What the error means
wkhtmltoimage is invoked with an input and output, in the form wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>. It reads an HTML input file and renders it as an image. The operating system starts the program with an execution call that carries the argument list and environment. If those data exceed the platform’s permitted size, the OS can return E2BIG; a shell may display that as “Argument list too long.” The Debian wkhtmltoimage manual, Linux execve documentation, and POSIX exec specification describe the input-file interface and the execution limit.
This can happen before wkhtmltoimage starts. For example, a shell might expand a wildcard into thousands of paths or substitute an entire HTML document into a command argument. The limit applies to arguments and environment data together, not just the HTML string. GNU Coreutils notes that when a command exceeds the OS limit, the shell reports the error. GNU Coreutils FAQ
The same command can therefore work on one machine, in one shell, or under one service and fail in another. Platform limits, environment size, and process settings differ.

Fix one oversized HTML render
- Write the document to a file. Save the HTML as
page.html, or create a private temporary file if the document contains sensitive data. - Pass the short file path. Run
wkhtmltoimage page.html page.png. Replace the names with your actual input and output paths. - Keep bulky content out of arguments. Put CSS, JavaScript, and large data in files or serve them as resources instead of embedding their contents in a shell command.
- Check local-resource access when needed. If the HTML references local files, consult the manual for your installed build. The Debian manual lists
--enable-local-file-accessand the narrower--allow <path>option. Permit only the directory the render needs, and account for the security implications of letting the renderer read local files. wkhtmltoimage manual
For example, if page.html refers to files below /srv/site/assets, an invocation may use --allow /srv/site/assets if that option is supported by the installed build. Confirm the actual option behavior and policy locally; do not grant access to a broader path than necessary.
Fix a command that expands to many inputs
A command such as wkhtmltoimage *.html output.png is not a batch-conversion interface. The shell expands *.html before starting the program, so a large directory can create an oversized argument list. Also, a single wkhtmltoimage invocation expects an input and an output; it does not turn an arbitrary list of HTML files into separate output images automatically.
Process files one at a time with safe filenames
For arbitrary filenames—including spaces, tabs, and newlines—use null-delimited input rather than splitting paths on whitespace. This Bash example creates one PNG per HTML file in pages and stops at the first conversion failure:

doneThe quoting keeps each pathname as a single argument. If different directories contain files with the same basename, this simple output naming scheme can collide; preserve relative directory paths or choose unique output names in that case. The loop’s read -d '' form is a Bash feature, so use Bash explicitly for this example rather than assuming every POSIX shell supports it.

Use xargs only when its input handling fits
GNU xargs can split null-delimited input into bounded invocations. For example, when a conversion wrapper or script is designed to accept one input at a time, xargs -0 -n 1 limits each invocation to one input item; GNU xargs -0 -s 50000 can also impose a command-size bound. Choose a size below the platform’s available headroom, not at the reported maximum. Directly calling wkhtmltoimage still requires assigning an output path for each input, so use a small script or loop when outputs must be named individually. - Never build a shell command by concatenating unquoted filenames.
- Use null-delimited records when filenames may contain unusual characters.
- Batch or iterate so every process gets a modest argument list.
- Ensure every input maps to a distinct output if overwriting would lose results.
Measure the likely cause without relying on a magic threshold
On systems that provide it, getconf ARG_MAX prints the advertised maximum for argument and environment data. On Linux, applications can query the limit through sysconf(_SC_ARG_MAX); the effective limit is related to the process’s stack resource limit and kernel constraints. They do not establish an exact safe command length: argument and environment accounting, pointers, executable path, and platform rules also matter. Leave headroom and use files for large payloads. Why increasing ARG_MAX is usually the wrong fix
There is no single command-line limit that applies to all Unix-like systems. POSIX leaves the implementation limit to the platform. Linux documents modern stack-derived behavior and notes a historical 128 KiB argument/environment limit on 4 KiB-page systems before Linux 2.6.23; that historical figure is not a universal capacity for current systems or wkhtmltoimage. Changing a stack resource limit may affect the effective Linux limit, but it does not solve a fragile design that places a whole document or thousands of paths in argv. It may also be unavailable or unsuitable in a container, service manager, or hosted environment. Prefer changing where the payload lives rather than trying to enlarge the limit.
The reviewed Debian manual documents input and output files and file-related options, but not a portable response-file syntax. Do not assume that wkhtmltoimage @args.txt is supported unless the exact build or wrapper you use documents it. wkhtmltoimage manual
Troubleshooting common failures
The shell reports the error, but there is no wkhtmltoimage output
The program may not have started. Look for command substitution, a variable containing a full HTML document, or a large wildcard expansion. Replace the content argument with a file path, or process many paths in bounded iterations.
The command still fails after saving HTML to a file
Check the rest of the invocation and environment. A huge list of options, headers, cookies, or inherited environment variables can still push the combined data over the limit. Run getconf ARG_MAX and env | wc -c as diagnostics, then remove unnecessary arguments or reduce the environment where appropriate.

It works in a terminal but fails in a service or container
The environments and process resource settings may differ. Compare the command, environment size, executable version, and relevant stack limit in both contexts. Do not infer a universal threshold from the successful terminal run; preserve the file-based approach and leave headroom.
Local images or stylesheets are missing
The input file may reference resources that the renderer cannot access under its local-file policy. Check whether the installed build requires --enable-local-file-access or supports a scoped --allow path. Grant only the required directory and test deliberately, especially if input HTML can be untrusted. The Debian manual is for wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6-1; package builds, patched versions, and wrappers can differ. Check wkhtmltoimage --version and the matching documentation.
Batch conversions overwrite images or stop unexpectedly
Duplicate basenames can map different source files to the same output name. Include relative paths or another unique component in output names. The example loop exits when a conversion fails; if you want to continue and collect failures instead, record the failed input and report it after the loop rather than silently treating the batch as complete.
A temporary HTML file exposes private data
Create temporary files in a directory restricted to the current user, avoid predictable shared names, and remove them after rendering. Do not put credentials or private page content into shell arguments, which can also be exposed through process inspection or logs depending on the environment.

Check your installed build before changing the command
Package versions and patched builds differ. Check wkhtmltoimage --version, consult documentation for that build, and test any local-file access changes deliberately. The central repair remains independent of the build: keep large HTML and large input collections out of argv, and pass short file paths to each invocation.

Will moving HTML into a file fix every “Argument list too long” error?
It fixes the oversized-HTML-argument case, but an enormous environment or a separate expansion of arguments can still exceed the execution limit.
Can I use the same output filename for every file in a batch?
Only if overwriting is intentional. Otherwise derive a unique output path for each input, taking care that identical basenames from different directories do not collide.
