Repeated first-frame freezes in a YouTube Live real estate tour loop can come from the source video or encoder, YouTube ingest, the network, or a viewer’s playback setup. Before changing settings or buying equipment, compare the encoder preview and local archive with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and viewer playback. Where the image first freezes helps narrow down what to investigate; YouTube’s published guidance does not identify one specific cause or one-step fix for this exact symptom.
First, identify where the freeze appears
Follow the video through its path: source and loop player, encoder, connection to YouTube, YouTube ingest, then viewer playback. A freeze in the encoder preview or local archive points toward the source or encoder. If those look normal but the Live Control Room preview or viewers freeze, investigate the stream sent to YouTube or playback conditions instead.
Before troubleshooting, note the pattern. Does the freeze happen at the start of every loop, after a similar amount of time, or irregularly? Does audio continue? Does it affect one viewer or multiple people on different devices and networks? These observations help separate possibilities, but none proves a cause on its own.

Check the source and encoder output
- Watch the loop in the encoder preview. Look for the freeze at the point viewers report it, especially at the transition back to the beginning. If it freezes there too, inspect the file, playback or looping software, and how the source is routed into the encoder.
- Inspect the local archive. If the encoder is recording locally, check the growing file around the reported time. A matching freeze in the preview or archive points to the source, player, encoder, or its workload rather than viewer playback alone.
- Review encoder health. Check the encoder’s dashboard for errors, confirm the software is current, and inspect CPU load and the quality of the source being sent. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, CPU load, and a local archive when diagnosing a live stream.
- If local output is healthy, test outbound internet. YouTube recommends testing the connection from the streaming setup when the encoder output looks good. A healthy local recording does not establish that the outgoing stream is reaching YouTube reliably.
Inspect YouTube’s ingest preview and stream health
Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and compare its preview with the encoder preview at the same time. Check the stream-health indicator and read any timestamped errors. The Control Room reflects the stream YouTube is receiving; its errors can point to a stream-side issue such as keyframe, format, or resolution problems.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Test before going live, and make the test resemble the actual tour. Include audio and movement as YouTube recommends; also watch the loop transition itself. That transition check is useful because a static opening image can make it hard to tell whether the video has advanced.
Verify encoder settings before changing them
Check the settings against YouTube’s encoder guidance rather than changing several values at random. These are general recommendations to verify, not a confirmed explanation for a loop’s first-frame freeze.

- Keyframe frequency: YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Infrequent keyframes can cause buffering.
- Rate control: Verify that the encoder is using constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
- GOP: Use a closed GOP if your encoder exposes that setting, consistent with YouTube’s supported configuration guidance.
- Supported configuration: Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and error messages for the stream’s format and resolution rather than assuming a value from another setup applies.
If you make a relevant change, change one setting at a time and repeat the test. That makes it possible to tell whether the change affected the freeze.

If the local archive and Control Room preview look healthy, compare viewer reports. Ask whether the same moment freezes on a different supported device and a different connection, and whether viewers on independent networks see it. A problem limited to one device or network is different evidence from a freeze reproduced by viewers in several places.

Viewer playback can be affected by the device, connection, network congestion, and broadcast delay. YouTube notes that lower broadcast delay leaves the player with less buffer, which can mean more interruptions. For TV playback, YouTube recommends the Default broadcast delay to best minimize interruptions. Choose a lower delay only when interaction needs justify the trade-off; YouTube also says lower latency matters less when you are not interacting with the audience.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you observe | What to inspect next |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview or local archive freezes too | Check the source file, loop player and transition, source routing, encoder health, and CPU load. |
| Local output is smooth, but the Control Room preview freezes | Check stream health, timestamped errors, encoder settings, and outbound connectivity. |
| The Control Room preview looks normal, but one viewer reports a freeze | Compare playback on another device and connection; check for local network congestion. |
| Several viewers on different networks report the same freeze | Compare their reported times with the Control Room and encoder archive, then review stream-health errors and encoder logs. |
| The freeze recurs at every loop restart | Inspect the source and loop transition in the encoder preview and archive. The timing is a useful clue, not proof that the loop player is at fault. |
| Audio continues while video freezes | Record that detail and compare the archive, Control Room preview, and affected viewers; it helps localize the problem but does not identify a cause by itself. |
When to report the problem to YouTube
If the freeze persists after you have compared the local output, Control Room, and viewer playback, report the issue to YouTube. Include the stream time and error timestamps, encoder logs and settings, whether the local archive freezes, and which devices and networks reproduce the problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance directs creators to report continued issues.
