Open your device’s built-in screenshot interface, make a test capture, and then check the location where that platform saves images. This quickly separates a broken keyboard shortcut from a capture problem or a file that was saved somewhere unexpected.
The correct keys, menus, and save locations differ between Windows, macOS, Android, and ChromeOS. Use the section for your device, then work through the symptom-based checks if the first test still fails.
Identify which part is failing
A screenshot problem usually occurs in one of three places: the command never reaches the operating system, the capture interface opens but does not produce an image, or the image exists but was copied or saved somewhere you have not checked.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Use Snipping Tool instead of the shortcut
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch it.
- Select New, then choose rectangle, window, full-screen, or free-form capture.
- After the image opens in Snipping Tool, use Save as to select a folder and filename.
The normal shortcut is Windows+Shift+S. If it does nothing, launching Snipping Tool directly tests the capture system without relying on that key combination. A successful snip may be placed on the clipboard first; it is not necessarily a file until you save it.

Try the alternate Windows keys
- If your keyboard has PrtScn, press Windows+PrtSc for a saved screenshot.
- If there is no PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space as the fallback on supported keyboards.
For the Windows+PrtSc route, check File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. If you used Snipping Tool, check the destination you selected with Save as instead.
Check whether you copied instead of saved
Open Paint or another image editor and press Ctrl+V. If the image appears, capture worked and only the file-saving step was missing. Save the pasted image manually.
Review privacy permissions for another image app
If a third-party editor cannot read or write your image libraries, review Settings > Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Settings > Privacy on Windows 10. Check access for Pictures, Documents, or Videos. A denied library permission can limit that app; it does not by itself prove that Snipping Tool failed.
Mac
Test each built-in capture mode
- Shift-Command-3: capture the full screen.
- Shift-Command-4: drag over a selected area.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot controls, where you can choose a mode and destination.
Apple’s documented default for keyboard-shortcut captures is the desktop. Hold Control while using a shortcut to copy the capture instead, then paste it into an app or save it where you want.
Restore or inspect shortcut assignments
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots. Confirm that the screenshot commands are enabled and that another shortcut has not replaced the one you are pressing.

When only one window fails
Try a full-screen or selected-area capture. Apple notes that some applications, including DVD Player, may not allow window pictures. A failure limited to one app is therefore different from a system-wide screenshot failure; compare another app before changing system settings.
Find a capture that seems to disappear
Check the desktop and the save location selected in the Screenshot controls. A floating thumbnail can be opened, dragged to another app, or dismissed, so its disappearance from the corner of the screen does not mean the capture was deleted.
Android phones and tablets
Use the standard button method
Press Power and Volume Down at the same time. If that does not work, hold the Power button and tap Screenshot in the power menu when that option is available.
Android controls vary by manufacturer, model, and version. Some Pixel instructions require Android 11 or newer. If neither documented method works, use the phone manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model rather than assuming another brand’s button sequence applies.
Locate the saved image
On current Google guidance, open Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Older phones may use a Gallery app with a Screenshots folder. If the image appears there, capture is working even if a notification or thumbnail was missed.

Separate a phone-wide problem from an app problem
Capture the home screen and a different app. If those work but one app does not, test another capture mode and consult that app’s support documentation. Do not assume every failure is caused by protected content; the available platform guidance only establishes that capture behavior can vary by app and device.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
Open Screen Capture from the interface
Use the Screenshot key if your Chromebook has one. Otherwise open Settings > Screen Capture, or open the shelf/time menu and choose Screen capture. The menu route is the fastest way to determine whether the keyboard is the failing part.

Use the documented keyboard alternatives
- Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows on a Chromebook keyboard with a Show windows key.
- With an external keyboard that lacks Show windows, Google documents Ctrl+Shift+F5.
Check Downloads and the selected folder
Chromebook screenshots save to Downloads by default. In the capture tool’s settings, verify whether another folder has been selected before concluding that the file is missing.
A practical diagnostic sequence
- Identify the device. Note the operating system and, for Android, the manufacturer, model, and Android version.
- Use the native capture panel. Launch Snipping Tool, Screenshot controls, the Android power menu, or ChromeOS Screen capture instead of pressing the shortcut again.
- Try the documented alternate keys. Use only the combination for your platform; a key sequence from another operating system will not diagnose this one.
- Determine clipboard versus file output. Paste into an editor, then check the platform’s expected folder.
- Compare apps and modes. Test a full screen, region, and another application if one window fails.
- Escalate device-specific cases. For Android, use the manufacturer’s support site. For work-managed computers or phones, ask the administrator whether a policy controls screen capture.
Fixes for common symptoms
The shortcut does nothing
Use the on-screen tool first. If it works, inspect the shortcut assignment, check whether the keyboard has the required key, and try the documented alternate combination. On an external Chromebook keyboard, use Ctrl+Shift+F5; on Windows hardware without PrtScn, try Fn+Windows+Space.
The screenshot was taken but you cannot find it
Check the correct destination: Windows Pictures/Screenshots for Windows+PrtSc, the desktop for Mac keyboard shortcuts, Downloads on Chromebook, and the Android Screenshots album or folder. Also test the clipboard by pasting into an editor.

Only one application refuses to capture
Try a different capture mode and another application. On Mac, Apple specifically documents that some apps may not permit window pictures. Treat this as an app-specific restriction unless the same failure occurs across the system.

A third-party editor cannot open or save the image
On Windows, review the app’s Pictures, Documents, and Videos library permissions under the relevant Privacy settings. This addresses the editor’s access and is separate from whether the operating system created a capture.
You need an iPhone procedure
The button steps depend on the iPhone model and are not covered by the verified instructions here. Use Apple Support for your model rather than applying an Android or Mac shortcut.
