If Selenium clicks the wrong place, first find out what occupied the intended click point at that moment. Selenium’s ordinary element click scrolls an out-of-view element into view, checks whether it can be interacted with, and clicks its center. A fixed header, dialog, moving element, wrong iframe, or stale element reference can make that point differ from the one you expected. Start with element.click(); diagnose the page geometry and browsing context before resorting to JavaScript.
What Selenium’s click does—and what the error means
WebDriver’s normal element click is not simply a command to dispatch a click event anywhere on a page. Selenium brings an out-of-viewport target into view, checks interactability, then attempts a pointer click at the element’s center. If that center is obscured, Selenium can report an ElementClickInterceptedException (often described as “element click intercepted” or “element is not clickable at point”). The exception is evidence about the click point, not necessarily proof that your locator found the wrong element.
The click point can be covered by a sticky header, footer, consent banner, modal, loading overlay, or another painted element. It can also be somewhere different from where you inspected it if the layout changes between measurement and click. A successful call likewise does not prove the intended application action completed: verify the resulting page state, URL, or application signal.
Diagnose the attempted click before changing the locator
- Capture the failure details. Catch the click exception and record the target’s location and size immediately. If the driver error includes the attempted point, record that too. The values are useful only if collected close to the failure; a later inspection may see a changed layout.
- Inspect what is rendered at that point. Look for fixed or sticky chrome, consent banners, dialogs, spinners, transparent overlays, and animation. The visible receiver may be a different node from the element Selenium was asked to click.
- Check the intended clickable node. An anchor may contain a smaller image or button that is the actual clickable child, while the anchor’s center lies outside that child. Inspect the page structure and choose the real interactive node when appropriate.
- Check whether the element moved. Compare its recorded coordinates with the failed point and with a fresh measurement. If a transition or rerender changed the geometry, synchronize on the application’s stable state and reacquire the element.
- Confirm the browsing context. If the target is inside an iframe, the driver must be switched into that frame before locating and clicking it.
- Retry the ordinary click after fixing the cause. It retains WebDriver’s normal scrolling and interactability checks; bypassing those checks can hide the underlying problem.
Python diagnostic example
This example records the element’s WebDriver location and size when a click fails. The exception text may contain the driver’s attempted coordinates and the element reported as receiving the click. Exact message wording varies by browser and driver.
from selenium.common.exceptions import WebDriverException
try:
button.click()
except WebDriverException as exc:
print("Click failed:", repr(exc))
try:
print("Location:", button.location)
print("Size:", button.size)
except WebDriverException as details_exc:
print("Could not read element geometry:", repr(details_exc))
raise
For a fast-moving page, even these values may no longer describe the exact instant of failure. Use them alongside the exception details and a screenshot or browser inspection captured at the relevant state, rather than treating coordinates as a permanent property of the element.

Fix overlays and fixed headers
If another element is receiving the center-point click, handle the blocker as a user would: wait for it to disappear, close it through its normal control, or make the test reach a state where it is absent. For a consent banner, that can mean accepting or rejecting through the page’s UI. Do not hide the problem by repeatedly clicking the covered target; it will remain intercepted.
A fixed header can cover a target after Selenium scrolls it into view. When the application offers no better route, explicitly position the target below the header, then re-check its geometry and click normally. The offset must suit the page and viewport; there is no universal safe pixel value.
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
# Assume `driver` and `button` refer to the active page and target.
driver.execute_script("arguments[0].scrollIntoView({block: 'center'});", button)
WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(lambda d: button.is_displayed() and button.is_enabled())
button.click()
scrollIntoView is a positioning aid, not an overlay fix: a sticky header may still overlap the target. If that happens, use a page-appropriate offset or remove the blocker, then inspect the target’s rectangle again. Avoid hard-coded coordinates as a general solution; responsive layout, browser zoom, and viewport dimensions can change them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWait for layout changes and reacquire replaced elements
Clicks are inherently timing-sensitive when a page is animating or a framework is replacing nodes. A wait for “visible” or “enabled” alone does not guarantee that an element has stopped moving. Synchronize on an application condition where possible—for example, a loading state ending or an animation-complete class appearing. If there is no such signal, a short period of unchanged geometry can be used as a practical stability check, followed by a fresh lookup and normal click.
Wait for a stable rectangle
The following Python helper samples the rendered bounding rectangle until it remains unchanged for several polling intervals. Tune the timeout and number of stable samples for the page under test. It is a fallback synchronization technique, not proof that all asynchronous application work has finished.
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
def wait_for_stable_rect(driver, locator, stable_samples=3):
previous = None
same_count = 0
def stable(d):
nonlocal previous, same_count
element = d.find_element(*locator)
rect = d.execute_script(
"const r = arguments[0].getBoundingClientRect(); "
"return [r.x, r.y, r.width, r.height];",
element,
)
if rect == previous:
same_count += 1
else:
previous = rect
same_count = 0
return element if same_count >= stable_samples else False
return WebDriverWait(driver, 10, poll_frequency=0.2).until(stable)
# Example:
# from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
# locator = (By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button.submit")
# button = wait_for_stable_rect(driver, locator)
# button.click()
If a refresh or rerender replaces the node, an old WebElement points to a detached element and can raise StaleElementReferenceException. Re-find it from its locator after the page transition or rerender, then verify the new element is the intended one. Do not keep retrying a stale reference.

