When screen capture fails in Windows 11, first identify which capture path is broken: Snipping Tool handles screenshots and rectangular video snips, while Xbox Game Bar records an app or game. Test the correct shortcut, update the app, repair or reset it, then investigate graphics drivers. If Windows itself is damaged, use the in-place “Fix problems using Windows Update” recovery option before considering Reset this PC.
Identify what is failing
Windows 11 has two built-in capture tools with different jobs. Choosing the wrong shortcut can look like a broken feature.
Snipping Tool for screenshots and video snips
Press Windows+Shift+S to open the screenshot snipping overlay. Select rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture, then use the notification to edit, save, or share. Microsoft states that a captured snip is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window.
For a short rectangular video recording, press Windows+Shift+R. Select the area, start recording, and stop it from the recording toolbar. This is separate from Game Bar recording.

Xbox Game Bar for an app or game
Game Bar is designed for the active application or game rather than an arbitrary desktop region. Open it with Windows+G. Start or stop recording with Windows+Alt+R. Recordings are saved as MP4 files in VideosCaptures; Game Bar screenshots are saved there as PNG files.
If Windows+G does nothing or the capture controls are greyed out, verify that Game Bar is enabled before troubleshooting the recording itself.
Use the correct shortcut and check Game Bar settings
- Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn on the option that allows Xbox Game Bar to open using the controller button or the Windows shortcut (the wording can vary slightly by Windows 11 build).
- Open the target app or game, click its window so it is active, and press Windows+G.
- In the Capture widget, choose the screenshot button or press Windows+Alt+R to record.
- Check Videos > Captures in File Explorer for the resulting MP4 or PNG.
Game Bar may not capture the Windows desktop, File Explorer, or certain protected content. Test with a normal application window such as a browser or text editor. If that works, the original target—not the capture system—is imposing a restriction.
Update Snipping Tool and Game Bar
Both tools are delivered through Microsoft Store. An outdated package can cause shortcuts, recording controls, or saving to fail.

- Open Microsoft Store from Start.
- Select Library.
- Choose Check for updates (or Get updates, depending on the Store version).
- Install updates for Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar, and related Xbox components.
- Restart Windows and test the shortcut again.
Do not rely only on Windows Update for Store applications; the Store library check is the supported route for Store app fixes and feature updates.
Repair or reset the affected app
Windows can repair an app without deleting its data, then reset it if repair fails. These controls are not available for every application.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Snipping Tool or Xbox Game Bar.
- Select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and scroll to Reset.
- Click Repair first and wait for it to finish.
- Test a capture. If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset. Confirm the prompt.
- Restart Windows, then test both the shortcut and the app opened from Start.
Reset can clear an app’s local settings. It does not remove your personal files, but you may need to configure the app again.
Fix shortcuts that do nothing
Win+Shift+S does not open an overlay
- Open Snipping Tool from Start. If it opens, use its New button to determine whether only the shortcut is affected.
- Install Store updates, then use the Repair and Reset sequence.
- Check that another utility has not remapped the Windows key or disabled it through a keyboard-gaming mode.
- Try the On-Screen Keyboard from Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard to rule out a physical-key problem.
Win+Shift+R does not start a video snip
- Update and repair Snipping Tool.
- Open Snipping Tool manually and look for the video-camera mode. If that mode is absent, your installed build or account may not yet expose the feature.
- Close overlays and screen-recording utilities that may intercept the shortcut, then restart Windows.
Win+G or Win+Alt+R does nothing
- Enable Xbox Game Bar under Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.
- Open a supported app or game and make it the active window.
- Repair or reset Xbox Game Bar and update it through Microsoft Store.
- Review Settings > Gaming > Captures for recording options and confirm that the capture folder has free space.
When the capture is black, flickers, or is corrupted
A black image, flashing display, or unstable recording alongside broader display problems points to the graphics driver rather than the capture app.

- Save your work.
- Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. The screen may blink and a short sound may play while Windows resets the graphics driver.
- Test Snipping Tool and Game Bar again.
Microsoft also advises updating, rolling back, or uninstalling the display driver when driver involvement is indicated. In Device Manager > Display adapters, open the adapter’s properties and use the Driver tab. A recently installed driver can be rolled back; an old driver can be updated through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s supported package. If the problem began after installing a utility, check for incompatible overlays, virtual-display software, or other apps that hook into the display.
Check permissions, storage, and the target window
Confirm the save location and free space
Game Bar writes to VideosCaptures by default. A full drive, unavailable redirected folder, or a disconnected external location can make recording appear to fail. Open File Explorer, verify the folder exists, and check free space on the drive that contains your Videos library.
Test without protected or elevated content
Digital-rights-managed video, secure sign-in screens, some administrator prompts, and certain games intentionally block capture. Test an ordinary desktop application. If ordinary windows record correctly, the block is a protection policy rather than a broken installation.
Close competing overlays
Disable other recorders, GPU overlays, remote-desktop sessions, and keyboard remappers temporarily. Run one recorder at a time so it is clear which component owns the capture hook.

Escalate system-wide failures safely
Use “Fix problems using Windows Update” first
If both capture tools fail after updates, app repair, and driver checks—and other Windows components are also unstable—use the in-place recovery reinstall.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update and select Reinstall now (the exact button text can vary).
- Keep the PC connected to power and internet while Windows downloads and reinstalls the current version.
- Restart when prompted and retest capture.
This process reinstalls the same Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings. It is therefore a less disruptive escalation than a full reset.
Use Reset this PC only after backup
Reset this PC can remove installed apps and settings. Back up important files first. The Keep my files option preserves personal files but still removes apps and settings; reinstall software and restore preferences afterward. Choose a full reset only when the in-place recovery option and normal repair steps have not resolved a system-wide fault.

Use Snipping Tool when the selection itself matters. Use Game Bar when an app or game is the subject and you need its audio or microphone controls. Neither tool is guaranteed to capture protected content.
