If Selenium’s screenshot ends at the bottom of the visible browser area, you are probably capturing the current window rather than the whole document. In Python with Firefox, use Selenium’s documented full-document screenshot method. For other browsers or language bindings, verify that the installed driver provides an equivalent method; a standard window screenshot and a full-page screenshot are not interchangeable.

First check what Selenium is capturing

A page can extend well below the browser viewport. Selenium’s standard screenshot methods capture the current window or browsing context; they are not automatically full-document captures. The Selenium Python Chromium API describes save_screenshot() and get_screenshot_as_file() as saving the current window. A screenshot that stops at the viewport is expected when using those methods for a tall page.

Choose the capture scope that matches the test:

  • Viewport: capture what is currently visible in the browser window.
  • Full document: capture the whole page, including content below the fold.
  • One component: capture a specific element rather than the entire page.

Use Firefox’s full-document method in Selenium Python

The Selenium Python Firefox API documents get_full_page_screenshot_as_file() and save_full_page_screenshot() for full-document screenshots. Use the method documented for your installed Selenium binding and browser; do not assume these Firefox-specific names work with another browser or language.

from selenium import webdriver

driver = webdriver.Firefox()
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("page.png")
finally:
    driver.quit()

The output path is page.png. The documented method is the important change: replacing a regular current-window screenshot with a full-document API addresses the capture-scope mismatch. Selenium’s Python Firefox API documentation is for Selenium 4.50.0 as of the research date.

Capture only the visible window or a single element

Current-window screenshot

If the test is meant to record only the visible browser window, use the ordinary screenshot method. This Chromium example intentionally produces a current-window screenshot, not a guaranteed full-page image.

from selenium import webdriver

driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    driver.save_screenshot("viewport.png")
finally:
    driver.quit()

For the Python Chromium API, save_screenshot() and get_screenshot_as_file() are documented as current-window captures.

Element screenshot

If the test concerns a component such as a table, card, or form, use Selenium’s element screenshot API rather than capturing the page and cropping it afterward. Selenium documents element screenshots separately from browsing-context screenshots. Locate the element using the selector appropriate to your page, then call the screenshot method on that element.

Why maximizing the window usually does not fix a full-page capture

maximize_window() changes the browser window size and can make more content visible at once. Selenium’s documentation does not describe maximizing as converting a current-window screenshot into a full-document screenshot. Use it when the requirement is a larger viewport; use a supported full-document method when the requirement is the entire page.

When the bottom is still missing

If you have selected a documented full-document method and the output still omits content, check the page and capture rather than assuming a particular Selenium defect. The following are diagnostic checks, not confirmed causes for every setup:

  • Confirm the page has rendered. Verify that the missing content exists before taking the screenshot. If the page populates asynchronously, wait for the relevant content using an explicit condition in your test.
  • Check where the missing content lives. It may be inside an element with its own scrolling area rather than the main document. Inspect that element and determine whether the test needs a screenshot of the element or a different page state.
  • Inspect the output dimensions and content. Open the generated image and check whether its dimensions indicate a viewport capture or whether the page content itself was absent at capture time.
  • Verify the browser, driver, and binding support. Confirm the method is documented for the browser and language binding you are using, and record the Selenium, browser, driver, and binding versions if behavior remains inconsistent.

Check driver conformance and report reproducible failures

Selenium’s Java TakesScreenshot API reference distinguishes W3C-conformant screenshot behavior from non-conformant drivers, for which results may be browser-dependent best effort. That is a reason to include environment details in a bug report, not proof that a specific driver caused a particular missing-bottom issue. The cited Java API reference is version 4.28.0.

For a useful reproduction, record:

  • Selenium version and language binding
  • Browser and version
  • Driver and version
  • The exact screenshot method used
  • Whether the missing content belongs to the main document or a nested scrolling element
  • The image dimensions and a small reproducible page or test, if available

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot from a URL without setting up Selenium and a browser driver, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its documented options include full-page capture, element capture by CSS selector, viewport and device presets, and waiting for a selector, delay, or network idle. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does maximize_window() make Selenium take a full-page screenshot?

No. It enlarges the browser window; it is not documented as changing a current-window screenshot into a full-document capture.

Can I use Firefox’s full-page screenshot method with Chrome?

The cited methods are documented by Selenium’s Python Firefox API. Check the API reference for your browser and binding instead of assuming the same method is supported.
