To stop animation-related Puppeteer screenshots from changing between test runs, first make the page’s state repeatable. Emulate prefers-reduced-motion if the app honors it; for irrelevant CSS motion, inject a test-only stylesheet. For JavaScript-driven animation, wait for an application-specific stable-state signal. Puppeteer does not document Playwright’s animations: 'disabled' screenshot option, and network-idle waiting is not an animation-stopping mechanism.
First confirm that animation is causing the difference
Before changing a screenshot baseline, capture the page more than once under the same test setup and inspect the differing pixels. Check whether they overlap a transition, loading indicator, animated cursor, moving component, or hover effect. A difference elsewhere may instead come from changing data, fonts, viewport size, focus, or another uncontrolled page condition.
Keep the test’s viewport, device scale, test data, locale, focus state, and time-dependent content consistent where they affect the output. If the pointer is over a hover-sensitive control unintentionally, move it away before capture; Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance describes this technique for avoiding unwanted hover effects: Playwright visual comparisons.

Try reduced-motion emulation when the application supports it
Puppeteer can emulate the prefers-reduced-motion media feature. This tells the page that the user prefers reduced motion; it does not force every animation to stop. The site’s CSS or application code must respond to the preference. Puppeteer documents the method and a reduce example in its Page.emulateMediaFeatures API. That documentation is under the /next/ path, so check the signature and availability for the Puppeteer version installed in your project.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Set the preference before navigating or triggering the page state whose screenshot you will test:
await page.emulateMediaFeatures([
{ name: 'prefers-reduced-motion', value: 'reduce' },
]);
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Trigger or await the application state required by this test.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
Confirm that the application actually changes its behavior under this preference. If it ignores reduced motion, use a CSS override for CSS motion or synchronize with the app for JavaScript motion.

Disable irrelevant CSS motion with test-only styles
For CSS transitions or animations that cause unwanted pixel variation, inject a stylesheet before capturing. Puppeteer’s page.evaluate() runs a function in the page context; the stylesheet approach below is a test recommendation using that capability, not a built-in Puppeteer screenshot option.
await page.evaluate(() => {
const style = document.createElement('style');
style.textContent = `
*, *::before, *::after {
animation-duration: 0s !important;
animation-delay: 0s !important;
transition-duration: 0s !important;
transition-delay: 0s !important;
}
`;
document.head.appendChild(style);
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
This broad rule can change an intended visual state. Prefer limiting selectors to the unstable component if the rest of the page needs its normal rendering. Setting durations to zero may expose an initial or final state depending on the application’s CSS and timing. It will not, by itself, guarantee that a stateful JavaScript animation has settled.

A complete Puppeteer example
This CommonJS example uses the documented page-capture method. Replace the URL and, if possible, scope the CSS rule to the component that is actually unstable. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation followed by screenshot capture; the available screenshot options are documented separately in the screenshots guide, Page.screenshot API, and ScreenshotOptions API.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 800, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.emulateMediaFeatures([
{ name: 'prefers-reduced-motion', value: 'reduce' },
]);
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.evaluate(() => {
const style = document.createElement('style');
style.textContent = `
*, *::before, *::after {
animation-duration: 0s !important;
animation-delay: 0s !important;
transition-duration: 0s !important;
transition-delay: 0s !important;
}
`;
document.head.appendChild(style);
});
// Replace this with the app-specific state or readiness check for the test.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The example controls viewport and reduced-motion preference, then neutralizes CSS motion before capture. The comment is important: a generic script cannot know which application state or JavaScript animation frame your test intends to capture. Add that project-specific synchronization before the screenshot.

Synchronize JavaScript-driven animations with the application
When the changing pixels come from requestAnimationFrame, a timer, canvas rendering, or an animation library, a CSS override may have no effect. Identify how the application signals that the desired state is ready, then wait for that signal or provide a deterministic test mode that selects the target state. The correct signal is project-specific; page.evaluate() can inspect page state, but it cannot supply a universal completion condition.
- Prefer an app-defined ready flag, event, or stable state that corresponds to the frame you want to capture.
- If the test can set the animation’s state directly, use a fixed state rather than capturing whichever frame happens to be current.
- Avoid using an arbitrary fixed sleep as the default. It can make tests slower and still capture a different frame if timing varies.
Do not mistake network idle for visual stability
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' and page.waitForNetworkIdle() can help when the page needs network activity to settle. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with networkidle2, and its Page.waitForNetworkIdle API describes waiting for network inactivity for at least the configured idle time. Neither documents a guarantee that CSS or JavaScript animations have finished. Treat network quiet as a loading condition, then handle visual motion separately.

Choose the control that matches the source of motion
| Approach | Best for | Controls | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduced-motion emulation | An application that honors reduced-motion preferences | The media feature observed by page CSS or application logic | Does not stop code that ignores the preference. Puppeteer API |
| Test-injected stylesheet | CSS transitions or animations causing irrelevant pixel changes | Selected CSS properties in the page or component | Can alter the intended state and does not ensure JavaScript animation has settled. Puppeteer API |
| Application readiness hook or test mode | Stateful or JavaScript-driven animation | An application-defined target state or frame | Requires an application-specific implementation. |
| Network-idle waiting | Network-dependent page loading | A period of network inactivity | Not an animation control. Puppeteer API |
| Playwright screenshot assertion option | Tests using Playwright | Playwright’s documented animation handling | animations: 'disabled' belongs to Playwright’s API, not Puppeteer’s documented screenshot options. Playwright PageAssertions |
Playwright documents distinct behavior for finite and infinite animations when its screenshot-assertion animation option is used. That does not make the option portable to Puppeteer. See the Playwright API for that framework’s details.
Troubleshoot remaining screenshot differences
- The same region still changes after the CSS override: check whether motion is produced by JavaScript, canvas, or a timer; wait for or set the application’s target state instead.
- The reduced-motion setting has no visible effect: verify the page honors
prefers-reduced-motion. Emulation sets the preference; it does not rewrite application behavior. - The screenshot captures the wrong animation state: do not assume zero duration selects the desired endpoint. Use an app-specific state hook or a narrowly targeted test override.
- Differences move to another area or appear unrelated to motion: compare viewport, device scale, test data, font and asset readiness, focus, pointer position, locale, and time-dependent content.
- The page looks loaded but still differs: network idle only addresses network inactivity, not animation completion. Add the relevant visual-state check.
- Your code rejects an animation screenshot option: check which browser automation library the test uses. Puppeteer’s documented ScreenshotOptions do not list Playwright’s
animations: 'disabled'option.
