If Netflix looks blurry, pixelated, or softer than expected, first check whether it happens with one title or everything you watch. Then verify the title’s quality and your plan, test the connection, review playback and mobile-data settings, and check the device and any connected display equipment. Netflix adjusts streaming quality to the available connection, so a picture may start at lower resolution and improve after playback begins.

First, identify what kind of picture problem you have

This guide addresses a blurry, low-quality, or pixelated picture. A distorted image, glitches, skipping, or stuttering can point to a device or video-cable problem instead; Netflix has a separate troubleshooting path for those symptoms.

Check whether the problem affects one title or all titles

  • If only one show or movie looks wrong, report that title from your Netflix Viewing Activity.
  • If multiple titles have the same problem, continue with the checks below.

Confirm the title and plan can play at the quality you expect

Open the title’s details on the device you are using and look for its available quality labels, such as HD, 4K, 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, or HDR. A label describes supported playback for that device and title; it does not guarantee that the stream will always arrive at that resolution. Your Netflix plan and the playback device also need to support the target quality.

Some phones may not play HDR even when a title carries an HDR label. Low-power mode or cellular playback can be a factor. If the picture looks unexpectedly soft on a phone, check those conditions as well as the phone’s supported video capabilities.

Test the connection Netflix is actually using

Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. These are recommendations, not guarantees: Netflix adapts resolution to connection conditions, and speed can vary during playback.

Target resolution Netflix’s recommended stable speed
720p At least 3 Mbps
1080p At least 5 Mbps
4K At least 15 Mbps

On a computer or mobile device, Netflix directs viewers to Fast.com to check speed. On a TV-connected device, use Netflix’s in-app Check your Network flow. If the measured speed is below the recommendation for your target, Netflix advises contacting your internet service provider.

An internet plan’s advertised maximum is not necessarily the speed Netflix receives while you stream. Data travels across Netflix’s service, your provider’s network, and your home connection; congestion at any point, weak Wi-Fi, or other household activity can affect the picture. Try a wired connection if practical, or improve the Wi-Fi signal near the streaming device. If several people are using the connection, pause bandwidth-heavy activity briefly and check whether playback improves.

Review playback quality and data-use settings

Change the playback setting for the affected profile

In a browser, open Account, select the profile, and open Playback Settings. Netflix lists High or Auto for 1080p and 4K, and Medium, High, or Auto for 720p. These settings apply per profile.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Auto lets Netflix adapt to the connection. An explicit setting can help when speeds vary, but forcing higher quality may cause buffering or freezing on a weak or unstable connection. If that happens, return to Auto. Higher quality also consumes more data.

Check account-level data use

Netflix’s account data-use options are Low (up to 0.3 GB per hour), Medium (up to 0.7 GB per hour), High (up to 1 GB per hour for SD, 3 GB for HD, or 7 GB for UHD), and Auto, which adjusts to the connection. These are Netflix’s estimates, not fixed amounts for every title or viewing session. If the profile is set to Low or Medium, that limit may be the reason the picture does not reach the quality you expect.

Check cellular playback on a phone or tablet

In the Netflix app, open App Settings > Cellular Data Usage. Options include Automatic, Wi-Fi Only, Save Data, and Maximum Data. Maximum Data selects the highest quality available for the device and title and can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more. A separate account-level data setting can also limit mobile playback, so check both controls if cellular video looks poor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check every device and connection between Netflix and the screen

For the intended resolution to reach your display, the entire playback chain must support it: the Netflix plan, streaming device, receiver or soundbar if used, display, software, output-resolution setting, HDMI port, and cable. A single component with a lower capability can limit playback to the highest quality supported by the setup.

  • If a receiver sits between a streaming device and TV, confirm that it supports the target resolution and HDR format and can pass them through.
  • For 4K/HDR, Netflix specifies an HDMI port supporting HDCP 2.2 or later. For Premium-plan quality, it specifies a Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.

A cable is relevant when an external 4K/HDR chain is the bottleneck; replacing a cable is not a general fix for blur caused by a slow or unstable internet connection.

Account for computer browser limits

Maximum playback resolution on a computer depends on the operating system, browser or app, and hardware. Netflix’s Windows guidance lists Edge and the Netflix Windows app as capable of up to 4K on supported systems, while Firefox and Opera are listed up to Full HD. Specific system and hardware requirements apply, and limits differ by platform. Check Netflix’s current system requirements for your operating system and browser rather than assuming a browser supports the same resolution everywhere.

Choose the right download quality

For downloaded titles on Android, iPhone, or iPad, Netflix offers Standard and High or Higher quality options. Standard uses less storage and downloads in SD. High or Higher takes longer and uses more storage; it can play up to 1080p when both the device and title support HD. If a downloaded episode looks softer than streamed playback, check the download-quality setting before changing network or display hardware.

If the picture is still poor

Make one change at a time and replay the same title so you can tell which step helped. If the issue persists after checking the connection, plan, profile settings, device capability, and external chain, Netflix recommends contacting the device manufacturer after confirming the supported setup. Avoid a factory reset as an early troubleshooting step: depending on the device, reset steps can remove apps, data, or settings.

For more detail, see Netflix’s guidance on getting the best video quality, internet connection speed recommendations, data usage, HDMI connection requirements, video glitches and other playback problems, and download quality.
