If Snipping Tool opens on a monitor you disconnected, focus it from the taskbar and press Windows+Shift+Left Arrow or Windows+Shift+Right Arrow until the window returns to a visible display. If it is visible but too small or partly outside the desktop, press Windows+Up Arrow to maximize it. These shortcuts work without needing to see the window first.
Move Snipping Tool back to a visible monitor
- Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it. Leave the app selected on the taskbar so it is the active window.
- Press Windows+Shift+Left Arrow or Windows+Shift+Right Arrow. Windows moves the focused app between monitors. Repeat the same shortcut until Snipping Tool appears on the display in front of you.
- When the window appears, press Windows+Up Arrow to maximize it.
- Close and reopen Snipping Tool to check that Windows now restores it on the correct display.
Microsoft documents Windows key plus Shift plus the left or right arrow as the command to move an app or window from one monitor to another. Microsoft Community guidance applies the same command when an app opens off screen.
Why Snipping Tool opens off screen
Windows stores a window’s position as part of the desktop layout. If you disconnect a second monitor, end a remote-desktop session, change docking stations, or alter display arrangement, the saved position can point to a display that no longer exists. An extra monitor that remains enabled in Windows but is no longer plugged in can have the same effect.
This is a window-placement problem, not necessarily a broken Snipping Tool installation. A stale monitor entry can make the app invisible while the process is still running. That is why the taskbar can show Snipping Tool even though no window is visible.

Fix the monitor layout in Windows Settings
Use this method when the move shortcut does not bring the window back, or when the problem returns after every launch.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display.
- Review the monitor diagram and the displays Windows detects.
- Select a display that is no longer connected, then use the available option to disconnect, disable, or remove that display from the desktop.
- Apply the change, relaunch Snipping Tool from Start, and test its position.
Labels can vary by Windows build and hardware. Do not disable a monitor that is currently in use; select the stale or disconnected entry instead. If you regularly switch between a laptop screen, dock, and remote session, Windows may recreate a different layout each time. In that case, use the move shortcut after connecting the layout you intend to use.
Use Snap when the window is visible but misplaced
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Snap controls for arranging windows. If even a small edge of Snipping Tool is visible, drag its title bar to the left or right edge of the screen and release it when the Snap outline appears. You can also use the Windows Snap keyboard controls to place the active window on a half or quarter of the current display.

After Snipping Tool is snapped, press Windows+Up Arrow if you want it maximized. Snap is useful for a window that is on the correct monitor but partly outside the desktop; the monitor-move shortcut is better when the entire window is on another display.
Check whether Snipping Tool itself is working
The app window and the capture shortcut are separate entry points. Confirm which part is failing:
- Start: Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu to test whether the application launches.
- Windows+Shift+S: Opens the image-capture overlay.
- Windows+Shift+R: Opens the video-capture control.
- Print Screen: Can provide another capture entry point when configured for Snipping Tool.
If Windows+Shift+S works but the editor window is invisible, the app is probably running and only its saved position needs correction. If none of these entry points responds, investigate keyboard settings or another utility intercepting the shortcut.

Troubleshoot shortcut and keyboard conflicts
The window-move shortcut does nothing
- Click Snipping Tool in the taskbar first so it is the focused app.
- Hold the Windows key and Shift, then press only the left or right arrow. Release all keys and repeat in the opposite direction if necessary.
- Disconnect or disable the stale display in Settings > System > Display, then launch the app again.
- Test another Windows shortcut. If Windows key combinations fail generally, the issue is broader than Snipping Tool.
Windows+Shift+S does not open the capture overlay
Microsoft notes that keyboard settings or another application can override the capture shortcut. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review keyboard options that affect shortcut behavior. Then temporarily exit screenshot utilities, keyboard remappers, gaming overlays, clipboard tools, and remote-session software that may claim the same key combination. Test again after each change so you can identify the conflict.
Snipping Tool appears briefly and disappears
First correct the monitor layout and retry. If the app still closes or fails to draw, restart the app or the Windows session. For the installed Windows build, use the built-in app repair or reset controls if they are available. The exact path and labels vary by build, so use the repair option shown for Snipping Tool in your Apps settings rather than applying an unverified registry edit.

Reconnect the displays you normally use, arrange them in Settings > System > Display, and make the intended screen your main working display. End the remote session cleanly before launching Snipping Tool locally. If the window is already running, focus it on the taskbar and use the monitor-move shortcut before changing the dock again.

When to use each recovery path
- Use the keyboard move command when the app is focused but off screen.
- Correct Display settings when a disconnected or remote monitor remains in the layout.
- Use Snap when the window is on the right display but partly positioned outside it.
- Check Accessibility settings and competing utilities when capture shortcuts themselves fail.
- Use app Repair or Reset only after display and shortcut checks do not resolve an actual launch or rendering failure.
