Those are different problems with different fixes. Check the platform’s capture method and destination before changing permissions or clearing data.
First identify the device and what went wrong
Screenshot instructions depend on the device and, sometimes, its operating-system version. Before troubleshooting, note the device model and OS version, the shortcut or app used to take the screenshot, and any error message. On Android especially, those details matter because general instructions may not apply across manufacturers and versions.
Classify the symptom before changing settings:
- No capture: no image, preview, thumbnail, or clipboard content appears after you use the capture control.
- Captured, but missing: you saw a preview or editor, but cannot find a file where expected. It may have gone to a different folder or to the clipboard instead of a file.
- Could not save: the capture appeared, but the app reports a write, access, or save error. This points toward the destination or its permissions.
A capture restriction can also look like a save failure: some apps prevent screenshots of their windows. Apple identifies Apple TV as an example on Mac.
Windows 10 and Windows 11: find the capture route and destination
If you used Snipping Tool
A snip appears in the Snipping Tool window. To save it explicitly, select Save as Image, choose a folder and filename, and save. Microsoft also documents automatic saving to the Screenshots folder; Snipping Tool Settings lets you change the default folder or automatic-save behavior. In the editor, Ctrl+S is another save option. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

- Open the snip in Snipping Tool and verify that the image is visible.
- Use Save as Image or press Ctrl+S.
- Read the destination shown in the save dialog. If relying on automatic saving, inspect Snipping Tool Settings for the configured folder and behavior.
- Open that folder in File Explorer and search for the filename if you chose one.
If you pressed Windows logo key + PrtScn
Microsoft documents this route as saving screenshots under Pictures > Screenshots. Open File Explorer and inspect that folder. Do not assume this shortcut uses the same destination as Snipping Tool, whose automatic-save location can be configured. On hardware without a PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative screenshot shortcut. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts.
If you used Print Screen and there is no file
The Print Screen key can copy an image to the clipboard rather than save a file. Paste into an image editor or another app that accepts images to check whether the capture is there, then save it from that app. Clipboard content is not the same as a screenshot file in a folder.
If Windows reports a write or access problem
Check that the selected folder exists and that your account can create a file there. Also check whether the app can access the relevant picture library. Microsoft notes that when an app is denied write access to a library, it may be limited to writing only in a unique folder within that library. Microsoft’s Camera-app troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the save location, creating a missing Camera Roll folder, and checking that folder’s Write permission. Those steps concern the Windows Camera app; they are not a guaranteed Snipping Tool repair. Apply them only if the affected app and destination match that guidance. Mac: inspect Screenshot Options and check for app restrictions
On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot, then select Options to see or change where captures are saved. The desktop is the default destination. Options can also send a capture to the clipboard rather than to a desktop file.
- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Select Options and inspect the selected save destination.
- If the clipboard is selected, paste into an app that accepts images and save from there.
- If only one app window will not capture, consider whether that app blocks screenshots. Apple gives Apple TV as an example of an app that may not allow its window to be captured.

iPhone: look in Photos and match the steps to iOS
Open Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. This is the documented place to find iPhone screenshots, even when you do not see a file in a Files folder.
The immediate post-capture controls depend on iOS version. Apple says iOS 26 displays post-capture tools, including a save control. On iOS 18 and earlier, a temporary thumbnail appears after the screenshot. Follow the workflow for the version actually installed rather than assuming the newer controls are present. Android: gather device-specific details before changing settings
Screenshot saving behavior and troubleshooting can vary by Android version and device manufacturer. There is no authoritative, general procedure established here for fixing every Android “can’t save” error. Advice in a community discussion about storage, cache, folders, or permissions does not establish that those actions are safe or necessary for every device.
Before changing system settings or clearing data, record:
- Device manufacturer and exact model.
- Android version.
- The exact error text, if any.
- Whether a screenshot preview appears, and whether the image is visible in the device’s gallery or file manager.
- Whether other files can be saved by the same app or to the same destination.
Use the device maker’s instructions for that model and Android version. Do not treat clearing system storage or enabling special access permissions as universal fixes; without device-specific guidance, either could be inappropriate.

Troubleshooting: common mistakes and recovery
Searching the wrong folder
Different capture routes can use different destinations. Check the route-specific location first: Snipping Tool’s configured Screenshots folder, Pictures > Screenshots for Windows logo key + PrtScn, or the destination selected in Mac Screenshot Options. On iPhone, use the Screenshots media type in Photos.

Expecting a clipboard capture to create a file
If the image was copied rather than saved, there may be no new file to locate. Paste the capture into an image editor or other compatible app, then save it to a named folder.
Changing permissions before checking the save location
A wrong or changed destination can look like a permission problem. First inspect the app’s selected location and confirm it exists. If the app still reports denied access, check the relevant library or folder permissions using instructions for that app; a Camera Roll fix for Windows Camera should not be presumed to fix Snipping Tool.
Assuming every failed capture is a save error
If there is no preview, editor image, thumbnail, or clipboard content, the screenshot may not have captured at all. Try a different capture route supported by the same platform. If only one app is affected, check for an app-level restriction rather than repeatedly changing the save destination.
Trying generic Android “fixes” without identifying the device
Do not clear system storage, change special permissions, or follow another manufacturer’s steps solely because an Android forum suggested them. Obtain the model, OS version, exact error, and whether other files save successfully, then consult instructions specific to that combination.
