1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlex Live TV buffering, missing OTA channels, and playback errors have different likely causes: a network or transcoding bottleneck, a tuner or reception problem, incorrect channel mapping, or a client-specific issue. Check the affected path before changing hardware or settings. This guide covers antenna-based over-the-air (OTA) TV watched through a tuner connected to Plex Media Server; Plex’s separate free streaming channels do not work with its DVR feature.
Why is Plex Live TV buffering?
Plex identifies two broad causes of most buffering: the connection cannot carry the requested stream, or Plex Media Server cannot transcode it quickly enough. Start in the Plex app on the device that is buffering: app streaming quality is controlled on the client, not by a server setting. Confirm whether you are watching at home or remotely, then choose a quality appropriate for that connection and device. A faster internet plan is not automatically the answer for local OTA viewing; first determine whether the stream is being transcoded and whether the connection or server is struggling.
Check the requested quality and client
If the problem occurs only on one television, console, or other client, lower that app’s streaming quality and test again. Some Smart TV and PlayStation apps may run into memory limits at high bitrates, according to Plex’s buffering troubleshooting guidance. On a fast local connection, raising the app’s quality can sometimes let Plex skip transcoding or only remux compatible content. App capabilities and labels can change, so use the current settings available in your Plex client.
Use the server log to check transcoding speed
If lowering quality does not resolve the issue, temporarily enable verbose logging and inspect the Plex Media Server log while the affected stream is playing. Look for entries containing speed =>. Plex’s guidance treats a value below 1.0 as slower than real time, meaning the server is not keeping up with the attempted transcode. A value of 1.0 indicates real-time transcoding; Plex says an average around 1.3 or greater is sufficient for the attempted stream. These are diagnostic thresholds in Plex’s article, not universal performance guarantees or a benchmark for every system.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- If the logged speed is below real time, reduce the requested quality or avoid transcoding where the client and connection can handle the source stream. CPU limits and low-powered NAS hardware can contribute.
- If the transcode is keeping pace but the stream still buffers, investigate the connection between the server and client and the client’s bitrate or memory limits rather than buying a new server immediately.
Why are channels missing from my Plex guide?
First distinguish a channel the tuner does not receive from one Plex receives but does not show correctly in the guide. OTA Live TV requires both a compatible tuner and an antenna. Plex’s supported tuner and antenna guidance says signal quality and suitable antenna choice depend on local channel availability and the distance and direction of broadcast sources.
Confirm tuner detection and rescan
- In Plex Media Server’s DVR setup or channel management screens, confirm that Plex detects the tuner.
- Check that the antenna and tuner are connected and powered as required by their manufacturers, then run a channel rescan.
- Review the selected signal type, country and postal code, and program-guide lineup. Make sure scanned tuner channels are mapped to the intended guide channels.
Exact screen names can vary by Plex version. Plex allows rescanning and manual changes to channel mappings; its channel-mapping instructions explain how to review those assignments. Guide data may not be available for some low-power local stations, so a channel missing from guide listings does not by itself prove that the tuner failed.

Check reception, tuner compatibility, and access
- If a station is absent from the scan or has a weak signal, check antenna placement and direction relative to local broadcast sources. Plex says any digital antenna can work, but the appropriate choice depends on location and stations; amplification may help in some situations, not all.
- If Plex intermittently loses a network tuner, Plex recommends giving it a stable local IP, for example with a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Verify that the tuner is supported for the Plex Media Server platform and region. Plex expects exclusive access to a tuner; another app or device using it at the same time can cause tuning problems or failed recordings.
- Check for current tuner firmware or drivers. Plex’s tuner documentation lists SiliconDust HDHomeRun models among supported devices, but confirm the current compatibility list for your platform before purchasing or replacing equipment.
Why does Plex show Live TV playback errors?
Start with the exact wording of the error rather than treating every failure as a transcoder problem. Note whether it happens on one client or several, whether it affects live viewing or a recording, and whether it occurs on one channel or all channels. Then check Plex Media Server logs and determine whether Plex is attempting a transcode.
“The transcoder exited due to an error”
Plex documents the Windows message “Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.” Its Windows transcoder troubleshooting article identifies Malwarebytes Premium Web Protection as a possible cause in rare cases. That is a specific Windows troubleshooting lead, not evidence that other security software or operating systems are responsible. Check the server logs for the failed session before changing security settings.

“Please check your tuner or antenna”
The message “Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna.” is another example in Plex’s Windows troubleshooting material. When an error is limited to a particular channel, or explicitly mentions the tuner or antenna, check tuner detection, signal strength, current firmware or drivers, and whether another device or program is occupying the tuner. Weak OTA reception can affect both live viewing and DVR recordings.
Use the error pattern to narrow the fault
- One client fails while others work: examine that app’s quality setting and device limitations.
- Several clients fail during the same stream and logs show a slow transcode: investigate server transcoding capacity and stream quality.
- Only particular stations fail, disappear from scans, or trigger tuner-related errors: check reception, channel mapping, and tuner access.
- Guide listings are absent while the tuner still scans the station: check lineup selection and guide-data availability rather than assuming reception has failed.
Check Plex Live TV requirements before changing the setup
Plex’s supported tuner page, last modified February 3, 2025, lists Plex Media Server v1.16.1 or newer for DVR functionality and advises using the latest release. Because compatible apps, tuners, platforms, and server requirements can change, consult Plex’s current compatibility information for the actual server platform and region.
