First find out whether the stutter is happening only on your device or across the broadcast. If other viewers on different connections also report choppy playback, check the creator’s encoder and stream health; if they do not, start with your playback connection and device. No single setting fixes every cause.
1. Find out whether the problem is local or stream-side
Ask another viewer on a different internet connection to check the same part of the live playlist. If the video stutters only on your device or network, focus on playback conditions. If several viewers on different connections report the same issue, YouTube says there may be a problem with the live-stream encoder. This split helps avoid changing broadcast settings to solve a local playback problem.
2. If you are watching, check the connection and device
Check sustained download speed where you watch
YouTube lists approximately 20 Mbps sustained speed for 4K UHD playback. This is a guideline, not a guaranteed threshold for smooth live video; a speed-test result does not rule out network interruptions, congestion, or competing traffic. Check the connection at the playback device and location, rather than relying only on a result measured elsewhere. See YouTube’s supported-device and system requirements.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTry wired Ethernet and reduce competing activity
YouTube suggests trying a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi, if your device and network equipment support it. This is a test, not a remedy for an encoder fault. Close other browser tabs, browsers, and programs that may be using network bandwidth or device resources. If the connection is shared, pause large downloads or other high-bandwidth activity while testing. A suitable Ethernet cable is optional; its category and length should fit your devices and setup, and Cat 6 is not a specific YouTube requirement.

3. If you control the broadcast, inspect its health before changing settings
Check the encoder and local recording
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review stream health and any warnings. In the encoder, look for error messages and check CPU load; YouTube specifically recommends checking both on the live dashboard. If you record a local archive, inspect the same time segment there. A clean local recording alongside viewer complaints points attention toward the outbound connection or delivery path; stutter already present in the archive suggests a source or encoder problem.
Test outbound connectivity
If the video looks healthy in the encoder but is not reaching viewers reliably, investigate the encoder computer’s upload connection. Check for interruptions and competing uploads, and contact your ISP if the outbound connection is unstable. YouTube recommends testing before the event with representative movement and audio, then monitoring stream health while live. Its streaming tips provide further preparation guidance.

4. Verify the 4K/60 encoder settings
These are incoming live-stream settings, not the viewer’s download-speed requirement. YouTube’s current live encoder settings specify the following for 2160p at 60 fps:
| Encoder codec | 4K/60 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 10–40 Mbps |
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
- Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Use a frame rate of up to 60 fps.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Make sure the available outbound bandwidth can sustain the selected bitrate.
YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Do not substitute these live-ingest figures with YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploaded videos.

5. Check latency only when diagnosing the broadcast
YouTube cautions that “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” Its live settings guidance says the 4K stream option for low-latency optimization is unavailable: 4K streams use normal latency. Latency is selected by the creator, so a viewer cannot correct a stream’s latency mode with a local browser setting. See Manage live stream settings.
Common symptoms and what to check next
- Only your device stutters: Check sustained speed at that device, try Ethernet, reduce competing network activity, and close resource-heavy tabs or programs.
- Several viewers on separate connections stutter at the same time: Check Live Control Room stream health, encoder errors, and CPU load.
- The encoder preview or local archive also stutters: Investigate the source video, encoder workload, and encoder settings.
- The encoder looks healthy but viewers still have trouble: Test the creator’s outbound connection and review stream health over time.
- Problems occur mainly with low-latency settings: Review the creator’s latency mode; YouTube notes that lower latency may increase playback buffering, and 4K uses normal latency.
