A screenshot call can encode an empty or not-yet-painted target perfectly well; changing PNG, JPEG, or viewport options will not make that target load. The dependable order is to enable the Page domain, navigate, wait for a load signal, verify the URL and DOM, then capture and decode the returned base64 data.
Why chrome-remote-interface produces a blank screenshot
A blank image is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The capture may have happened while the page was still loading, while client-side application code had not rendered content, or on a different Chrome target from the one that navigated. The most useful first question is therefore not “Which screenshot format should I use?” but “What URL and DOM did this CDP target have at the instant of capture?”
Two reports illustrate the symptom without proving a single universal cause. A 2017 issue describes a headless Canary run on Mac producing an 81-byte PNG, with the reporter seeing similar results on other websites. A separate ChromeDevTools MCP issue opened January 25, 2026 describes navigation followed by about:blank, an empty body, and a 16KB blank screenshot. These are observations from different tools and environments—not evidence that every blank screenshot is a library defect or that every site is blocking automation.
Start with target selection, navigation completion, and DOM state. Only after those are sound should you investigate capture geometry or encoding.

Use a known-good capture sequence
The project’s basic example enables Page, navigates, waits for Page.loadEventFired, calls Page.captureScreenshot, and writes the returned base64 image as a PNG. The following Node.js example keeps that order and adds checks that fail loudly instead of silently saving a likely blank file.
const CDP = require('chrome-remote-interface');
const fs = require('fs');
async function main() {
const client = await CDP();
const { Page, Runtime } = client;
try {
await Page.enable();
await Runtime.enable();
// Subscribe before navigating so a fast load event is not missed.
const loadFinished = Page.loadEventFired();
const navigation = await Page.navigate({ url: 'https://example.com' });
if (navigation.errorText) {
throw new Error(`Navigation failed: ${navigation.errorText}`);
}
await loadFinished;
const check = await Runtime.evaluate({
expression: `JSON.stringify({
url: location.href,
readyState: document.readyState,
bodyLength: document.body ? document.body.innerHTML.length : 0
})`,
returnByValue: true
});
if (check.exceptionDetails) {
throw new Error('Could not inspect the page after navigation.');
}
const page = JSON.parse(check.result.value);
console.log('Page state:', page);
if (page.url === 'about:blank' || page.bodyLength === 0) {
throw new Error('The attached target is still blank or has no body content.');
}
const { data } = await Page.captureScreenshot({ format: 'png' });
fs.writeFileSync('screenshot.png', Buffer.from(data, 'base64'));
console.log('Saved screenshot.png');
} finally {
await client.close();
}
}
main().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Run it in a Node project where chrome-remote-interface is installed and Chrome is exposing a remote debugging endpoint that the package can reach. If Chrome is not started with remote debugging, or the endpoint points to another browser instance, the client cannot capture the intended page. Keep the Chrome launch configuration, target, package version, and headless mode stable while diagnosing so that a rerun is comparable.
What the checks tell you
location.hrefshould be the destination URL, notabout:blank. If it is blank, investigate attachment and navigation before touching screenshot settings.document.readyStatereports document loading state. A completed load event is useful, but it does not guarantee that a client-rendered app has finished drawing its content.bodyLengthis a quick diagnostic, not proof that the page looks correct. A page can have a nonempty body containing only a placeholder, error message, or hidden content.Page.captureScreenshotreturnsdataas a base64-encoded image string. Convert it withBuffer.from(data, 'base64'); writing the encoded text directly to a file does not produce a valid PNG.
Verify the CDP target and rendered page
Chrome’s remote debugging connection can expose more than one target. A client attached to a blank tab can still receive valid protocol responses and return a valid image file—of the wrong page. Inspect the attached target immediately before navigation and again before capture, especially if your program creates tabs, reconnects, or runs multiple captures concurrently.

