If PS Portal Remote Play is lagging, disconnecting, or looking soft, first check the session’s network status, then test the connection with fewer devices competing for Wi-Fi and try wiring the PS5 to the router. PlayStation says Remote Play needs at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance—but meeting those speeds alone does not guarantee a stable stream.
Start by locating the problem
During a Remote Play session, open the PS Portal Quick Menu and select Troubleshoot > Show Network Status. This gives you a view of the current session. Also check whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi: if several devices are having trouble, the issue may be with the wider network rather than the Portal. PlayStation directs users with general Wi-Fi problems to contact their internet service provider.

Change one condition at a time, then retest. Try the Portal near the router, pause household downloads, connect the PS5 to Ethernet if it is currently on Wi-Fi, or test on another known-working Wi-Fi network. These comparisons can help narrow down where the weakness lies, but they are troubleshooting experiments—not a guaranteed fault-isolation procedure. PlayStation’s PS Portal troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the network and trying a wired PS5 connection for unstable Remote Play.

Improve Wi-Fi conditions and reduce competition
Pause downloads on other devices while you test. If that is not enough, temporarily disconnect devices using the same Wi-Fi access point. Then test the Portal close to the router. A better result nearby points toward a coverage or interference problem along the Portal’s usual route, though it does not identify the exact cause.

- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
- When the PS5 is using Wi-Fi, place both the Portal and PS5 closer to the router and avoid obstacles between devices and the access point, as PlayStation recommends.
- Where available, test a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. Public networks may not support Portal connections to certain networks or bands, so a public 5 GHz network is not assured to work.
- If several devices struggle on the same Wi-Fi, look beyond the Portal: check the access point and contact your ISP if the network itself is failing.
PlayStation’s general Remote Play connection advice also recommends pausing other downloads and checking the network. See its Remote Play connection troubleshooting.
Try connecting the PS5 to the router by Ethernet
If the PS5 currently uses Wi-Fi and you can connect it to the router with Ethernet, test that while leaving the Portal’s Wi-Fi unchanged. PlayStation specifically recommends a wired PS5 connection for unstable PS Portal Remote Play. If you need a longer cable, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is one option; you do not need to buy one if the PS5 is already wired or you have a suitable cable.
Ethernet can help determine whether the PS5’s wireless link is contributing to the problem. It cannot guarantee a fix for congestion, an ISP issue, or a problem elsewhere on the connection path.

Check speed, but don’t treat it as the whole diagnosis
PlayStation states that Remote Play needs at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance. Test both directions on the network you are using. These are Sony’s stated connection-speed figures; a speed test does not establish that a connection is free of latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, or momentary congestion.
If a test falls below those figures, reduce other network use and retest. If it meets them but Remote Play still stutters, continue with the Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and session checks rather than assuming the speed result proves the connection is healthy.
Adjust the Portal’s maximum resolution to test image quality
PlayStation says Remote Play video quality is automatically adjusted based on the quality of the internet connection. During a session, open the Quick Menu and check Max Resolution. The Portal offers 1080p Standard and 1080p High Quality as maximum-resolution choices. Choosing a maximum does not guarantee that the stream will maintain that quality when the connection is struggling.

If the image is unstable, try the lower maximum as a diagnostic test, then compare the result. It may not resolve a particular network problem; restore your preferred setting afterward if you wish. Details are in PlayStation’s PS Portal support information.
Check PS5 settings if connection or wake-up fails
If the Portal cannot start Remote Play or wake the console, check the PS5 setup as well as the network:
- On the PS5, make sure Remote Play is enabled, the console is online, and the same account is being used on the PS5 and Portal.
- To start Remote Play while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Install current PS5 system software. If you are setting up a connection away from home, first test that the Portal connects while near the PS5.
These checks are especially relevant when Remote Play will not connect or the PS5 will not wake; they are not a substitute for the network tests above when the session connects but lags. See PlayStation’s PS Portal troubleshooting steps.

Consider router settings only after the basic tests
PlayStation’s general Remote Play guidance identifies UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. Those details may matter if connection setup fails, but changing router settings is not a general remedy for lag or poor image quality. Do not start with port forwarding. If you are unfamiliar with NAT or router configuration, ask your ISP, router provider, or mobile carrier for help. See PlayStation’s Remote Play connection guidance.
If Portal Wi-Fi errors continue
If the Portal still cannot join Wi-Fi after you check its network and access-point settings, try another network if one is available. For continued PS Portal-specific Wi-Fi errors, follow PlayStation’s error-code guidance or contact PlayStation Repairs. A factory reset is not a routine response to lag: PlayStation’s reset guidance concerns a system error and warns that resetting erases data and customized settings.
