Fix poor Core Web Vitals by first confirming which real-user segment is failing, then diagnosing that metric with browser tools, changing the specific bottleneck, and checking field data again. Google’s good targets are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds, and CLS at or below 0.1, assessed at the 75th percentile separately for mobile and desktop. A generic checklist cannot identify the cause on your site; that requires its measurements and traces.
What poor Core Web Vitals scores mean
Core Web Vitals cover three parts of user experience: loading (Largest Contentful Paint, or LCP), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint, or INP), and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift, or CLS). Google’s thresholds are evaluated at the 75th percentile: at least three quarters of measured visits should meet the good threshold for the relevant segment. These are operational targets, not a guarantee that every visit feels identical. See Google’s Web Vitals overview and threshold methodology.
| Metric | What it measures | Good | Needs improvement | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LCP | Time until the largest visible image or text block renders | ≤2.5 seconds | >2.5 to 4 seconds | >4 seconds |
| INP | Responsiveness across user interactions | ≤200 milliseconds | >200 to 500 milliseconds | >500 milliseconds |
| CLS | Unexpected movement of visible content | ≤0.1 | >0.1 to 0.25 | >0.25 |
Read results by device as well as metric: good desktop data can conceal a poor mobile experience. Also note whether a report describes a specific URL or the whole origin. Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) data may not be available at URL level for every page; a site’s real-user monitoring (RUM) can provide additional evidence.
Use field data to find the failing pages and users
- Check PageSpeed Insights or Chrome DevTools. Look for CrUX field data when available, and record whether it is URL-level or origin-level and whether it represents mobile or desktop.
- Separate real-user outcomes from lab results. Field data reflects eligible real Chrome users; lab runs are controlled tests useful for diagnosing causes. RUM can supplement CrUX, but the populations and measurement coverage may differ.
- Choose a representative failing page and path. Identify the affected template, device segment, and—especially for INP or CLS—the interaction or scroll flow associated with the problem.
- Keep comparisons consistent. For lab runs, use the same URL, device profile, network conditions, and interaction flow before and after a change.
Google describes lab measurement as useful for testing features during development, before they reach users. A better lab result is evidence about that test run; verify real-user improvement in field data as it accumulates.

Diagnose and fix a slow LCP
LCP is not simply the time it takes an image to download. Its timing can include previous-page unload, connection setup, redirects, server response, resource discovery and loading, and rendering. Use PageSpeed Insights or a Chrome DevTools Performance trace to find the LCP element and inspect its subpart timings. Follow the slow stage rather than applying unrelated optimizations. Google’s Optimize Largest Contentful Paint guide explains this timing breakdown.
When server response is slow
A high time to first byte (TTFB) consumes the 2.5-second good-LCP budget before the browser can do much with the page. Check for redirect chains, distance between users and the server, poor network conditions, and cache misses—for example, query parameters that prevent content from being served from cache. If TTFB is high, reducing image bytes alone may not materially improve LCP.

When rendering starts late
If there is a large gap between TTFB and first contentful paint, inspect render-blocking resources and whether client-side rendering must finish before meaningful content appears. Use the trace to identify the work holding up rendering; do not assume that a framework or script is at fault without evidence.
When the browser discovers the LCP resource late
Check when the LCP image, font, or other resource begins loading relative to the initial HTML document. Make important resources discoverable early and prioritize them appropriately. Use the resource timing evidence before adding preload hints indiscriminately.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
When transfer time is the bottleneck
Reduce the size of the actual LCP resource. For an image, check that its dimensions match the display size, use an appropriate modern format, and compress it. For a web font, reduce the font payload where possible. Target the resource identified in the trace, not every image or font on the page.
When the resource is ready but LCP still waits
A long render delay points to work preventing the LCP element from appearing after its resource is available. Inspect CSS, JavaScript, and rendering activity in the trace, then change the blocking work the evidence identifies. LCP is a sequence: speeding up one stage may have little effect if a different stage remains slow.

Diagnose and improve INP
INP measures responsiveness across interactions, so a page-load-only Lighthouse run without user input cannot directly measure it. Lighthouse’s Total Blocking Time (TBT) is a lab proxy: reducing main-thread blocking can help responsiveness, but TBT and INP are calculated differently and are not interchangeable scores. Use field data to locate pages and user experiences with slow interaction response, then reproduce representative interactions in Chrome DevTools and inspect main-thread work around them. The trace helps diagnose a cause; it does not prove the page’s field INP.
Recommended Free Tools
When investigating, connect the slow field result to a real action—such as opening a menu or submitting a form—and examine what runs on the main thread around that action. The appropriate change depends on the handler and work shown by the trace; a page-specific measurement is needed before naming a particular code fix.

Diagnose and prevent CLS
CLS rises when visible content shifts unexpectedly. Common causes include images without dimensions, ads or embeds without reserved space, content inserted dynamically, and web fonts. Use DevTools’ layout-shifts track and test representative page-load, scroll, and interaction flows; the default page-load view can miss shifts that happen later.
- Images and video: Set
widthandheightattributes or reserve the correct aspect ratio so the browser allocates space before the media arrives. - Ads, embeds, and iframes: Reserve a suitable minimum height or aspect ratio, and account for responsive ad sizes. A larger reserved area can prevent movement but may leave blank space.
- Injected content: Avoid inserting banners, forms, or other content into the document flow without warning. Use a placeholder or skeleton, or an overlay where that suits the design.
- Fonts: Check whether a web font changes text dimensions after it loads; the CLS guide identifies fonts as a potential cause.
- Post-load behavior: Test scrolling and user flows, not only the initial render. Use DevTools interaction monitoring or field attribution to investigate movements outside the initial load.
Shifts within 500 milliseconds of qualifying user input are excluded from CLS, but that grace period is not permission for jarring movement. Shifts triggered by scrolling or pointer hover may still count. CrUX may also capture iframe shifts that ordinary page Web APIs cannot expose to a site’s own instrumentation, so treat CrUX and RUM as complementary views rather than assuming they will match.
Deploy the change and verify the result
- Repeat the comparable lab run after the change and check whether the targeted element, stage, interaction, or shift improved.
- Check field results again as sufficient real-user data accumulates, keeping URL or origin and mobile or desktop segments distinct.
- If the field metric remains poor, revisit the trace and identify the next slow stage or shifting element. Do not treat a lab score change alone as proof of real-user improvement.
The same metric can fail for different reasons on different templates, devices, and navigation paths. An individual site’s actual bottleneck can only be identified from its field data and diagnostic evidence.