- Confirm the browser connection. Verify that the CDP client is connecting to the Chrome process and debugging port you intended, rather than a different local or shared browser instance.
- Check the target around navigation. Record which page target is attached before issuing
Page.navigate. Recheck after the load wait. If the target changes or remains on a blank tab, correct the attachment flow first. - Log browser state through Runtime. Evaluate
location.href,document.readyState, and body length on the same client immediately before capture. This distinguishes an empty page from a screenshot-format problem. - Allow application rendering when needed. A load event marks document loading progress, not necessarily completion of every app-specific render or asynchronous request. If the page’s content appears after load, wait for a meaningful selector or application condition before taking the screenshot.
- Use a direct Chrome capture as a control. If possible, compare with a direct headless Chrome screenshot under the same browser version and launch conditions. A successful direct capture but blank CDP result helps narrow the issue to connection, target, or sequencing.
If the browser reports the right URL but the body stays empty, inspect the page’s own navigation and rendering behavior. Do not assume anti-bot protection from a blank output alone. Record the Chrome version, headless setting, launch flags, target ID, and chrome-remote-interface version; the reported incidents show why environment details matter, but neither incident establishes a general failure rate.
Capture a full page rather than the viewport
A page that is visible at the top but missing lower content is a geometry problem, not the same symptom as a target stuck on about:blank. The project’s full-page approach measures the rendered body, sets the emulated device metrics and visible size, and then captures. Keep width, device scale factor, and height explicit so the resulting dimensions are reproducible.
- Enable the
DOM,Emulation,Network, andPagedomains. - Navigate and wait for load, then wait for any application content needed for the capture.
- Use the DOM box model to measure the body’s rendered height. Check that the result is positive and plausible before using it.
- Call
Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverridewith the intended viewport width, measured height, and device scale factor. - Call
Emulation.setVisibleSizewith the matching visible dimensions, then callPage.captureScreenshot.
Very tall pages may be expensive to render or produce large image files; use a defined clip or a smaller viewport when the requirement is only a section. Lazy-loaded images can also appear only after scrolling or another page-specific trigger. A full-page capture setting does not guarantee that every lazy resource has been fetched and painted.

Choose capture options only after the page is valid
The CDP Page domain defines Page.captureScreenshot as “Capture page screenshot.” Its options govern the captured area and image encoding; they do not fix a missing target or an unrendered document.
| Option | What it changes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
format |
Image encoding: png, jpeg, or webp. |
Use PNG for lossless debugging; choose JPEG with a quality value for photographic output where smaller files matter, or WebP when the consumer supports it. |
quality |
JPEG quality setting. | Set it when choosing JPEG; it is not a page-rendering control. |
clip |
Restricts capture to a specified rectangle. | Use for a region capture after confirming the page is visible and the rectangle is correct. |
captureBeyondViewport |
Controls capture beyond the viewport. | Use when capturing content outside the visible area, with appropriate page dimensions and emulation settings. |
fromSurface |
Controls the screenshot surface source; the protocol default is true. |
Compare only when diagnosing a capture-source issue on a valid, rendered target. |
optimizeForSpeed |
Requests an encoding optimization for speed. | Consider only after correctness is established; it does not cause navigation or rendering. |
For an initial failure investigation, avoid changing several options at once. Keep the capture a plain PNG of the viewport, establish that the target and DOM are correct, then test one geometry or encoding variable at a time.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The browser stays on about:blank
- Likely direction: target attachment, navigation race, or CDP connection state.
- Check: attached target identity, navigation result, and
location.hrefimmediately before capture. - Fix: attach to the intended page and ensure navigation completes on that same target. Do not tune image options while it remains blank.
The screenshot is tiny or blank, but the file exists
- Likely direction: the output reflects an empty or nearly empty page, or the data was mishandled.
- Check: body length and URL before capture; confirm the returned base64
datawas decoded before writing it. - Fix: repair the page state or decoding step. An incident’s 81-byte or 16KB output is not a threshold that diagnoses other captures.
The top is correct but the bottom is missing
- Likely direction: viewport capture or incomplete full-page geometry.
- Check: measured body height, viewport width, device scale factor, visible size, and whether lower-page content is lazy-loaded.
- Fix: configure emulation and visible size before capture; trigger required lazy content before measuring if necessary.
The page URL is right, but its content is still missing
- Likely direction: the document navigated but app-rendered content is not ready, or page-level loading failed.
- Check: ready state, body contents, and the selector or condition that indicates the particular app is ready.
- Fix: wait for that condition rather than assuming the load event means all application work has finished.

Keep captures diagnosable in production
A production screenshot pipeline should treat navigation and capture as separate stages with observable checks between them. Log the requested URL, attached target, navigation result, final URL, ready state, body length, capture options, output format, and any error. Keep sensitive page content and credentials out of logs. When a capture is rejected as blank, preserve the diagnostic state so a retry can distinguish a transient rendering delay from a persistent target-selection problem.
Set explicit limits for how long your own job will wait for navigation and app readiness, and fail with a useful error when a limit is reached. A longer wait can help a slow page but does not repair a disconnected browser or wrong target. Likewise, retry only when the failure is plausibly transient; repeating a capture on an unchanged about:blank target wastes time and produces no new evidence.

FAQ
Does a successful PNG write mean the page loaded?
No. It means image data was written; the file may faithfully represent a blank or incomplete target. Verify the URL and page state before treating the image as a successful capture.
Which environment details should I include in a bug report?
Include Chrome version, headless mode, launch flags, target ID, chrome-remote-interface version, and the URL and DOM checks observed at capture time. Also say whether a direct Chrome screenshot works under comparable conditions.
