To troubleshoot an external SSD that loads games slowly or disconnects from a handheld PC, first confirm the drive is still mounted, then test the USB connection path one change at a time. Compare direct connection with a hub or dock, try another port if available, remove other USB devices, and test the SSD on another computer. These checks help narrow the fault to the drive-and-cable path or the handheld setup, but no single result proves a component is defective.

Use the Steam Deck steps below for SteamOS; Windows handheld owners, including ROG Ally users, should follow Windows and device-maker guidance. There is no established universal cause or load-time benchmark for external SSD gaming on handheld PCs.

Before troubleshooting, record your setup

Write down the exact handheld model and operating-system version, SSD and enclosure models, cable, hub or dock, and game launcher. Note whether the issue happens on battery, while charging, or only through a dock. Change one condition at a time so you can tell which comparison affects the result.

Start with a clean baseline

  1. Restart the handheld. Install available OS and device updates. On a Windows handheld, use Windows Update and the manufacturer’s official update or support tools for your specific model.
  2. Temporarily close third-party utilities and overlays. On Steam Deck, Steam’s basic-use and troubleshooting guide recommends exiting or disabling third-party applications while troubleshooting.
  3. Check whether the operating system still sees the SSD. On Steam Deck, open Steam > Settings > Storage. In Windows, check the applicable storage view or File Explorer and confirm the drive is mounted.

If the drive is missing, reconnect it and note any error. Do not format or attempt repairs on a drive containing important data until you have backed it up. Steam’s storage guidance does not provide a universal external-SSD repair procedure.

Isolate the USB connection path

Steam Support lists intermittent disconnections and port-dependent behavior among possible USB scheduling or contention symptoms. Its USB connection and contention troubleshooting recommends comparing ports and connected devices. Run these tests one at a time:

  1. Connect the SSD directly to the handheld instead of through a hub or dock, if your hardware allows it.
  2. Try another port, if one is available.
  3. Unplug other USB devices and retest. If the issue stops, reconnect them individually to see whether the behavior returns.
  4. If you have no alternate port, compare the current setup with a USB-C hub. Treat this as a diagnostic change to the connection path, not a promised speed upgrade or fix.
  5. Test the same SSD, enclosure, and cable on another computer.

If the problem follows the drive to another computer, checking the drive, enclosure, and cable—or backing up the data and contacting the relevant vendor—is a reasonable next step. If it works elsewhere but fails on one handheld or port, investigate that handheld’s port, updates, dock, or support channel. These are diagnostic inferences from the comparisons, not confirmed diagnoses.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

Test a dock and its power separately

If you normally use a dock or hub, compare it with fewer downstream accessories and test with and without the dock’s power connection where that is safe for your setup. Record whether the SSD stays mounted and whether charging changes. On Steam Deck, a dock needs USB-C Power Delivery passthrough to power the Deck. Steam also notes that a dock may reserve part of its power contract for downstream devices, which can sometimes trigger a slow-charge warning. That dock guidance does not establish power delivery as the cause of every SSD disconnection.

Steam says most USB-C-compliant hubs and docks work with the Deck, while Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docks may work but are not officially supported. Check compatibility and power requirements for your particular handheld before relying on a dock.

On Windows, do not disable USB selective suspend as a blanket fix

USB selective suspend allows Windows to suspend an individual USB port while other ports remain active. Microsoft says the setting is enabled by default and strongly recommends not disabling it. The Microsoft Learn USB Selective Suspend documentation, updated May 7, 2025, is primarily written for driver developers; it directs end users with USB-C issues to Windows USB-C troubleshooting. Start with the connection comparisons and your handheld maker’s current instructions rather than changing advanced power settings automatically.

Separate wireless problems from local game loading

On Steam Deck, a USB 3 accessory such as a hard drive can interfere with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios. Steam recommends increasing the distance between high-bandwidth USB 3 accessories and the Deck. For Wi-Fi trouble, try a 5 GHz access point and move away from nearby 2.4 GHz devices. See Steam’s Docking the Steam Deck guidance.

This is a possible radio-interference issue, not evidence that wireless interference explains slow local SSD reads. If Wi-Fi downloads slow down while the SSD is attached, test wireless performance separately from a repeatable local game-load sequence.

Investigate slow loads when the SSD stays connected

Compare the same game and the same repeatable load sequence from internal storage and the external SSD. Keep the game version and other conditions consistent, and note shader compilation, launcher activity, and background downloads that may affect a particular run. Sandisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 2000MB/s Transfer Speeds-New Model
  • NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
  • IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
  • POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

Official support material does not establish comparable external-SSD game-load benchmarks across handheld models, enclosures, file systems, or games. A USB connection specification alone does not guarantee a particular load time or a universal improvement over internal storage.

Use the comparison results to choose your next step

What you observe What to investigate next
Disconnects stop after removing other USB devices or changing the port or hub. USB connection scheduling or contention is a plausible avenue to investigate; the change does not confirm a root cause. Follow Steam’s USB troubleshooting guidance.
The drive also disconnects on another computer. Check the SSD, enclosure, and cable; back up important data and consider contacting the relevant vendor. This is an inference from the cross-device comparison.
The drive works on another computer but fails on one handheld or port. Investigate that handheld’s port, updates, dock, or manufacturer support. This is an inference, not a confirmed hardware diagnosis.
Only Wi-Fi or Bluetooth changes when the drive is nearby, on Steam Deck. Try greater separation from the drive and other USB 3 accessories; for Wi-Fi, compare 5 GHz and reduce proximity to 2.4 GHz devices.
Downloads are slow but local game loads are not. Test the network separately. A download bottleneck alone does not show that SSD reads are slow.

Steam Deck storage alternatives are a separate question

Steam’s troubleshooting guide covers Steam Deck storage management and microSD-card formatting, but its microSD specifications do not establish external SSD performance. ASUS says the ROG Ally supports a UHS-II or backward-compatible microSD card reader and allows games to be installed on a card. That is a supported storage-expansion option, not a repair for an external SSD that disconnects.
