If git commit pauses, first find out which hook Git is actually running. The delay may come from a hook wrapper, a tool invoked by the hook, or one-time pre-commit environment setup—not Git creating the commit. Identify the installed hook, separate setup time from recurring work, and run hooks individually before changing what they check.

Why do Git commits slow down while hooks run?

Git runs the pre-commit hook before it creates a commit. If the hook exits with an error, Git aborts the commit. Git normally looks for hooks in $GIT_DIR/hooks, but the core.hooksPath setting can redirect it to another directory. The hook may also be a wrapper that launches pre-commit or other project commands, so the hook’s actual contents matter. See the Git githooks documentation.

How do you find the hook Git is running?

  1. From the repository, check whether Git has a custom hooks directory:

    git config --show-origin --get core.hooksPath

If the command prints a path, inspect that directory. If it prints nothing, check the repository’s Git directory under hooks; the default is $GIT_DIR/hooks.

    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Open the installed pre-commit hook script and read what it launches. Follow any wrapper scripts or project commands it calls until you can name the tools being run.

  3. Run the commit again only if you need to observe when the delay happens. Git runs the hook from the working-tree root in a non-bare repository, before obtaining the proposed commit message and writing the commit.

A hook path that differs from the one you expected can explain why inspecting a different script did not reveal the slow command.

Is the delay first-run setup or recurring work?

Pre-commit can download and install a hook environment the first time a hook runs; it reuses that environment on later runs. The project’s official pre-commit documentation describes this behavior. If the slowdown occurred on the first run after installing hooks or changing their configuration, setup may account for it. If the same hooks have already run successfully and commits remain slow, investigate the commands they execute and the files they select.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To provision missing environments before your next commit, run either:

pre-commit install --install-hooks

or:

pre-commit install-hooks

There is no universal expected runtime in the documentation, so compare repeated runs in your own repository rather than treating a particular number of seconds as proof of a problem.

How do you identify the slow hook?

Run each configured hook by its ID. The --verbose option shows output even when a hook succeeds:

pre-commit run <hook_id> --verbose

Repeat for the other hook IDs in the repository configuration. This isolates which hook corresponds to the observed delay, but it is not a benchmark or a profiling tool. Once you have a suspect, inspect its executable, arguments, environment, and any project scripts it calls. Profiling the underlying command, if needed, depends on that tool.

Does the hook check too many files?

In normal Git-triggered use, pre-commit runs hooks against staged files. Broader matching rules or commands can expand the work. In particular, pre-commit run --all-files intentionally runs hooks across the repository. Inspect the hook configuration for these settings:

  • files and exclude, which include or omit paths by pattern.
  • types, types_or, and exclude_types, which affect which file types match.
  • always_run, which can invoke a hook even when no files match.

Check whether the selected files are appropriate for each hook. For example, a check intended for a limited set of file types should not match unrelated files. Narrow overly broad patterns or exclusions where that fits the check’s purpose; do not change them just to hide a slow command.

The fail_fast option stops later hooks after a failure. It can avoid running later checks when an earlier one fails, but it does not inherently make a successful full run faster. Pre-commit also supports hook stages, so a check that does not need to run on every commit may be assigned to another supported stage or invoked manually where appropriate.

Could pre-commit be rebuilding its environment?

Pre-commit’s default repository store is ~/.cache/pre-commit. PRE_COMMIT_HOME overrides that location; otherwise, XDG_CACHE_HOME sets the base directory used for the store. Check that the expected location is available and consistent in the environment where commits run—for example, if the hook runs under a different account or execution environment than your interactive shell.

The documented cache locations are not a reason to clear the cache as a routine speed fix. Investigate a specific missing, inaccessible, or unexpectedly different environment before changing it.

When should you skip a hook or move a check to CI?

Skip one hook only for a diagnostic or exception

To test whether an identified hook is responsible, pre-commit lets you skip that hook for one commit:

SKIP=<hook_id> git commit -m "message"

Git also supports git commit --no-verify, which bypasses the pre-commit hook more broadly. Either bypass weakens the local safety net. Use it temporarily to confirm a diagnosis or handle an exceptional commit, then address the hook’s scope or command rather than making bypasses routine.

Choose CI when a check need not block every local commit

Keep quick, high-value checks local when developers benefit from feedback before committing. Consider CI for checks whose cost or scope does not suit every local commit. The trade-offs are when feedback arrives, how much code is checked, whether a check can modify files, and whether it can run offline: local hooks can provide pre-commit feedback on staged files and may run without network access once their environments are available; CI reports after the relevant push or workflow and can check changed files or a broader set. A check that modifies files may need a workflow that handles those changes deliberately.

For changed-file checks in a CI context, pre-commit documents this invocation:

pre-commit run --from-ref <base> --to-ref <head>

Its documentation also describes pre-commit.ci, including pull-request autofixes and periodic hook-configuration updates. Those are workflow capabilities, not a guarantee of faster local commits; using CI changes where checks run rather than ensuring that local hook execution will speed up.
