Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Windows 10 setup crashes with SYSTEM_PTE_MISUSE, stop code 0x000000DA, start by checking the installation stage, firmware, connected hardware, and installer media. Microsoft describes this bug check as a page-table-entry misuse; a driver is often implicated, but the stop code alone does not prove that RAM—or any single component—is defective. If you can boot the existing Windows installation, Microsoft’s TrackPtes setting can help diagnose a driver; it is not a repair by itself.
What SYSTEM_PTE_MISUSE means
A page table entry (PTE) is part of Windows’ virtual-memory mapping system. SYSTEM_PTE_MISUSE is bug check 0x000000DA. Microsoft lists multiple parameter values for different PTE-related violations and says the crash stack trace can identify the responsible driver. That makes a kernel-mode driver a key suspect, but firmware and hardware interactions can also contribute. Microsoft’s bug-check reference is primarily for driver developers; most people troubleshooting Setup do not need to interpret every parameter themselves.
If a blue screen names ntoskrnl.exe, that is not conclusive proof that the Windows kernel is defective. The kernel may detect corruption caused elsewhere, such as by a driver. Likewise, a damaged Windows system file is not the only—or necessarily the likeliest—explanation. SFC and DISM cannot fix a bad BIOS, unstable memory, or a device conflict, and are not useful first steps when the computer crashes while booting installation media.
This stop code is distinct from DRIVER_CORRUPTED_SYSPTES (0xDB), DRIVER_USED_EXCESSIVE_PTES (0xD8), MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (0x1A), and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (0x50). Microsoft’s bug-check code reference distinguishes these codes.

First identify where Setup crashes
The failure stage changes which causes are most plausible. Note whether you are upgrading an existing Windows installation or starting a clean installation from USB, and when the blue screen appears. Photograph it if the computer restarts quickly.
| Failure point | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Before the Windows Setup language screen, shortly after booting the USB | USB media or port, firmware settings, peripherals, RAM, and hardware. Existing Windows drivers are not yet the main focus. |
| During “Getting files ready” or another Setup stage | Installer media and USB port, firmware, memory stability, and storage or other connected hardware. |
| After Setup’s first restart | Firmware and storage, graphics, chipset, or other drivers loaded during the transition to the installed system. |
| During an in-place upgrade, followed by a rollback | The existing driver stack and low-level software, plus firmware and device compatibility. Record any accompanying Setup code, such as 0xC1900101. |
An older Windows Central report associated the stop code with the Windows 10 version 1703 SAFE_OS phase and a boot operation. That is a historical, release-specific example—not evidence that every Windows 10 Setup failure has the same cause. Read the report.
Record the exact stage, stop code, any “What failed” filename, Setup code, PC make and model, BIOS/UEFI version, RAM configuration, graphics card, storage controller, and attached USB devices. Those details help distinguish a repeatable device or firmware issue from a one-off installer problem.
Try low-risk checks before changing firmware or hardware
Disconnect unnecessary devices
Power off the computer, then disconnect external drives, printers, webcams, USB hubs, card readers, controllers, docks, and other nonessential accessories. On a desktop, disconnect extra internal drives or PCIe cards only if you can do so safely. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, installation USB, and intended target drive connected. This reduces the number of devices Setup must initialize.

Recreate the installation USB
Recreate the installer with Microsoft’s Windows 10 installation-media page, rather than relying on an old or modified image. If the crash continues, try another flash drive and a different direct motherboard port. Test USB 2 and USB 3 ports if both are available. Confirm that the Windows edition and architecture suit the license and hardware; a successful download alone does not establish that the USB was written correctly.
Return overclocked settings to defaults
Temporarily disable CPU, memory, and GPU overclocks, including XMP or DOCP memory profiles, and test at the motherboard’s default settings. An unstable profile can cause failures that resemble driver or memory corruption. Change one variable at a time where practical so you can tell which change affects the crash.
Check BIOS/UEFI and OEM compatibility carefully
Load firmware defaults and document the original settings
In BIOS/UEFI setup, choose the manufacturer’s option to load optimized or factory defaults, save, and restart. Confirm that the target drive is detected. Before changing settings, photograph or write down the current values—especially storage mode and boot mode—so you can restore them if necessary.
Do not indiscriminately switch Secure Boot, SATA/AHCI/RAID, Intel RST, AMD RAID, or UEFI/Legacy (CSM) settings. A change can make an existing installation inaccessible, alter how Setup sees the disk, or require a storage-controller driver. If the PC used RAID or an OEM storage mode, confirm the required driver and recovery plan before changing it.

