Steam may look slower than your internet plan because the two speeds are often shown in different units: internet plans use bits per second, while Steam may show bytes per second. Once you compare like units, check Steam’s download limit and region, then test whether the slowdown comes from your network, Steam’s content server, or the work of writing and installing the game.
First, compare Steam’s rate with your internet plan correctly
Internet plans are commonly advertised in megabits per second (Mbps). Steam may display a download rate in megabytes per second (MB/s) or kilobytes per second (KB/s). A byte is eight bits, so multiply a Steam rate in bytes per second by eight to compare it with a plan stated in bits per second.
Steam’s support page gives this example: 768 KB/s equals 6144 Kb/s, or 6 megabits per second. That is a unit conversion, not a real-world speed benchmark or a promise that a connection will deliver its advertised rate to Steam. Check the units shown in Steam before deciding the download is underperforming. Steam Support: Slow Downloads and Connection to Content Servers
Also, the speed shown for a local network connection may describe the link between your device and router, not the speed of your internet connection. Steam makes this distinction in its troubleshooting guidance at the same support page.

Check Steam’s download limit and region
Remove an unintended speed limit
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Find Limit Download Speed. Remove an accidental restriction or set the limit you actually intend to use.
- Check whether Steam is displaying or interpreting the configured rate in bytes or bits, so the number you enter matches your intention.
Steam’s instructions for the client rate setting are in Setting Client Rates (Limit Download Speed) in Steam; download and update controls are also described in Managing Steam Downloads & Updates.
Test your local or a nearby download region
Steam selects a content region automatically, but a particular regional server can be slow, overloaded, or affected by hardware problems. In Steam > Settings > Downloads, inspect Download Region. Choose the region where you are or the closest available one. If downloads remain slow, test a few nearby regions one at a time and compare results under similar conditions. A distant region is not automatically better, and there is no universal fastest region for every user.

Compare Steam with your network connection
Run a reputable internet speed test on the same device and connection you use for Steam, ideally when other household traffic is quiet. Compare its result with Steam’s rate after converting units. The speed test and Steam download are different activities, so they will not necessarily show identical numbers; the comparison is useful for identifying whether the slowdown appears specific to Steam or affects the connection more broadly.

- If you use Wi-Fi, test near the router. Where practical, compare with a direct Ethernet connection to see whether wireless conditions are contributing.
- If you use powerline networking, a direct wired comparison can help determine whether that link is involved.
- For a Steam Deck, a wired test may require a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter.
Steam recommends a wired comparison where possible and discusses Wi-Fi and network troubleshooting in Steam Hardware – Network + Wi-Fi Troubleshooting and Troubleshooting Network Connectivity. An Ethernet cable is a diagnostic tool here: it can help test whether Wi-Fi is involved, but it does not improve the internet service itself or guarantee a faster Steam download.
Check whether Steam is limited by installation work
A download can slow or pause while Steam writes, unpacks, or patches files. Steam says installations tend to be CPU- and disk-intensive and that download rates can be throttled to match installation progress. As a result, a slow-looking Steam rate does not always mean the internet connection is the bottleneck.

- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets
- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
While a game downloads or updates, look at Steam’s disk activity and your device’s CPU and storage activity. If the disk remains busy while the network rate drops, Steam may be processing or writing data rather than waiting for more bandwidth. A slow SD-card write can also extend installation. If you have another suitable Steam library drive, comparing the same kind of operation there may help identify whether storage is involved; it does not by itself prove that a drive upgrade is needed.
Steam’s Steam Deck network guidance describes the CPU and disk demands of installation at Steam Hardware – Network + Wi-Fi Troubleshooting, and its installation guidance is at Update & Installation Issues.

Refresh Steam, then investigate outside the client
Restart Steam and clear its download cache
- Exit and restart Steam. If the issue persists, restart the computer as well.
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Select Clear Cache and follow the client prompts. Steam says this flushes locally cached configuration data so the client can acquire it again.
Clearing the cache is a client troubleshooting step, not a way to increase the capacity of your internet service. Steam describes it in Update & Installation Issues.
Check for local software and network interference
If speed tests are also slow, or wired and wireless results differ substantially, investigate the connection path rather than changing Steam settings repeatedly. Background applications may be using bandwidth. Security software or packet filtering, router congestion or channel conditions, and DNS changes can also be relevant. Follow the vendor’s official troubleshooting steps for any security software; do not leave a firewall or antivirus disabled.
If the connection changes noticeably by time of day, compare results at different hours. Steam advises users who suspect ISP shaping to test at other times and discuss the evidence with their ISP. Its support guidance is in Slow Downloads and Connection to Content Servers and Troubleshooting Network Connectivity.

To make a useful diagnosis, change one factor at a time and compare similar downloads or updates. Keep the device, game or update, time window, and other network use as similar as possible. Note Steam’s rate and units, the speed-test result on the same connection, whether wired differs from wireless, whether a nearby region changes the result, and what CPU and disk activity look like during installation. These comparisons can identify the likely bottleneck; they cannot establish a universally best region or guarantee that a particular upgrade will help.
