Those are different problems with different checks. Work through the matching steps below, starting with the least disruptive.
Identify where the address-bar process stops
Chrome’s address bar—also called the omnibox—handles both website addresses and web searches. You can enter a URL directly, or type search terms and use Chrome’s default search engine. Suggestions are a separate part of that process: they may draw on your browsing history and data from the selected search engine. A missing suggestion does not by itself mean the address bar cannot search or open a website.
Try this quick check: click the address bar, type a short search phrase, and press Enter. Note exactly what happens. If clicking or keyboard focus fails, concentrate on Chrome responding to input. If text appears but suggestions do not, check suggestion and search-provider settings. If Enter submits but no page opens, check whether Chrome is failing to navigate or the page is failing to load.
- Cannot focus or type: the failure occurs before Chrome can process a search or URL.
- Can type, but address bar suggestions are not working: suggestions or their provider may be involved; try submitting a search anyway.
- Can type and see suggestions, but selecting one does nothing: compare selecting it with pressing Enter after typing the same text.
- Can submit a URL or search, but the destination fails: the address bar may be working; investigate a connection, browser-loading, or destination-site problem.
The checks below apply to desktop Chrome. Menu wording and availability can vary by Chrome version, operating system, search provider, and region.

If you can’t search from the address bar
Check the default search engine
When you type search terms rather than a complete website address, Chrome sends the search through its default search engine. If the search provider was changed or is unavailable, a search may behave unexpectedly even though Chrome still accepts text and direct URLs. In Chrome, open Settings and look for the Search engine section. Confirm the intended provider is selected as the default. You do not need a particular provider to enter a website address in the bar.
To distinguish a search problem from an address-entry problem, type a known full URL, such as https://example.com, and press Enter. If that opens while a search phrase does not work, focus on the search engine and suggestion settings rather than treating the bar as unable to accept input.
Check search and suggestion behavior
Chrome’s suggestion behavior can depend on the selected search engine and browsing-history data. Open Settings and review the search-engine and address-bar suggestion options available in your version of Chrome. If suggestions are disabled, enabling them may restore suggestions, but it will not fix every kind of address-bar failure. Search-provider features also vary by provider and region.
Test submission separately: type a phrase and press Enter even if no suggestions appear. If the search works, the problem is limited to suggestions or their display, not the basic ability to search from the address bar. If neither suggestions nor submitted searches work, continue to the extension and browser troubleshooting checks.

If suggestions appear but selecting one or pressing Enter does nothing
Compare the two actions before changing settings. Type a simple search phrase and press Enter; then, if suggestions are available, try selecting one. If Enter works but clicking a suggestion does not, you have isolated the failure to selecting a suggestion rather than search submission. If neither action works, or Chrome stops responding, test whether other Chrome controls and pages respond too.
Open a new tab and try a direct URL. If that works but selecting a suggestion does not, recheck the default search engine and suggestion settings. If Chrome is broadly frozen, close and restart Chrome; if the problem continues, restart the computer. These are general Chrome troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed address-bar-specific repair.
If the address bar will not accept focus or typing
Try both the mouse and keyboard: click the bar, then use Chrome’s keyboard shortcut Ctrl+L on Windows or Linux, or Command+L on macOS, to focus it. If the shortcut works but clicking does not, the issue is not simply that the bar cannot receive keyboard focus. If neither action works, check whether Chrome is responsive elsewhere—for example, whether you can open a new tab or use the menu.
Restart Chrome and try again. If the entire browser is unresponsive, restart the computer. If Chrome works normally except for address-bar input, proceed to the extension test below. If Chrome freezes, crashes, or its Settings page will not open, treat the issue as a wider browser problem rather than assuming a particular address-bar cause.

