If screenshots do nothing in Chrome, first identify the device. Chrome on Windows and macOS normally depends on the operating system’s capture tools or a browser extension; ChromeOS has a built-in Screen Capture tool. On a Chromebook, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows (or Ctrl + Shift + F5 on an external keyboard without a Show windows key), choose a capture mode, and check the clipboard and Downloads folder. If every method fails on a managed device, an administrator may have blocked screenshots or screen-video capture; only the administrator can change that policy.
Start with the right capture method for your device
There is no single Chrome screenshot shortcut that works on every platform. Chrome is an application, while screenshot controls are supplied by ChromeOS, Windows, macOS, or an extension.

The steps below separate ChromeOS capture from Windows and macOS troubleshooting so you do not waste time applying a Chromebook shortcut on another operating system.
Use the built-in Screen Capture tool on a Chromebook
Open Screen Capture
- Press the dedicated Screenshot key if your Chromebook keyboard has one.
- If it does not, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines beside it.
- With an external keyboard that has no Show windows key, use Google’s documented fallback: Ctrl + Shift + F5.
- You can also open Settings and choose Screen Capture.
The Screen Capture interface offers three targets: the whole screen, a selected region, or one window. Select the mode before clicking or dragging the area to capture.

If the shortcut appears to do nothing
- Try the on-screen Screen Capture control from Settings rather than the keyboard.
- Verify that you are pressing the Chromebook’s Show windows key, not a browser tab key on an unfamiliar external keyboard.
- Disconnect the external keyboard temporarily and test the built-in keyboard.
- Restart the Chromebook, sign in again, and test a full-screen capture before testing a partial region or window.
- If both the on-screen tool and every shortcut fail, continue to the managed-device policy section below.
Find a screenshot that was successfully captured
A working capture can look like a failure when it is saved somewhere unexpected. Google’s Chromebook behavior is specific: screenshots and recordings are automatically copied to the clipboard, and captures are saved in Downloads unless you selected another folder.
- Immediately after capturing, press Ctrl + V in an image editor, email, document, or chat field that accepts images. This tests the clipboard copy.
- Open the Files app and select Downloads.
- Sort by date and look for the newest image or recording.
- If you changed the Screen Capture destination previously, check that custom folder instead.
If Ctrl + V inserts an image but no file is visible, the capture worked; investigate the destination setting or Files view rather than the shortcut.
Windows and macOS: Chrome does not own the universal shortcut
Windows
On Windows, test the operating system’s screenshot facility first. Capture the entire display, a region, and the active window separately. If the operating-system capture works but a Chrome extension does not, the problem is in the extension, its permissions, or an organization policy—not in the web page you are viewing.
For a browser-only result, install or enable one extension from a source your organization allows, grant only the requested permissions, and test it on a simple public page. An extension may be unable to capture a protected tab, an internal browser page, or content blocked by enterprise rules.

macOS
macOS supplies its own screenshot controls. Test a full-screen and a selected-area capture outside Chrome. If those work, review the extension’s permissions and destination settings. macOS privacy controls can also prevent an application from recording the screen; on a managed Mac, the administrator may control that permission.
Separate a Chrome problem from a page problem
Test a normal public web page and then the page where capture fails. A protected browser page, a login flow, a video protected by content controls, or a page that continually reloads can behave differently from ordinary HTML. If the operating-system capture works on both pages, Chrome itself is not preventing the screenshot; the extension or page restrictions are the likely cause.
Check extension permissions and conflicts
- Open Chrome’s extensions manager and locate the screenshot extension.
- Confirm it is enabled and review its site-access setting. An extension limited to selected sites cannot capture a page outside that list.
- Test in a new tab with other extensions disabled temporarily. Privacy blockers, script managers, and security software can interfere with capture overlays.
- Update Chrome and the extension, then restart Chrome.
- Remove and reinstall the extension only after recording its settings and confirming that your organization permits it.
Chromium identifies Screencastify as a capture extension, but an extension name does not guarantee that it can bypass an administrator’s screenshot or screen-recording policy. Reinstalling an extension cannot override an intentional restriction.
Determine whether an administrator blocked screenshots
Chrome Enterprise policies can control screenshots on ChromeOS regardless of how the request is made: keyboard shortcuts, applications, and extensions that use the Chrome capture API can all be affected. Managed Windows and Mac computers can also use Chrome Enterprise Premium controls to prevent screenshots.

Signs of a policy restriction
- The Chromebook’s Screen Capture tool, keyboard shortcuts, and multiple extensions all fail.
- The same account works on a personal device but not on a work or school device.
- A message says capture is disabled, restricted, or unavailable.
- An extension can open but cannot capture any permitted tab.
Do not attempt to defeat a company or school control. Contact the administrator and provide the device type, Chrome version, exact shortcut or tool used, time of failure, and any message shown. Ask whether the organization’s screenshot policy allows the specific capture you need and whether an approved exception exists.
When screen sharing or recording is the problem
Screenshot capture and live screen sharing are different controls. Chrome Enterprise can deny screen-video capture; when that policy applies, screen-share APIs fail unless the requesting site is allowed by an administrator-defined URL exception.
Diagnose a denied screen-share request
- Identify whether the site is asking to share a tab, window, or entire screen rather than save a still image.
- Try an approved site or account if your organization provides one.
- Record the exact error from the site and the URL requesting capture.
- Send that information to the administrator and ask whether a URL-based exception is configured.
Changing a screenshot shortcut will not repair a denied screen-sharing API. The policy must be changed by an administrator.
Target-specific fixes
Full-screen capture fails
- Use the Chromebook Screen Capture full-screen mode or the operating system’s full-screen tool.
- Test with one monitor disconnected if you use multiple displays.
- Check whether the device is managed and whether all capture methods fail.
Partial-region capture fails
- Choose partial capture before dragging; do not begin the drag on a browser control that can cancel the overlay.
- Try a larger region, then narrow it, to distinguish a selection-overlay problem from a policy block.
- Use full-screen capture as a diagnostic: if full-screen works, the failure is limited to region selection.
Window or tab capture fails
- Switch to the target window before opening the capture tool.
- Test an ordinary tab, not a browser settings page or protected media page.
- For extensions, grant access to the current site and reload the tab.
Capture works but is blank
A blank image points to a page-rendering or protected-content issue rather than a missing shortcut. Wait for the page to finish loading, disable an interfering extension, and test a simple page. If the operating-system tool still produces a blank result, contact your administrator or device support team.

Performance, reliability, and file handling
- Capture after the page has finished rendering; late-loading images may be absent from a fast manual capture.
- For long pages, capture in sections or use a tool designed for full-page output rather than relying on a viewport-only image.
- Keep enough free storage for image and recording files, especially when capturing high-resolution displays.
- Use a consistent destination folder and date-based filenames when screenshots are part of a bug report.
- Preserve the original file before editing or compressing it; editing can remove details support staff need.

Can I change where Chromebook screenshots are saved?
Yes. Captures normally go to Downloads, but the Screen Capture tool lets you choose another destination. The image is also copied to the clipboard.
