To find the cause, check in order whether screenshots were written to actualDir, whether sync-expected retrieved snapshots, and whether the key-generator and publisher point to the intended baseline. The project documentation describes that workflow but does not define the exact error message, so the failure stage and your logs matter.
First determine whether a reference image should exist
Reg-suit compares current images from the configured actualDir with expected images fetched into its working directory by the configured publisher. On a first run, there may be no earlier snapshot for the selected key. The official Puppeteer demo describes those images as new on the initial run; after they are published, the next run can use them as expected images. Check whether a baseline has actually been published for the relevant key before treating absence as an error. Official Reg-suit Puppeteer demo
Trace the failure through Reg-suit’s workflow
Reg-suit exposes three useful stages: synchronize expected images, compare, and publish. Its run command combines the operations. When diagnosing a missing file, run or inspect the stages separately where possible so you can tell whether the problem occurred before comparison or during publication. Reg-suit README
- Capture: verify the screenshot step completed and wrote the expected filenames into
actualDir. - Synchronize: inspect
sync-expectedoutput and publisher logs to see whether the prior snapshots were retrieved. - Compare: confirm Reg-suit has current images and expected images to compare; review the generated HTML report for actual differences.
- Publish: if establishing a baseline, publish it only through the project’s intended review process. Confirm the selected storage location and key before relying on that baseline in later runs.
Check screenshot output and actualDir
The core.actualDir setting is required. It must point to the directory containing the images to test. Confirm that screenshot generation ran successfully, that the expected files exist there, and that the path resolves as intended from the project or CI working directory. A screenshot saved elsewhere—or a capture step that failed before writing files—cannot serve as the current side of the comparison.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The README also documents workingDir, which is optional and defaults to .reg. Check that the expected images are being synchronized into the working directory your run uses, particularly if the project overrides that setting. Configuration and command details
Verify the publisher and snapshot location
Expected snapshots are retrieved through the installed publisher plugin. Reg-suit documents S3 and GCS publisher plugins for retrieving previous snapshots and publishing current snapshots and reports. Make sure the configured plugin, storage bucket, credentials, and snapshot location correspond to the baseline you intend to use. A successful capture does not establish that synchronization found the matching stored images. Official Reg-suit repository

- If synchronization reports no usable prior snapshots, check publisher configuration and whether a baseline exists for this run’s key.
- If credentials or storage access fail, resolve the access problem in the publisher configuration before changing comparison thresholds.
- If local runs find a baseline but CI does not, compare the key selected in each environment and the publisher’s retrieval path.
Check which snapshot key Reg-suit selected
The installed key-generator plugin determines which expected snapshot Reg-suit looks for. A baseline can exist in storage yet remain unavailable if the current run selects a different key.
Git-hash plugin in CI
The README warns that a detached HEAD environment can prevent the Git-hash plugin from identifying the base commit. Its GitHub Actions example recommends fetching full Git history with fetch-depth: 0 and attaching the branch in CI. Adapt the steps to your own CI provider and branch rules; do not assume that the GitHub Actions syntax applies unchanged elsewhere. README’s CI guidance

Local-versus-CI mismatch
- Compare the key reported or implied by each environment.
- Check whether CI has the required commit history and branch context.
- Confirm the publisher is retrieving snapshots for that same key and storage location.
Do not change visual-difference thresholds to fix a missing file
Reg-suit’s configuration includes thresholdRate, thresholdPixel, enableAntialias, ximgdiff, and concurrency, alongside actualDir and workingDir. The threshold settings control tolerated visual differences; they do not make an absent expected image appear. Leave comparison settings alone until synchronization has produced the intended expected image and you are reviewing a genuine visual difference. Publisher settings are plugin-specific under the plugins configuration object. Reg-suit configuration reference
Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No expected image on an initial run | Baseline may not exist yet | Check whether a baseline was published for the selected key; the demo treats initial images as new. |
| Current screenshots are absent | Capture output or actualDir |
Verify the capture step’s result, filenames, and configured path from the run’s working directory. |
| Expected images are not fetched | sync-expected or publisher configuration |
Inspect synchronization logs, plugin selection, credentials, and storage location. |
| Works locally but not in CI | Key selection or CI Git context | Check the key-generator plugin, detached HEAD behavior, available history, and branch attachment. |
| Images are present but comparison fails | Actual visual differences or report review | Inspect the HTML report; only consider comparison thresholds if the issue is a tolerated pixel difference, not a missing file. |
Or skip the browser setup

FAQ
Does the error text prove that Reg-suit is broken?
No. The official documentation describes the workflow but does not document the exact error string, so the message alone cannot identify the cause. Use the failing stage, logs, key, and configuration to narrow it down.
Should I publish the current images just to clear the error?
Only when the images are the intended baseline and have passed your project’s normal review. Publishing without review can turn an unintended visual change into the expected result.