Check for an exact-model firmware update
Visit the support page for the precise PC, motherboard model, and hardware revision. Check for BIOS/UEFI updates, Windows 10 compatibility notes, chipset packages, and storage-controller updates. Do not install firmware meant for a similar-looking model or use an unofficial BIOS. Keep the PC on reliable power, connect a laptop’s AC adapter, and do not interrupt a firmware update; back up important files before firmware work.
There are historical, model-specific reports of firmware compatibility problems: an HP discussion described a Windows 10 rollout issue on some systems that required a patched BIOS, and a Dell discussion reported this stop code while booting a Windows 10 USB installer. These examples make OEM firmware worth checking, but they do not establish a universal cause. HP discussion; Dell discussion.
Test RAM and isolate other hardware
Memory testing is sensible elimination, not proof that the stop code means faulty RAM. A passed test does not rule out intermittent faults, a bad motherboard slot, an unstable memory profile, or power instability.
- Shut down the PC, unplug it, and reseat the RAM if you are comfortable working inside the computer.
- If more than one module is installed, test one at a time in the motherboard’s recommended slot. Consult the motherboard manual for slot guidance.
- Keep XMP/DOCP disabled while testing. Run the computer maker’s pre-boot memory diagnostics or another reputable bootable memory test if Windows cannot start.
- If Windows can boot, run
mdsched.exeto open Windows Memory Diagnostic.
For a desktop, test without a discrete graphics card only if the processor and motherboard provide supported integrated graphics. Otherwise, reseat the card and check its power connections. Remove extra PCIe cards and disconnect secondary drives for an isolation test. On a laptop, use the OEM hardware diagnostics and do not open the machine unless you are comfortable following that model’s service procedure.

Check that the target SSD or hard drive appears in firmware and use the manufacturer’s storage diagnostic if available. Do not run destructive disk commands or erase a drive until you have identified the target correctly and backed up anything you need to keep.
If this is an upgrade, investigate existing drivers and software
An in-place upgrade carries forward the existing Windows environment; a clean USB installation does not use that same installed driver stack. If Windows still boots, save important files, then remove or update unnecessary third-party drivers and low-level utilities before trying again. Prioritize graphics, chipset, storage or RAID, network, USB/dock, antivirus, disk-encryption, backup, and virtualization software. Use downloads from the PC, motherboard, or component maker—not random driver-download sites.
If the upgrade rolls back, record the Setup code and the stage at which it fails. A code such as 0xC1900101 is useful context, but it does not by itself identify which driver is responsible. Update relevant OEM drivers and firmware, then retry only after addressing the likely conflict. A clean install may remove an existing software or driver problem, but it does not repair defective hardware or firmware and can erase data.
Use TrackPtes only when Windows can boot
Microsoft documents TrackPtes as an advanced diagnostic aid for tracing PTE corruption, not as a universal fix. It is useful when the existing Windows installation can boot, the crash can recur, and a crash dump can be collected. It is not a practical first step for a computer that blue-screens while booting the USB installer. Microsoft’s documentation specifies the following registry location and value.

- Open Registry Editor by running
regedit. - Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management. - Create or edit the
TrackPtesvalue as aDWORDand set its data to3. - Restart Windows. If the crash recurs, collect the crash dump and have its stack trace examined for the offending driver.
Registry edits carry risk; back up the registry or create an appropriate recovery point first. After diagnosis, remove the value or restore its previous setting unless a qualified technician has a reason to leave it enabled. Setting TrackPtes does not itself repair the driver or hardware.
Know when to stop repeating Setup
If the same crash persists after you have recreated the USB, tried another drive or port, disconnected unnecessary devices, and returned firmware settings to defaults, repeated reinstalls are unlikely to identify the cause. Test memory and hardware, check the exact-model OEM support page, and compare whether the failure happens only with one storage, graphics, or memory configuration. If Windows boots but crashes intermittently, a dump and driver stack are more useful than repeatedly reinstalling.
Anecdotal user reports have also associated the stop code with GPU drivers, but they do not establish that graphics drivers are a general cause. See the Microsoft Q&A report.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Crash before Setup appears: disconnect devices, recreate the Microsoft installer, test another port, load firmware defaults, and test memory.
- Crash after the first restart: check firmware, storage visibility and mode, graphics, chipset, and OEM drivers.
- Upgrade rolls back: investigate existing third-party drivers and low-level software, and record any Setup error code.
- Crash follows an overclock or memory profile: restore defaults and test again.
- Crash continues with different media and minimal hardware: focus on RAM, motherboard, graphics, storage, and model-specific firmware.
- Windows boots and the crash recurs: use crash dumps; consider Microsoft’s
TrackPtesdiagnostic procedure to help identify a driver.
