One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf Selenium cannot launch PhantomJS, first find out which layer is failing: the PhantomJS executable or its runtime libraries, GhostDriver’s WebDriver service, the Selenium client’s protocol and capabilities, or the host environment. PhantomJS is a legacy browser-automation path, not a currently documented Selenium browser-driver target. There is no single fix that applies to every launch error; the exception, versions, operating system, and launch configuration determine the next step.
What launches when Selenium starts PhantomJS?
PhantomJS’s WebDriver support is provided by GhostDriver, a Remote WebDriver implementation. The GhostDriver project identifies version 1.2.0 as integrated into PhantomJS 2.1.1. In the documented standalone mode, PhantomJS starts the service with a command of the form phantomjs --webdriver=PORT; a WebDriver client then connects to that service.
This is historical project guidance, not a guarantee that an old PhantomJS binary will work with a current Selenium binding or operating system. Selenium’s current driver guidance names other browser-driver paths, not PhantomJS. Treat PhantomJS launch problems as compatibility diagnosis, and plan to migrate if the automation must remain maintained.
Collect the details that identify the failure
Before changing versions or capabilities, save the complete exception and any PhantomJS/GhostDriver output. Record these details in the same bug report:

#1 Best Overall
- Programming language and Selenium binding version.
- Operating system, architecture, and relevant runtime-library versions.
- PhantomJS version and the exact executable path.
- The full launch command, port, and whether the connection is local or remote.
- Whether the error occurs before a session is created, during navigation, or only when an element is located.
Keep the first error in the log, not just the final stack-trace line: a missing library or a service that exits immediately may be reported by Selenium only as a session-start failure. Selenium’s logging guidance recommends actionable warning-level messages, including deprecation information; enable the binding’s logging when the default output does not reveal the underlying process error.
Check the PhantomJS executable and host runtime
Run the binary outside Selenium
- Locate the exact PhantomJS executable configured in the test and confirm that the file exists.
- On Unix-like systems, confirm it has execute permission and invoke it directly from a terminal. If it exits or prints a loader error without Selenium involved, fix that executable or environment issue first.
- Check the version output and compare it with the version expected by the test. The PhantomJS project’s documented download is version 2.1.1; its download page is old, so availability of those binaries and compatibility with a present-day host should be verified rather than assumed.
The PhantomJS download page documents Linux prerequisites including Fontconfig and the runtime symbols GLIBCXX_3.4.9 and GLIBC_2.7. A Linux binary that exists but cannot load required libraries is not a Selenium capability problem. Check the host’s installed libraries and architecture before changing the Selenium version. Do not copy libraries from another machine blindly; use a compatible runtime or isolate the legacy executable in an environment that supplies its dependencies.
Verify that GhostDriver starts and the client reaches it
For the legacy standalone service, the GhostDriver repository documents this pattern:

phantomjs --webdriver=8910
Here, 8910 is an example port, not a required value. Use a port that is available on the host. Leave the service process running while testing, and configure the remote WebDriver client to connect to the same host and port. A service that exits, listens on a different port, or binds somewhere the client cannot reach will prevent session creation even when PhantomJS itself runs.
Check these conditions in order:
- The command starts the intended PhantomJS executable rather than another copy earlier on the system path.
- The process remains alive after startup and reports no immediate loader, permission, or port error.
- The selected port is not already occupied, and local firewall or container networking rules allow the client to reach it.
- The client’s remote endpoint uses the actual service host and port, not a default Selenium Grid endpoint or a stale URL from another test environment.
The exact endpoint syntax depends on the language binding and the way the test creates its Remote WebDriver client. The available evidence does not establish one universally correct client constructor for every Selenium version. Check the documentation for the binding version actually installed instead of pasting an old constructor into a newer project.
Isolate a PhantomJS issue from a Selenium issue
Run a minimal equivalent test using a browser and driver path named in Selenium’s current documentation. Selenium recommends trying the same operation in multiple browsers to help determine whether a failure is driver-specific. Keep the test small: create a session, open a simple page, and quit. If that succeeds while PhantomJS fails at session startup, focus on the PhantomJS/GhostDriver path, its runtime, and its compatibility with the client. If both fail, inspect the binding setup and general environment before concluding PhantomJS is responsible.
Rank #3
Do not confuse a browser-startup failure with a synchronization failure later in a test. Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance says, “The most common Selenium-related error is a result of poor synchronization.” That guidance matters when a page or element is not ready after the session has started; it does not by itself explain a PhantomJS process that never starts or a WebDriver session that cannot be created.
Review old capabilities and Selenium 4 protocol changes
If the failure began after upgrading Selenium, inspect how the test configures PhantomJS. Selenium 4 uses the W3C WebDriver protocol by default, and malformed or noncompliant capabilities can prevent session creation. Old PhantomJS client code may assume legacy protocol behavior or send capability names and structures that a newer client rejects.
Compare the capability payload produced by the old test with the requirements of the Selenium binding version in use. Remove obsolete or malformed entries and use the binding’s documented capability APIs. Do not assume a protocol mismatch is the cause merely because Selenium was upgraded: first preserve the complete exception and confirm that the executable and service run independently.

Should you use Selenium Manager to repair PhantomJS?
Selenium Manager is included beginning with Selenium 4.6 and is used when a driver is unavailable. It helps with browser-driver paths covered by Selenium’s current guidance; that guidance does not list PhantomJS as a supported browser-driver target. Therefore, Selenium Manager is not an automatic PhantomJS repair. Installing a newer Selenium release may help manage a supported browser’s driver, but it does not establish that PhantomJS/GhostDriver is compatible with that release.
When to migrate away from PhantomJS
For maintained automation, choose a browser and driver path named in current Selenium documentation, then use Selenium Manager where applicable. Before migrating, compare the existing test’s use of legacy capabilities, protocol behavior, rendering assumptions, and environment dependencies. Validate the pages and workflows your test actually covers; the available documentation does not establish that any replacement behaves identically to PhantomJS.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Executable not found or permission denied | Path, installation, or file permissions | Run the configured binary directly and correct the path or permissions. |
| Linux loader or shared-library error | Host runtime and architecture | Check Fontconfig and the documented GLIBC/GLIBCXX requirements against the host. |
| PhantomJS starts, but no WebDriver session is created | GhostDriver service or client endpoint | Confirm the service stays running, the port is free, and the client targets that same host and port. |
| Failure began after Selenium upgrade | Capabilities or protocol assumptions | Inspect the exact capability payload and W3C compliance; do not presume version change alone proves the cause. |
| Session starts but elements are missing or timing out | Page readiness and synchronization | Investigate waits and page behavior separately from the launch path. |
| Equivalent supported-browser test also fails | Binding or broader environment | Reduce the test to session creation and inspect Selenium logs and environment setup. |
What evidence is needed for a definitive fix?
A reliable diagnosis requires the full exception and driver output, the Selenium binding and version, PhantomJS version, operating system and architecture, and the exact local or remote launch configuration. Without those details, a specific fix would be a guess. The most useful first split is whether PhantomJS runs by itself, whether GhostDriver remains available at the endpoint, and whether the same minimal operation works through a currently documented browser-driver path.

Does a Selenium timeout always mean PhantomJS failed to launch?
No. A timeout after a session starts can be a page-load or synchronization problem; a launch failure prevents the session from being created. Identify when the error occurs in the test lifecycle.
Can Selenium Manager install PhantomJS for me?
Selenium’s current driver guidance does not list PhantomJS, so Selenium Manager should not be treated as a PhantomJS installer or compatibility fix.
