Fix AI voiceover problems in this order: correct the script, check the selected voice and language, use a pronunciation control supported by that exact model, then adjust delivery and test a short render. A mispronounced word and a robotic-sounding sentence are different problems, so diagnose them separately.
Why does an AI voice mispronounce a word?
Start with the text. ElevenLabs says misspelling is its most common cause of a mispronunciation: the model may read the text as written. Check the word itself, then look for ambiguous abbreviations, unusual capitalization, or a name the voice may not recognize.
Correct spelling is not a guarantee. ElevenLabs also notes that pronunciation can depend on the selected voice and language. The text supplies language cues, while the voice supplies accent cues. A voice with a different language or accent from the intended delivery may therefore say a correctly spelled word unexpectedly.

Test the problem word in a complete sentence as well as by itself. The surrounding words can give the model context that a standalone test lacks. If the word is consistently wrong, move to a voice-specific pronunciation control rather than repeatedly rewriting the whole script.

How to correct a mispronounced word
- Proofread the source text. Correct typos and clarify ambiguous wording first. If the written word must remain unchanged for captions or on-screen text, avoid a phonetic respelling unless you can keep the visible script separate from the spoken version.
- Confirm the voice and language. Choose a voice whose language and accent match the intended delivery, then render the word in its surrounding sentence.
- Check the selected model’s pronunciation features. For a one-off word, use supported phoneme markup if the model accepts it. For recurring names or technical terms, use a pronunciation dictionary or lexicon when available.
- Validate and render a short sample. Follow the provider’s syntax and locale rules exactly. Listen to the target word and the phrase around it before regenerating the full voiceover.
- Keep a project pronunciation list. Record the approved pronunciation for recurring names and specialist vocabulary so you can apply it consistently with a reusable dictionary or lexicon.
Alternative phonetic spellings can be a fallback when the platform offers no suitable pronunciation feature; ElevenLabs documents this approach. It changes the text the model sees, however, so check captions, subtitles, and any on-screen copy for mismatches.
Which pronunciation controls do major TTS services document?
Pronunciation markup is not portable by default. A tag or phonetic alphabet accepted by one provider may be unsupported by another provider, voice, locale, or model. Check the documentation for the exact synthesis model and language before adding markup.

For a single difficult word, inline phonemes may be convenient; for vocabulary that recurs throughout a project, a dictionary or lexicon can reduce repeated fixes. Provider syntax, supported alphabets, and locale matching determine which option will work.

How to make an AI voiceover sound less robotic
If the words are correct but the performance feels stiff, focus on delivery rather than pronunciation. AWS identifies unnatural prosody or pacing as a possible text-to-speech error. Google documents speaking-rate, pitch, and volume settings; Amazon Polly documents SSML controls for pronunciation, volume, pitch, and speech rate.

- Try a more suitable voice if the current voice does not fit the script’s tone or language.
- Adjust speech rate in small increments. Too-fast delivery can sound rushed; too-slow delivery can lose natural rhythm.
- Review sentence breaks and pauses. Punctuation and paragraph structure can affect phrasing, while supported controls may allow more explicit pause adjustments.
- Use pitch or prosody controls sparingly, where the service provides them, and listen for changes in emphasis as well as tone.
- Render a short passage after each change. No universal rate, pitch, or pause setting is established as a fix for every voice or model.
What to do when a fix does not work
- The word remains wrong after correcting spelling: test it in context, then verify the voice, language, and locale. If those fit, consult the selected model’s phoneme or lexicon documentation.
- Markup is ignored or causes an error: confirm that the model accepts that markup, that the alphabet and syntax are supported, and that the locale allows the feature. Google notes that its SSML support is a subset; Microsoft and other providers also impose locale or voice restrictions.
- A dictionary entry works for one voice but not another: check language matching and locale rules. For Microsoft custom lexicons, also check case because entries are case-sensitive.
- The pronunciation is right but the voice still sounds unnatural: stop changing phonemes and adjust voice choice, pacing, pauses, or supported prosody controls instead.
- A phonetic respelling fixes speech but breaks captions: keep spoken and displayed text separate if the editor supports it, or use a pronunciation dictionary that preserves the written word.
In Microsoft Speech, the documentation recommends providing human-readable speech as a fallback. More generally, preserve a readable source script and validate any custom pronunciation data before production so the spoken result can be checked against the intended text.
