The error libgobject-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory means the Linux dynamic loader cannot find a runtime library required by the Chrome process that Puppeteer starts. Fix it in the environment where Chrome actually runs: identify Puppeteer’s browser executable, use ldd to list every unresolved library, install the matching package for your distribution, then rebuild the Docker or CI image if applicable. This is an operating-system dependency problem, not a Puppeteer API bug.
What the error means
Puppeteer controls a browser; it does not provide Linux’s shared-library loader. On Linux, Chrome (including Chrome for Testing downloaded by Puppeteer) loads libraries such as GLib at startup. If the loader cannot resolve libgobject-2.0.so.0, Chrome exits before Puppeteer can create a page, often producing a secondary message such as “Puppeteer failed to launch Chrome.”
The filename identifies the ABI library, not necessarily the package name. On Debian-family systems, the library is commonly supplied by libglib2.0-0. Package names differ across distributions and releases, so diagnose the target runtime instead of copying a command blindly.
1. Find the browser Puppeteer is launching
The repair must target the exact executable selected at runtime. A normal puppeteer installation downloads Chrome for Testing into a cache under $HOME/.cache/puppeteer; configuration can change that location. A system Chrome, a custom executablePath, and Puppeteer’s cached browser may all have different paths and dependencies.

Inspect your Puppeteer configuration
- Check your launch code for
executablePathor achanneloption. - Check environment and Puppeteer configuration for a custom cache directory.
- In a container, run the commands inside the same image and user context that starts Chrome.
To locate likely cached binaries, list the cache directory:
find "$HOME/.cache/puppeteer" -type f ( -name chrome -o -name chrome-headless-shell ) -perm -111 2>/dev/null
If your application uses a system browser, obtain its path with the distribution’s package tools or the path configured in your code. Do not run ldd against an unrelated browser and assume it represents the one Puppeteer starts.
2. Use ldd to identify missing libraries
Once you have the executable, inspect its dynamic dependencies:
ldd /path/to/chrome | grep 'not found'
Replace /path/to/chrome with the real executable, quoting the path if it contains spaces. Every line ending in not found is a dependency that must be resolved. You may see several missing libraries, not just libgobject-2.0.so.0; install all of them before retesting.

ls -l /path/to/chrome
file /path/to/chrome
/path/to/chrome --version
The direct version command can reveal a different loader error, a missing executable permission, or an incompatible architecture.
3. Install the package for your Linux distribution
Debian and Ubuntu
Refresh package metadata and install the package that commonly provides the GLib object library:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-0
That package is a common example, not a universal solution. Install packages corresponding to every library reported by ldd, and confirm availability in the exact Debian or Ubuntu release used by your machine or image. Puppeteer’s Linux dependency guidance includes additional Chrome runtime packages; missing dependencies such as font, X11, NSS, audio, or accessibility libraries may appear after the first repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFedora, RHEL, CentOS, and other distributions
Use the native package manager and search for the SONAME rather than applying an apt command to an unrelated base image. For example, query your repositories for libgobject-2.0.so.0 or the GLib runtime package, then install the package your release provides. CentOS-family dependency names and enabled repositories vary by version.
- Identify the distribution and release with
cat /etc/os-release. - Search the distribution’s repositories for the missing SONAME.
- Install the runtime package, not only a development package, unless your distribution requires both.
- Run
lddagain until no required library is markednot found.
4. Make the fix permanent in Docker and CI
A library installed on your workstation does not exist in a separate container or hosted runner. Add the packages to the image that launches Chrome, rebuild it, and deploy that rebuilt image.

Debian-based Docker example
FROM node:22-bookworm
RUN apt-get update
&& apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends
libglib2.0-0
&& rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
WORKDIR /app
COPY package*.json ./
RUN npm ci
COPY . .
CMD ["node", "app.js"]
This snippet demonstrates the placement of the runtime package; your browser may require additional packages reported by ldd or listed in Puppeteer’s Linux guidance. Rebuild without relying on an old layer, then verify inside the resulting image:
docker build --no-cache -t puppeteer-app .
docker run --rm puppeteer-app cat /etc/os-release
Run the dependency check inside the container against the browser path used by the application. In CI, make the same installation part of the job image or setup step. Installing a package in one job and executing the browser in another isolated job will not carry the fix forward.

