A Puppeteer TimeoutError after 30 seconds means the specific operation you awaited did not reach its completion condition before its timeout expired. The 30,000-millisecond value is the documented default for WaitForOptions, not proof that the website is broken. Find the exact call in the stack trace, then choose a per-call timeout, a page-wide default, a navigation default, or a more accurate wait condition. Increasing a limit is useful only when the operation genuinely needs more time; it cannot make a selector appear or a navigation happen.

What the 30-second error actually means

Puppeteer’s official TimeoutError documentation describes it as an error emitted when certain operations are terminated because they exceeded a timeout. Examples include page.waitForSelector() and puppeteer.launch(). The message alone does not identify the missing condition.

The same symptom can therefore come from very different code:

  • page.goto() or page.waitForNavigation() did not reach its selected lifecycle event.
  • page.waitForSelector() never found a matching element, or the element did not become visible or otherwise usable.
  • A response, request, function, or other wait predicate never became true.
  • puppeteer.launch() could not complete in the allotted time because of an executable, sandbox, environment, or resource problem.

Read the stack trace and the awaited expression before changing any setting. The operation named there determines which timeout control applies.

Choose the right timeout scope

One operation: set a per-call timeout

Use a per-call value when one known-slow operation needs extra time and the rest of the page should fail quickly. Puppeteer timeout values are milliseconds.

await page.waitForSelector('.report-ready', {
  timeout: 60_000
});

await page.goto('https://example.com/slow-page', {
  waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
  timeout: 90_000
});

A per-call setting is the least invasive fix. It documents why that particular wait is allowed to run longer and avoids slowing unrelated checks.

General waits: set the page default

page.setDefaultTimeout(milliseconds) changes the default used by general page waits. Set it once after creating the page when several selector or interaction waits share a known budget.

const page = await browser.newPage();
page.setDefaultTimeout(60_000);

await page.waitForSelector('.dashboard');
await page.click('button.export');

This does not automatically make every kind of operation appropriate for 60 seconds. A broad default can make genuine failures take longer to surface, so keep it close to the code that needs it when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Navigation operations: set the navigation default

page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(milliseconds) applies to the documented navigation calls: goBack(), goForward(), goto(), reload(), setContent(), and waitForNavigation().

const page = await browser.newPage();
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(90_000);

await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.reload();

Use this setter instead of changing the general page timeout when only navigation is slow.

Disable a timeout only deliberately

The documented timeout option accepts 0 to disable the timeout. An unbounded wait can be valid for a controlled internal page, but it can also leave a worker, request, or test hanging forever. Prefer a finite limit plus cancellation or job-level supervision in services.

await page.waitForSelector('.never-time-critical', { timeout: 0 });

Fix the wait condition, not just the number

Navigation lifecycle

WaitForOptions documents waitUntil, with load as the default. A page that keeps connections open, renders through client-side JavaScript, or loads content after the initial document may not reach the state your script needs at the same moment as the load event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick the earliest condition that represents your task, then wait for the application state you actually consume:

await page.goto('https://example.com/app', {
  waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
  timeout: 60_000
});

await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="results"]', {
  timeout: 60_000
});

If the result is produced asynchronously, a specific selector or state marker is usually more meaningful than waiting for the entire network to become idle. Confirm that the selector is correct for the current page, frame, and authenticated state.

