If a storefront hero image cuts off a product, logo, or text, first identify whether the crop comes from the platform’s safe area, the banner’s shape, its focal point, or a desktop image reused on mobile. Keep essential content inside the visible area, adjust the section’s crop or focal point, and use a separate mobile composition when one image cannot work at both sizes. The right fix depends on the storefront and theme—there is no universal hero-image dimension.
First, find where the crop is happening
Check the published page at the screen size where the problem appears. Note whether content is cut off at the sides, hidden behind an overlay such as a logo, or clipped because the hero area is too short. Then identify the platform, theme, and exact banner or hero section.
- Amazon Store header: use Store-specific creative guidance. Do not assume requirements for an Amazon ad creative also apply to a Store header; Amazon documents ad formats separately in its eCommerce display creative specifications.
- Shopify theme section: inspect its image ratio, crop, focal point, and responsive options.
- Another platform: check that theme or section’s own safe-area and display guidance before changing the image dimensions.
Compare the original image with the rendered banner. If the source image already cuts off the subject, revise the source composition. If the source is intact and only the storefront clips it, focus on section settings or responsive rendering.

Amazon Store hero images
Amazon Ads’ Stores creative guidelines say the hero has a central safe zone and may be cropped by up to 30% overall—15% from each side. Keep the complete product and any text or logo that is part of the artwork inside that safe zone; do not rely on the outer edges of a desktop design remaining visible on a phone.
An older Amazon Stores Help page gives a minimum hero image size of 3000×600 and says that, on screens narrower than 1500 pixels, up to 16% may be cropped from each side. It also warns that the Store’s brand logo can cover additional image area on the left on small screens. These descriptions do not match exactly, so do not combine their percentages into a single crop formula. Check the live requirements in the Store editor for the specific Store you are building; treat the 3000×600 figure as legacy page guidance, not a universal current requirement.
Other storefronts
Use the theme’s preview and documented safe area, if one is provided. Keep the key product and text away from edges that may be cut or covered by overlays. A safe-area rule for one platform or creative type is not automatically valid for another.
Check the section’s shape and focal point before replacing the image
On Shopify, compare the source image’s aspect ratio with the displayed hero section. Shopify’s image guidance covers cropping, resizing, and setting an image focal point. If the theme offers crop or focal-point controls, use them to keep the subject in view before making a new image.

A fixed-height container using CSS object-fit: cover fills the container by cropping some of the source image when their shapes differ. Shopify explains this behavior in its guidance on preventing image layout shift. If the crop crosses important content, change the container’s aspect ratio or select a better crop rather than expecting the entire source to fit unchanged.
Use a separate mobile crop when the composition needs to change
A wide desktop composition may not suit a narrow or taller mobile hero. If a single crop cannot keep the product and copy visible in both layouts, create a mobile-specific image with a composition designed for that space. Shopify describes this as responsive art direction: its guidance recommends separate mobile and desktop images when appropriate and documents the <picture> element as an implementation pattern.

First check whether the theme already supports separate desktop and mobile images. If it does, use those controls. If it does not, custom code may be appropriate, but Shopify’s guidance for art-directed heroes describes a single <picture> approach. Avoid maintaining duplicate hidden desktop and mobile image markup without considering its rendering and performance effects.
Keep the layout stable and check the final rendering
Reserve the hero’s intended space while its image loads by supplying image dimensions or an aspect ratio. Shopify’s layout-shift guidance covers width and height attributes, CSS aspect-ratio, and inspecting shifts with Chrome DevTools.

After changing the setting or image, preview the result at the desktop and mobile widths relevant to your storefront. Check that the full product is visible, text is neither clipped nor obscured, the hero height suits the design, and loading the image does not visibly move the page content.