Use Actions scrolling deliberately
Wheel input through Selenium’s Actions API does not automatically scroll its target into view the way ordinary element click does. Explicitly scroll first, or use a documented origin and offset appropriate to the page, then check where the target landed before clicking. This distinction matters when switching from element.click() to wheel actions as a supposed fix.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For example, with Python Selenium’s wheel action, scroll relative to the element and then perform a normal click:
from selenium.webdriver.common.action_chains import ActionChains
# Selenium 4 Python bindings
ActionChains(driver).scroll_to_element(button).perform()
button.click()
If the element still lands under a fixed header, scrolling to it is not sufficient; adjust the position for that page or deal with the overlay. Prefer a controlled, verified position over a guessed sequence of wheel deltas.
Make sure the driver is in the right iframe
Web elements inside an iframe belong to that frame’s browsing context. Locate the iframe from the current context, switch into it, find and click the target there, then restore the parent or default context. A target that seems to be present in DevTools but cannot be found or clicked may be in a frame your WebDriver has not entered.

Choose the fix that matches the failure
| What you observe | Likely cause | Best first fix |
|---|---|---|
| Intercepted error names a different element at the click point | Overlay or adjacent clickable content | Inspect and dismiss or wait for the receiver; verify the intended clickable node. |
| Element is under a sticky header after scrolling | Scroll position places the center behind fixed page chrome | Scroll to a page-specific safe position, re-check geometry, and click normally. |
| Click succeeds intermittently during transitions | Layout is moving or the DOM is being replaced | Wait for application stability, then locate the element again. |
| Target is visible in the page but lookup or click behaves unexpectedly | Wrong frame context | Switch into the containing iframe before locating it. |
| Wheel action runs but target does not move into view | Actions wheel input does not auto-scroll its target into view | Scroll explicitly, then check position before clicking. |
| JavaScript click appears to work but a real click fails | DOM event dispatch bypasses pointer hit testing and user-like interaction | Fix visibility, geometry, frame, or timing rather than masking it. |
Why JavaScript click is usually the wrong first fix
arguments[0].click() invokes the element’s DOM click behavior; it is not equivalent to moving a user-like pointer to the visible center and clicking. It can bypass the exact obstruction or hit-testing condition your test needs to detect. Use it only when the test deliberately requires DOM event dispatch and that difference is acceptable. For ordinary UI automation, keep the normal WebDriver click and repair the target’s geometry, visibility, context, or timing.

Troubleshooting common click failures
ElementClickInterceptedException
Read the exception details and inspect the point it reports. Identify the receiving element; close or wait for the overlay, correct the scroll position, or choose the genuine clickable child. Changing the locator without checking the receiver may only make the test target a different part of the same blocked control.
ElementNotInteractableException
The target may be hidden, disabled, outside an appropriate interaction state, or not the visible control represented by the locator. Wait for the application’s usable state and confirm the element is displayed and enabled. If the page has separate visible and hidden controls, narrow the locator to the visible one.
StaleElementReferenceException
The page refreshed or replaced the DOM node after the element was located. Discard the old WebElement, wait for the new state, and locate the element again using a stable locator.
Click works locally but fails in another viewport
Responsive breakpoints can reposition controls and fixed page chrome. Check the failing viewport’s rendered layout rather than carrying over coordinates from another window size. Prefer locators and state conditions over absolute offsets, and only use an offset after validating it in the relevant viewport.

Click returns without an error, but nothing happens
Wait for and assert the application outcome you expect, such as a changed URL, a confirmation element, or a state transition. A pointer action without an exception is not a substitute for verifying the test’s result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium click the center of an element?
Yes. Selenium’s ordinary element click targets the element’s center after bringing it into view and checking interactability.
Is an intercepted click always caused by a bad locator?
No. The locator can identify the intended element while another painted element covers the center point.
Should I always replace a failed click with JavaScript?
No. Use JavaScript only when DOM event dispatch is intentionally what the test needs; it does not validate a user-like pointer interaction.
