Selenium performs a real pointer-style click at the element’s center after scrolling it into view; finding the link is not proof that this point is clickable. Use an explicit wait for the needed page state, inspect the center point and surrounding layout, and choose a remedy that preserves the interaction your test is meant to verify.
Why Selenium can find an anchor but fail to click it
A locator answers “does a matching node exist?” A WebDriver click asks a different question: “can the browser interact with this element at its current position?” Selenium scrolls an out-of-view target into view and clicks its center. If another element covers that point, WebDriver can report an intercepted click even when the anchor is visible and the locator is correct. Selenium’s interaction documentation explains that an obscured center can cause this error: Selenium element interactions.
The anchor’s own bounds can also be the problem. ChromeDriver documents an edge case where clickable descendants extend beyond the anchor’s bounds, so the apparent target geometry does not match the point ChromeDriver can click. See ChromeDriver clicking issues.
These distinctions matter because a longer sleep, a new locator, and a JavaScript click address different failure modes. Start with the exact exception and the state of the page, then inspect the actual hit target.

Read the exception before changing the test
Record the full exception text, the locator, and the browser state at failure. WebDriver’s error reference distinguishes common failures; each points to a different next step: WebDriver error reference.

Do not treat every click failure as a locator problem. A correct locator can still point to a blocked, moving, detached, or non-interactable target.
Wait for the condition the page actually needs
Modern pages can keep changing after navigation returns control to the test. The browser’s readyState reflects loading of resources declared in the HTML; it does not guarantee that later JavaScript has finished revealing a menu, removing a loading mask, or replacing a link. Selenium recommends synchronizing on a specific condition rather than assuming navigation completion means the application is ready: Selenium waits.
In Python, element_to_be_clickable is a useful first check: it waits for an element to be visible and enabled. It does not establish that an overlay will not cover the center point. If the click remains intercepted, continue with hit-target diagnosis rather than adding more wait time. See the Python expected conditions reference.

Python example: wait, click, then verify the result
This example waits for the link to be visible and enabled, clicks it, and then waits for a URL change. Replace the URL and CSS selector with values from your test. The destination condition is only appropriate when clicking this link should navigate to a different URL.

The imports shown are the required Selenium components for this wait pattern. The ten-second timeout is an example test setting, not a universal timing guarantee.
Do not use a fixed sleep as the general repair. It can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. Also avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits: Selenium warns that doing so can produce unpredictable total wait times. Set an implicit wait to zero when adopting explicit waits as the synchronization strategy, and use explicit conditions for the state the test needs.
Inspect the click point and anchor geometry
When an explicit readiness wait succeeds but the click is intercepted, investigate what occupies the center of the anchor at that moment. Common causes include a cookie or consent banner, a sticky header after scrolling, a modal, a loading mask, or an animation that has not settled. A visible link is not necessarily unobstructed.

- Determine whether a banner or modal should be dismissed by the test before the link is clicked.
- Check the element’s size and bounds, especially if the clickable content is a child extending outside the anchor.
- Confirm whether the link is inside an iframe or a newly rendered component and whether the test is interacting with the current DOM node.
ChromeDriver’s documented options include clicking a child of the supplied element, removing or hiding an obstructing element, using the advanced interactions API to click at an offset from the top-left, or simulating a JavaScript mouse click. These are not interchangeable fixes. Pick the one that matches the failure and the behavior the test is intended to cover.

Choose a remedy that preserves the intended interaction
Wait for readiness when the page is still changing
Use an explicit wait for a meaningful condition: the anchor becomes visible and enabled, a loading indicator disappears, a menu opens, or an application-specific state becomes available. If the element becomes clickable by this condition but the center is still covered, the problem is geometry or an overlay—not simply insufficient waiting.
Dismiss a blocker when the test should control it
If a consent dialog, modal, or other blocker is part of the application flow, interact with it as the user would, then wait for it to disappear before clicking the link. Removing or hiding a blocker directly is appropriate only when the test can legitimately control that page state; otherwise, it can conceal a real usability problem.
Click the actual clickable descendant when its bounds are valid
If the anchor contains a child that is the actual clickable target and ChromeDriver’s anchor-bounds edge case applies, locate and click that child. Confirm the DOM structure first; blindly changing the locator to an arbitrary nested element can click the wrong thing or mask malformed layout.
Use a pointer offset only when the target point is deliberate
The advanced interactions API can click a point offset from an element’s top-left corner. This can avoid an obstructed center if another point inside the target is genuinely safe. Offsets are sensitive to responsive layout, font changes, and viewport size, so use them only when the test controls those conditions and the chosen point remains meaningful.

Reserve JavaScript clicks for a justified script-level test
A JavaScript-triggered click can bypass normal pointer hit testing. That makes it useful as a diagnostic or for a test explicitly concerned with script-level activation, but it does not prove that a user can click the link. Do not silently replace a failed WebDriver click with JavaScript when the test is supposed to validate normal interaction.
Handle moving elements and stale references
An element may move between the time its position is calculated and the click is dispatched. ChromeDriver notes that a target that changes location can produce a not-clickable error; its guidance says, “If the element eventually stops, wait for that to occur.” If the movement is transient, wait for the relevant layout transition or stable application condition and try again. The documentation does not guarantee success when an element never stops moving.
Rerenders can replace the DOM node even if the new node looks identical. A previously stored WebElement then becomes stale. Wait for the update to finish and run the locator again rather than repeatedly clicking the old reference. If the click itself triggers navigation or a rerender, reacquire elements after waiting for the next state.
Verify the outcome after clicking
A click command completing is not proof that the page reached the expected destination or application state. For a link that navigates, wait for a URL change, expected title, destination element, or new window—whichever matches the test. For an in-page anchor handler, assert the expected state change. This separates a failed click from a successful click followed by an incomplete or incorrectly synchronized transition.

For navigation within the same URL, a URL-change wait is insufficient. Wait for a destination element or another application-specific condition instead. If a new tab or window is expected, wait for the window count to change, switch to the new handle, and then verify the destination. Choose a condition that demonstrates the outcome rather than merely waiting a fixed interval.

Does element_to_be_clickable guarantee Selenium can click an anchor?
No. It checks visibility and enabledness, not whether another element covers the center point. If the click is intercepted, inspect the hit target and layout.
Should I replace a failed anchor click with JavaScript?
Only if script-level activation is what the test intends to exercise. A JavaScript click bypasses ordinary pointer hit testing and is not equivalent to a user-like WebDriver click.
