First identify where the test fails: Chrome may not launch, navigation or screenshot capture may fail, or a successful capture may differ from its expected image. Those are different problems and need different fixes. The reviewed Puppeteer documentation does not identify an India-specific failure mode; investigate locale, fonts, timezone, or network access only if your logs or a reproducible test point to them.
Before changing flags or updating screenshot baselines, save the full error and record the Puppeteer and browser versions, Ubuntu release and architecture, Node.js version, install command, launch options, runtime user, writable paths, and whether the test runs in Docker or CI.

Identify which stage is failing
Separate a browser startup failure from a visual comparison failure. A test that exits during puppeteer.launch() has a different cause from one that launches Chrome and produces an image that differs from the baseline.
- Launch failure: inspect browser installation, shared libraries, sandbox policy, and writable profile or cache directories.
- Navigation or capture failure: inspect the page load, waits, target URL access, and screenshot options.
- Image mismatch: standardize browser version, viewport, page state, assets, and fonts before touching the baseline.
Capture the full stack trace and exact test command. Also note node --version, the installed Puppeteer version, Ubuntu version and CPU architecture, the user running the test, and whether the build and runtime stages share browser files. Puppeteer’s system-requirements page, version 25.12.0 as displayed on October 3, 2026, lists Node.js 22.12 or newer and Chrome for Testing support on Debian/Ubuntu x64 and arm64. Check the requirements for your installed release before upgrading an established project: Puppeteer system requirements.

If Chrome does not launch
Confirm the expected browser is installed and reachable
Puppeteer normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser. Since Puppeteer v21.6.0, its install process also downloads chrome-headless-shell; the default browser cache location has been $HOME/.cache/puppeteer since v19.0.0. An install step that skipped package lifecycle scripts can leave the browser missing. See Puppeteer installation guidance.
Check that the user who installs dependencies and the user that runs the test can access the same browser cache. This often differs between a CI build stage and a runtime container. Puppeteer documents installing browsers with:
npx puppeteer browsers install
If your deployment uses a custom browser cache or explicit browser location, configure it consistently in the environment that executes the tests rather than assuming a developer machine’s cache exists on the server.

If Chrome exists but exits immediately, inspect its linked libraries. Puppeteer recommends checking the actual Chrome binary with ldd chrome | grep not. Missing dependencies on Debian or Ubuntu commonly involve certificates, fontconfig, GBM, GTK, NSS, Pango, and X11 libraries. The required package names can vary with Ubuntu and browser revisions; use Puppeteer’s current troubleshooting guidance and its link to Chromium’s Debian dependency list rather than blindly copying an old package-install command: Puppeteer troubleshooting.
Puppeteer’s browser installer also exposes an installDeps option for Chrome on Debian or Ubuntu. It runs apt-get and therefore requires system privileges; use it only if that fits how your server is provisioned. Details: InstallOptions interface.
Investigate sandbox errors without disabling the sandbox by default
If the error says No usable sandbox!, check the host’s sandbox policy and browser location. Puppeteer documents an Ubuntu 23.10-and-later AppArmor issue in which policy can prevent Puppeteer-downloaded Chrome for Testing from using user namespaces. Follow the host-specific guidance linked from Puppeteer’s Chrome Linux Sandbox troubleshooting section.
Puppeteer warns: “Running without a sandbox is strongly discouraged.” Avoid making --no-sandbox the routine fix, particularly for a runner that visits untrusted or public web pages. Diagnose the host restriction and preserve Chrome’s sandbox where possible.
Check writable profile and cache paths
Chrome writes profile, configuration, and cache files during startup. Read-only containers, restricted mounts, or directories owned by another user can prevent the browser from connecting. Give the runtime user suitable writable directories, or set Puppeteer’s userDataDir to an explicit writable path. Puppeteer discusses this in its troubleshooting guide.
If Chrome launches but the screenshot test fails
Keep browser versions paired
Puppeteer releases are tightly bundled with specific browser releases to preserve protocol compatibility. Use the same Puppeteer/browser combination when generating baselines and running CI; do not substitute an arbitrary system Chrome without confirming compatibility. Puppeteer’s FAQ explains the pairing.
Make capture dimensions and options deterministic
Puppeteer’s headless screen defaults to 800 by 600 unless configured otherwise. Set the same viewport and device emulation for baseline generation and CI, and use the same capture mode: full page or clipped, with the same image type and related options. The screenshot API includes fullPage, clip, captureBeyondViewport, omitBackground, type, and quality. See screen configuration, Page.screenshot(), and the ScreenshotOptions interface.
For example, make the viewport explicit and wait for a page-specific readiness condition before capturing:
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-test="ready"]');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
Replace the example URL and selector with the application and a reliable readiness signal. Network idle alone may not mean a client-rendered page, image, or font is ready.
Standardize fonts and page state
Missing or different fonts can change glyphs, line breaks, and element heights. Install the same font files in both environments and verify that the site’s actual CSS font stack and character sets are available. Puppeteer’s Linux dependency guidance includes fonts-liberation, and notes that some character sets may need additional fonts; its example is not an India-specific prescription. Do not install language fonts based only on server geography.
Also ensure the same page content, data, animation state, cookies, and assets are present at capture time. If images or application data load asynchronously, wait for a selector or other application-specific condition before taking the screenshot.

- Preserve the failure: save the complete error, command, browser logs, and any image produced. Record versions, Ubuntu release, architecture, runtime user, and container/CI details.
- Locate the failing stage: determine whether the process exits at launch, navigation, capture, or image comparison.
- Apply the matching check: verify browser/cache access, libraries, sandbox policy, or writable paths for launch errors; normalize capture conditions for image mismatches.
- Change one condition at a time: rerun one failing test and compare its output before running the broader suite.
- Update baselines only after investigation: first rule out environment differences and unintended application changes.
This makes the result actionable: a changed baseline should reflect an intentional rendering change, not a server environment drift.
How India may matter—and when it does not
The reviewed Puppeteer documentation does not establish that hosting a server in India itself causes screenshot tests to fail. Geography is relevant only when a specific dependency makes it so—for example, the application serves different content by locale, the test uses a timezone-sensitive page, a font differs, or the server cannot reach a required asset. Confirm such a cause from logs or a repeatable comparison; do not apply a region-specific workaround without evidence.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a URL without maintaining Chrome on the Ubuntu server, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the server being in India cause Puppeteer screenshot failures?
The reviewed Puppeteer documentation does not identify an India-specific failure mode. Treat location as relevant only when logs or repeatable results point to a locale, font, timezone, or network dependency.
Should I use –no-sandbox to fix Chrome launch errors?
Not as a default. Puppeteer says running without Chrome’s sandbox is strongly discouraged; investigate the host sandbox policy and browser configuration first.
