If Puppeteer reports cannot start document portal: cannot get the current user: getent could not be executed, first identify the browser executable it launched and check that executable’s environment. The message has been reported with Snap-packaged Chromium, but the available evidence does not establish one confirmed cause or a universal fix. It is a browser-startup problem—not, by itself, evidence that your page or document caused the failure.
What the document-portal and getent error tells you
Puppeteer must start a browser process before it can open a page. If that process exits during launch, page code and navigation have not yet become the right place to look. Record the complete error, including the first concrete process error and any preceding lines; later messages can be consequences of the first failure.
The exact document-portal wording has been reported in a 2025 Ubuntu community discussion involving Chromium installed as a Snap. The discussion mentions a possible Snapd regression and a claimed upgrade outcome, but that account is anecdotal rather than an authoritative confirmation or a generally applicable remedy. Read the Ubuntu community report, then check current guidance for your Ubuntu, Snapd, Chromium, and Puppeteer versions before changing packages.
getent is a system utility used to query account and other name-service information. In this error, the relevant question is whether the browser launch path can execute it—not whether Puppeteer can find a page element. A shell being able to run a command does not, on its own, prove that a separately launched browser sees the same executable path or environment.

Collect the details that distinguish this failure from other launch errors
Before changing anything, capture the following in the same host or container and under the same user and service context that runs Puppeteer. This makes the first diagnosis reproducible and helps avoid applying a fix for a different failure.
- The full Puppeteer error and the first browser-process error printed before it exits.
- The Puppeteer launch options, especially the selected
executablePathand whetherheadlessis disabled. - The actual browser executable path and whether it belongs to a Snap installation.
- The host or container operating system, the user running the process, and the installed Puppeteer, Chromium, and Snapd versions where applicable.
- Whether
getentresolves in the process environment used to launch Chromium.
For a quick shell-level check, try command -v getent and getent passwd "$(id -un)" as the same user that starts the application. These checks can show whether the utility is found and whether the current user lookup returns a result in that shell. They do not prove that the Snap browser process has the same environment, and they are not a substitute for reviewing the complete launch log. If Puppeteer is run by a service manager or inside a container, run diagnostics in that context rather than relying on an interactive login shell.
Follow the first concrete error, not just the final launch message

Check whether Puppeteer is starting Snap Chromium
Puppeteer may use a browser it manages or one you specify. Do not assume the browser from the error text alone: inspect your launch configuration and determine the executable path that the process actually starts. If your configuration sets executablePath, verify that value. If it does not, inspect the launch output and installed browser setup to establish which binary was selected.
- Confirm the executable. Record its full path and how Chromium was installed. If the path invokes a Snap launcher, treat the Snap launch path as a lead, not proof that Snapd is defective.
- Check the execution context. Run the
getentchecks under the same user and service/container context as Puppeteer. Compare relevant environment settings, especially the command search path, without assuming an interactive shell and a service have identical settings. - Record versions. Note the installed Puppeteer, Chromium, Snapd, and operating-system versions. Version details matter because an issue report describes one environment, not every current release.
- Consult current project and distribution guidance. Compare your setup with the Puppeteer troubleshooting page and current Ubuntu/Snap release guidance for your installed versions.
- Change one thing at a time. If you update or switch a browser installation based on applicable current guidance, rerun the same minimal launch and retain the before-and-after error output. Avoid copying an upgrade command from an unverified community report as a blanket fix.
The available report does not establish a specific missing package, Snap configuration change, or Puppeteer code change that resolves every instance. If the same exact error remains after confirming the executable and environment, preserve the full logs and versions for a focused issue report rather than guessing at unrelated page settings.
Handle shared-library and display failures separately
When a library is named
A message such as error while loading shared libraries: libatk-1.0.so.0 points to a runtime dependency problem rather than the document-portal/getent path. A Puppeteer issue documents that library name as an example, but it does not provide a current universal installation recipe for every distribution or browser version. See the reported missing-library issue. Use your distribution’s current package information and the exact browser build to identify the appropriate dependency. Installing an unrelated package or changing Snapd will not necessarily address a named missing library.

When the process needs a display
Missing X server or $DISPLAY indicates a different condition: the browser is trying to start with a graphical display unavailable to it. A Puppeteer issue illustrates this in Docker with headful launch settings; it is an example report, not a guarantee that every Docker display failure has the same remedy. Review the Docker display issue. For automated capture that does not need a visible window, verify that your launch configuration uses headless mode. If you explicitly need headful behavior, configure an available display for the process and confirm that the process can access it.
Do not confuse PDF navigation with a browser launch failure
A browser launch error occurs while starting the process. A PDF navigation error occurs later, after startup, when code navigates to a document. Puppeteer’s current Page.goto() API remarks state: “Headless shell mode doesn’t support navigation to a PDF document.” That limitation describes navigation in headless shell; it does not show that a PDF caused a document-portal or process-launch failure. Check the exact phase and wording before changing your launch configuration. See the Page.goto() API remarks.

To separate startup from page navigation, try a minimal launch in the same environment as the failing application. This CommonJS example reports launch failures without adding page behavior to the test. It assumes Puppeteer is already installed in the project; it does not prescribe a browser installation or package list.

For projects that intentionally configure a custom browser binary, test the same executablePath setting in this minimal case; otherwise you may be testing a different executable from the one that fails in production.

Common diagnostic mistakes
- Changing page code first: page scripts run after launch. Use the first process error to determine whether Puppeteer reached page creation or navigation.
- Assuming every “failed to launch” error is the same: the named missing library, unavailable display, and Snap document-portal/getent message point to distinct layers.
- Changing several packages at once: that obscures which change affected the result. Record versions and isolate changes.
- Using an anecdotal upgrade as a general fix: the community report’s possible Snapd regression is not an official, universally confirmed resolution.
- Treating a PDF limitation as a startup diagnosis: establish whether the browser launched before investigating navigation behavior.
FAQ
Does this error prove that getent is missing from the operating system?
No. It reports that getent could not be executed along the reported launch path. The utility may be absent, unresolved in that process’s environment, or affected by another part of the launch context; check the executable path and execution context before concluding why.
Should I reinstall Puppeteer to fix the document-portal message?
Not as a first step. First establish which browser Puppeteer starts and capture the complete process error. The reported wording points toward the browser packaging and host environment, while the available evidence does not identify reinstalling Puppeteer as a confirmed fix.