Puppeteer has two independent prerequisites: a browser executable must exist, and that executable must be able to load its Linux dependencies.
When the browser was not downloaded
The puppeteer package normally downloads Chrome for Testing (and, from Puppeteer v21.6.0, chrome-headless-shell). Package managers or deployments that disable install scripts can skip this download. Install the browser explicitly with:
npx puppeteer browsers install
If no executable exists, this is a browser-install/configuration problem rather than a missing-libgobject problem.

When using puppeteer-core
puppeteer-core does not download Chrome. You must manage a compatible browser yourself and provide its path or channel. After doing so, run ldd against that exact binary. A system browser may be updated independently of your Node.js dependencies, so record the path and browser version in your deployment configuration.
6. Retest with a minimal launch
After installing dependencies, test the smallest possible script in the target runtime:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'});
console.log(await page.title());
await browser.close();
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exit(1);
});
If it fails, repeat ldd against the executable selected by this process. Avoid changing several unrelated launch flags at once; otherwise you will not know which change affected the result.
Common symptoms and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
libgobject-2.0.so.0 is “not found” |
GLib runtime package is absent | Install the distribution’s package that provides the SONAME (commonly libglib2.0-0 on Debian/Ubuntu), then rerun ldd. |
| Several libraries are “not found” | Minimal container image lacks Chrome runtime dependencies | Install every reported dependency in the image; rebuild and redeploy. |
Could not find Chrome |
Browser download was skipped or no path was configured | Run npx puppeteer browsers install for puppeteer, or install and configure a browser for puppeteer-core. |
| Works locally, fails in CI or Docker | Different filesystem, user, image, architecture, or package set | Inspect the executable and run ldd inside the failing runtime; add packages to its build. |
| Sandbox error after dependencies are fixed | Separate Chrome sandbox permissions/configuration issue | Configure a supported sandbox for the runtime. Do not add --no-sandbox as a library fix; disabling the sandbox weakens isolation. |
ldd is clean but launch still fails |
Wrong executable, permissions, architecture, or a later startup error | Verify file, execute --version, confirm the launch path, and read the complete Chrome stderr output. |
Performance, reliability, and maintenance
- Prefer image-level installation: baking dependencies into a Docker image avoids downloading packages during every job and makes failures reproducible.
- Pin the runtime deliberately: record the base-image release and browser source. A browser update can introduce a new dependency even when application code is unchanged.
- Use the smallest practical image, not an incomplete one: removing unused packages is useful, but stripping libraries required by Chrome causes startup failures.
- Check the real user context: a root shell, an application user, and a CI runner can have different Puppeteer caches and browser paths.
- Keep diagnostics in deployment logs: capture the browser path,
cat /etc/os-release, and unresolvedlddoutput when troubleshooting ephemeral runners.

If your goal is a reliable website image or PDF rather than local browser automation, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie/consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options, including full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF paper and page settings, custom CSS/JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, cookies, headers, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification.

FAQ
Does reinstalling Puppeteer fix this error?
Usually not. Reinstalling JavaScript packages does not add a missing Linux shared library. Repair the operating-system environment and verify the browser executable with ldd.
Can I symlink another version of the library?
Do not create an arbitrary symlink. Shared-library filenames encode ABI expectations; install the package that officially provides the required SONAME for your distribution.
Why does the error appear only after a deployment?
The deployed image or runner may use a minimal base, a different architecture, a different browser path, or a different user cache. Compare the failing runtime—not the developer workstation—using its browser path and dependency output.

Is libgobject-2.0.so.0 a Puppeteer file?
No. It is a Linux shared library loaded by the Chrome process that Puppeteer starts.
Should I use –no-sandbox to get past the message?
No. That flag addresses a separate sandbox failure and is not a missing-library repair; disabling the sandbox reduces isolation.