Test whether an extension is interfering
Google Chrome Help recommends temporarily disabling extensions as part of general troubleshooting. This is a diagnostic test: it can show whether behavior changes when extensions are out of the picture, but it does not identify any particular extension as the cause.
- Open Chrome’s menu and choose Extensions > Manage extensions. Depending on the version, you may also be able to enter
chrome://extensionsin the address bar. - Turn extensions off temporarily, then test the same action that failed: focusing the bar, typing, using a suggestion, submitting a search, or opening a URL.
- If the problem clears, turn extensions back on one at a time. Repeat the test after each change until you can identify whether enabling one coincides with the problem returning.
- If disabling extensions changes nothing, re-enable them and continue to the next relevant check.
Do not assume a named extension is responsible based on an isolated community report. The useful evidence is whether the problem changes on your own computer when extensions are disabled and then re-enabled individually.
If a typed URL does not load, troubleshoot the page load
When Chrome accepts a URL and submits it but the site does not open, distinguish an address-bar input failure from a connection or loading failure. Try more than one site. If only one site fails, the problem may be specific to that destination; if multiple sites fail, check your connection and continue with Chrome’s general loading-error guidance.
- One site fails: check that the address is correct and try another site. A problem limited to one destination does not establish that the address bar is broken.
- Multiple sites fail: check that the computer is connected to the network, then restart Chrome and the computer if you have not already.
- Chrome reports a loading error: Google’s general Chrome troubleshooting guidance includes network connectivity, extensions, firewall or antivirus software, available memory, and problems at the site itself as possible categories. These are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis of your specific failure.
- Another browser also cannot load sites: that points away from a Chrome-only address-bar input issue; check the network or the site.
Testing in another browser can help separate a Chrome problem from a broader loading issue, but it does not tell you exactly what is wrong with Chrome if other browsers work.

Reset Chrome settings only after simpler checks
If the search-provider, extension, and general responsiveness checks have not helped, resetting Chrome settings is a more disruptive next step. Google says the reset restores several settings to their original defaults, including the default search engine, homepage and startup behavior, new-tab page, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Review those effects before proceeding; a reset can change settings beyond the address bar.
To reset, open Chrome’s menu and choose Settings. Go to the section for resetting settings—commonly labelled Reset settings—and select Restore settings to their original defaults, then confirm. Labels and placement can vary with Chrome versions.
Google’s reset guidance says bookmarks and saved passwords are not deleted or changed by this action. It is not a full reset: some settings, including fonts and accessibility settings, remain. A successful reset establishes that restoring settings changed the behavior; it does not prove which setting caused the original problem.

Chrome flags are experimental settings. Do not treat them as a routine address-bar repair or change unrelated flags in search of a fix. If the problem began after you enabled or disabled a flag, enter chrome://flags in Chrome, select Reset all, and relaunch the browser. Test again after relaunching.

Google advises resetting flags when changing one causes problems and points to resetting Chrome settings and updating Chrome if trouble remains. Google also cautions enterprise IT administrators against using flags in production. No particular flag is established as a general fix for an address bar that is not working.
If Chrome Settings will not open or Chrome keeps failing
If Chrome freezes, crashes, or you cannot open Settings, ordinary in-browser checks may not be possible. Restart Chrome and the computer, then see whether Chrome can open Settings. For broader loading failures, testing another browser can help determine whether the issue is limited to Chrome.
Google’s reset guidance recommends uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome if you cannot access its settings in order to perform the reset. Treat reinstalling as an escalation after the simpler checks, not as the first response to missing suggestions. Follow the uninstall and reinstall guidance for your operating system, and do not delete a Chrome profile or local data as a speculative fix.

When to ask for more specific help
If these checks do not resolve the problem, gather the details that distinguish one failure from another: your Chrome version, operating system, whether the bar can be focused and typed into, whether suggestions appear, whether Enter works, and whether one or multiple sites fail to load. Include whether disabling extensions, resetting settings, or resetting flags changed anything. That information helps narrow the next step without assuming an unsupported cause such as a particular extension, flag, or profile problem.
