it does not prove a different deployment has the same configuration.

Fix a Chromium launch failure
If the executable is present but exits, this is a launch/runtime problem rather than a missing download. A historical requests-html issue opened February 28, 2018 shows Chromium closing with exit code 1 after download. It illustrates why download success and launch success are separate; it is not evidence of a current universal fix.
- Read the whole launch error. Note whether it identifies a missing shared library, permissions, a process restriction, or another startup failure. Do not infer a specific cause from the phrase “Chromium error” alone.
- Check platform and runtime dependencies. The requests-html documentation warns that Linux may require additional packages for pyppeteer, but it does not provide a complete current package list that applies across distributions. Consult the requirements for your OS, distribution, installed pyppeteer version, and deployment image rather than applying an unverified generic
aptcommand. - Check container or hosting restrictions. Confirm that the runtime permits the browser process to start and has the required files and permissions. A minimal local machine and a restricted hosted environment may behave differently.
- Use the exact exception to choose a fix. Change one relevant dependency or environment setting at a time, then rerun the minimal script. This makes it easier to tell whether the change addresses the observed failure.
When to inspect pyppeteer download settings
The pyppeteer 0.0.25 API reference lists PYPPETEER_HOME, PYPPETEER_DOWNLOAD_HOST, and PYPPETEER_CHROMIUM_REVISION. These can matter when the traceback points to a storage location, download host, or revision. They are not general-purpose fixes for every missing Chromium error, and the cited reference is old.

Check package versions and maintenance status
Compatibility advice must distinguish the projects and versions involved. The requests-html README states Python 3.6 and above; the pyppeteer repository describes Python 3.8 and above for its repository version. Those statements refer to different project/version contexts and do not establish that every requests-html release works with every pyppeteer release.
The pyppeteer project repository says, “This repo is unmaintained and has been outside of minor changes for a long time.” Check the versions installed in your own environment and their dependency constraints rather than assuming current compatibility from either project’s general README. If you rely on this stack in a maintained application, factor the project’s stated maintenance status into your choice of browser-rendering approach.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reinstalling packages without checking the failing stage. Reinstallation will not resolve an outbound download block, a different cache directory, or missing runtime dependencies by itself.
- Assuming a completed download means Chromium can launch. A present executable can still exit before rendering.
- Assuming one OS command fits every Linux system. The available requests-html documentation does not establish a complete universal package list.
- Changing revision or host settings preemptively. These settings can introduce a different mismatch if the error does not point to them.
- Checking versions outside the application environment. A system Python can have different packages from the virtual environment, notebook, or container that actually fails.

Does requests-html use Chromium for every request?
No. The browser is used for JavaScript rendering through methods such as render(); an ordinary request can fetch HTML without rendering it in Chromium.
Does downloading Chromium prove the missing-browser issue is fixed?