Selectors and frames

A selector wait that always times out is often a predicate problem. Check spelling, whether the element is inside an iframe, whether a shadow root is involved, and whether a consent or login step prevents the target from rendering. Capture the URL and a small diagnostic artifact at the failure point:

try {
  await page.waitForSelector('.report-ready', { timeout: 30_000 });
} catch (error) {
  console.error('URL at timeout:', page.url());
  console.error('Title:', await page.title());
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'timeout-state.png', fullPage: true });
  throw error;
}

For an iframe, obtain the frame and wait within it rather than on the top-level page:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
const frame = page.frames().find(f => f.url().includes('/embedded-report'));
if (!frame) throw new Error('Report frame was not found');
await frame.waitForSelector('.report-ready', { timeout: 60_000 });

Click followed by navigation: avoid the race

Puppeteer’s Page API warns that resolving a click and a separate waitForNavigation() promise can create a race. Start both operations together so navigation cannot begin and finish before the wait is attached.

const [navigation] = await Promise.all([
  page.waitForNavigation({
    waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
    timeout: 60_000
  }),
  page.click('a.next-page')
]);

If the click updates the page without navigation, do not wait for navigation. Wait for the resulting selector, URL change, or application event instead.

A diagnostic procedure that avoids guesswork

  1. Identify the exact awaited method. Record whether the failure is launch, navigation, selector, response/request, or another wait.
  2. Write down the expected condition. Examples are “the document reaches domcontentloaded,” “.ready appears,” or “a click changes the URL.”
  3. Reproduce with diagnostics. Log page.url(), title, console errors, failed requests, and a screenshot or HTML snapshot at the failure point.
  4. Verify the target state. Check redirects, authentication, bot checks, an iframe, a changed selector, a JavaScript exception, and whether the page is still loading.
  5. Set the narrowest suitable timeout. Use a per-call value for one slow action, setDefaultTimeout() for general waits, and setDefaultNavigationTimeout() for navigation methods.
  6. Choose a semantic wait. Use a lifecycle event only when it represents completion for your task; otherwise wait for a selector or application state.
  7. Test failure behavior. Ensure your job has an outer deadline, closes the page and browser, and reports the operation that failed.

Common causes and targeted fixes

Symptom Likely cause Action
goto() times out Slow server, redirect chain, or unsuitable lifecycle event Inspect final URL and requests; choose an appropriate waitUntil; raise the navigation timeout only if the delay is expected.
waitForSelector() times out Wrong selector, iframe, hidden element, login, or never-rendered state Check the DOM and frame, then wait for the actual state marker.
Timeout after a click Navigation wait was attached too late, or the click is not a navigation Use coordinated Promise.all for navigation, or wait for the post-click selector/state.
Every operation is slow after raising defaults Page-wide timeout hides unrelated failures Restore a smaller default and use targeted per-call or navigation values.
launch() times out Browser executable, sandbox, permissions, or host-resource issue Inspect launch logs and environment; changing page wait defaults does not repair a launch problem.

Reliability and performance practices

Use layered deadlines

Give each browser operation a finite timeout and enforce a separate job or HTTP-request deadline around the whole task. This prevents one unbounded wait from consuming a worker indefinitely.

Reuse the browser carefully

Launching a browser for every URL adds startup cost and creates more opportunities for launch failures. Reuse a browser process where isolation requirements permit, create a fresh page or context per task, and always close pages in a finally block.

Do not confuse timeout with throughput

A larger timeout does not make a page load faster. It increases the amount of time your worker is willing to wait. For bulk jobs, bound concurrency, record elapsed time, and retry only failures that are plausibly transient. Repeating a permanently wrong selector simply multiplies the delay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 30 seconds a Chromium network limit?

No. In this context it is Puppeteer’s documented default timeout for the relevant wait option. The operation and its completion condition determine why the error occurred.

Should I set every Puppeteer timeout to zero?

Usually not. Zero disables the individual wait timeout and can leave a task hanging indefinitely. Use it only when an outer supervisor makes an unbounded wait safe.

Why does a timeout happen even though the page is visible in a browser?

Automation may receive a redirect, login page, iframe, bot check, or different DOM state. Inspect the automated page’s URL, frame list, DOM, console errors, and screenshot rather than assuming the human-visible page is identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a longer timeout fix a flaky click?

Only if the click’s expected result is genuinely slow. If navigation and click waits are coordinated incorrectly, or the click does not navigate, change the wait pattern instead of merely increasing the number.
