If smart-home devices went offline after a router or Wi-Fi change, first check whether restoring the old network name (SSID), password and compatible security settings brings them back. If you’re keeping the new settings, reconnect each device using instructions for its exact model and app. Check the phone’s connection, device compatibility and signal before resetting anything; a reset can erase settings, and Google warns that a documented camera or doorbell removal/reset flow can erase video history.

First, identify what changed and test the new Wi-Fi

Devices often keep trying the Wi-Fi details saved during setup. A changed password or network name can leave those details outdated; a router replacement or security change can also affect compatibility.

  • Work out whether you changed only the password, renamed the network, replaced the router, changed its security or encryption setting, split or combined Wi-Fi bands, or moved the device.
  • Connect a phone to the intended Wi-Fi and load a web page. Ring recommends using a phone to verify the password and internet access on that same network. If the phone cannot connect or get online, troubleshoot the router, password or internet service before changing device settings. Ring’s setup troubleshooting covers these checks.

Try restoring the old Wi-Fi settings

If you know the former network name and password and can change the router settings, this is often the least disruptive option—especially when several devices were set up on the old network. Set the router’s Wi-Fi name and password back to their previous values, and retain compatible security settings. Google says matching the previous SSID and password is the simplest fix for most Nest products; TP-Link specifies matching the SSID, encryption type and password for Tapo and Kasa devices. This is not guaranteed to work with every device or replacement router. Google Nest’s network-change guidance and TP-Link’s Tapo/Kasa guidance give their respective conditions.

Keeping the new settings? Reconnect each device by model

Use the app that originally set up the device, then follow the maker’s instructions for its precise model. There is no universal smart-home Wi-Fi change process: some devices allow an in-place update, while others require setup again.

Google Nest devices

Google’s general guidance directs users to product-specific steps. The route differs by camera and app: Google says Home-app camera and doorbell Wi-Fi details cannot be updated in that app, so reconnecting may require removing, resetting and setting up the device again. For camera devices using the Nest app, Google says Wi-Fi can generally be updated over Bluetooth. Follow the steps for your device and app rather than applying one camera’s procedure to another.

TP-Link Tapo and Kasa devices

TP-Link says the Tapo/Kasa app does not directly switch a device to a different Wi-Fi network. If you cannot restore the former router settings, follow TP-Link’s model-specific reset and setup instructions. Its support FAQ notes that feature availability can depend on the product and hardware version; check the support page for your exact model.

Other brands

Look up the maker’s Wi-Fi change or reconnect instructions for the exact model and app version. Don’t assume another brand’s reset sequence or that a device can change networks without being set up again.

Check Wi-Fi band and security compatibility when indicated

If a device cannot see the network, or reports that the network is incompatible, the issue may be the router’s band or encryption rather than a mistyped password. Check the device manual or maker support for supported bands and regional Wi-Fi channels.

Ring says some of its devices support only 2.4 GHz. If your router shows separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try the 2.4 GHz network for a model that requires it. Ring also documents WPA3 incompatibility for specified models and gives a WPA2-Personal workaround for those devices; a separate 2.4 GHz WPA2 network is another option where available. This is Ring guidance for the models it lists, not a recommendation to weaken security across your entire network. Check the affected model and follow your router maker’s instructions before changing encryption. Ring’s Wi-Fi compatibility guidance identifies the applicable models.

Check signal, power and setup mode

If the network is compatible but the device cannot find it or complete setup, bring a battery-powered device closer to the router temporarily. Check its battery or power connection and make sure it is in the setup state required by its maker. Ring recommends moving a device closer if the Wi-Fi network does not appear; for a device that remains far from the router with weak signal, an extender or mesh system may improve coverage. Coverage equipment will not correct an old password, SSID or unsupported encryption. Ring’s Wi-Fi guidance discusses range remedies.

Reset only when the maker’s instructions call for it

Do not begin with a factory reset. Try the appropriate reconnect workflow first, and reset only if the maker’s documented process requires it or normal reconnection fails. Before removing or resetting a Google Nest camera or doorbell, save any clips you need: Google warns that video history can be lost through the documented removal/reset flow. For other brands, check what a reset erases before proceeding. Google’s camera and doorbell guidance explains its route.

Contact support with details that narrow down the fault

If the official instructions for your model still fail, give the device maker or router/ISP support the information needed to distinguish a setup issue from a network problem:

  • Device model and router model.
  • What changed: SSID, password, router, security setting, band arrangement or device location.
  • The app and any error message, plus the device’s indicator-light pattern.
  • Whether a phone can join that same Wi-Fi and reach the internet.

For continued Tapo/Kasa support, TP-Link also asks for the device LED status, device MAC address, TP-Link account email and router model. Share account or device identifiers only through the maker’s official support channel. TP-Link’s support FAQ lists the requested details.
