Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMost Playwright WebKit errors are environment problems rather than test-code problems. Install the WebKit revision that matches your Playwright package, install Linux libraries when required, and prove the browser with a tiny awaited launch–navigate–screenshot–close script. Then use browser/API debug logs and a trace to locate failures in startup, navigation, visual readiness, or file output.
1. Identify the stage that is failing
Separate the failure before changing application code. There are four useful stages:
- Browser process:
webkit.launch()fails, often with a missing executable, library, permission, or display error. - Page navigation: launch succeeds but
page.goto()times out, is blocked, or returns an unexpected page. - Visual readiness: navigation succeeds but the screenshot is blank, stale, or taken while fonts, images, animations, or client rendering are still pending.
- File output: the screenshot is produced incorrectly because the destination directory is absent, unwritable, or the browser is closed before the awaited capture completes.
Record the Playwright version first:
npx playwright --version
Run that command in the same container, virtual machine, user account, working directory, and CI job that executes the test. A browser installed on your laptop does not repair a missing browser in a CI image.
2. Install the matching WebKit browser
Playwright uses its own browser binaries. After installing or updating the npm package, install its WebKit build:

npx playwright install webkit
On Linux, where required system libraries may be absent, install both the browser and operating-system dependencies:
npx playwright install --with-deps webkit
Run these commands inside the environment where the test runs. If you update playwright or @playwright/test, run npx playwright --version again and reinstall WebKit so the browser revision matches the package. In a container, put installation in the image build or the job setup rather than relying on a developer’s global cache.
Do not substitute a system WebKit while diagnosing
The BrowserType API exposes executablePath(), but Playwright is designed around its bundled browsers. Pointing WebKit at an unrelated system executable can introduce incompatible revisions, launch flags, or missing support. First demonstrate that the bundled browser launches. Only investigate a custom executable as a deliberate, separately tested configuration.
3. Run a minimal WebKit smoke test
This removes your test fixtures, application, and assertions from the equation:
const { webkit } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await webkit.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://playwright.dev/');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
Execute it with node smoke.js. Every operation is awaited. If it fails before page.goto, concentrate on installation, executable startup, permissions, sandbox policy, and operating-system dependencies. If navigation succeeds but the image fails, check the output path and page state rather than reinstalling the browser repeatedly.
Make the smoke test deterministic
For repeatable visual checks, set a viewport and use a known output directory:

const fs = require('node:fs');
const { webkit } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
fs.mkdirSync('artifacts', { recursive: true });
const browser = await webkit.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://playwright.dev/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/playwright.webp', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
networkidle is not a universal “ready” signal; applications with polling or WebSockets may never become idle. In those cases, wait for the selector that proves the page is ready, or wait for a documented application event, instead of adding an arbitrary long delay.
4. Fix Linux and CI launch failures
Headless versus headed execution
Playwright runs headless by default. Ordinary CI jobs should remain headless unless headed rendering is specifically required. A headed Linux browser needs an X server. Playwright’s CI guidance states that headed execution on Linux agents requires Xvfb; invoke the test through it:
Recommended Free Tools
xvfb-run npx playwright test
Install Xvfb in the CI image before that command. If you do not need to watch the browser, removing headless: false is simpler than adding a virtual display.
Capture the first process error
A final timeout often hides the useful line. Enable browser-process logging and retain the complete output:
DEBUG=pw:browser npx playwright test
Look for the first missing shared library, permission denial, executable path, sandbox, or process-start message. On Windows PowerShell, set the variable with $env:DEBUG="pw:browser"; in a POSIX shell use the form above. Fix the named dependency or environment setting, then rerun the smoke test in the same image.
5. Diagnose navigation and screenshot timing
When launch works, use API sequencing logs:
DEBUG=pw:api npx playwright test
Compare the log with what the screenshot should show. Confirm that:

page.goto()resolves successfully and the URL is the expected one after redirects.- The page’s actual ready selector exists before capture.
- Authentication, cookies, feature flags, and test data are present.
- Images and fonts have loaded when they affect the visual assertion.
- Animations, carousels, and transitions have settled or been disabled for the capture.
- The viewport, device scale factor, color scheme, locale, and timezone are intentional.
A screenshot call is asynchronous. Keep await page.screenshot(...) and close the browser only after it resolves. Closing immediately can produce a truncated file or no file at all.
Blank images
A blank image can represent a blank response, an application that has not rendered, a failed resource load, an incorrect viewport, or a capture taken before the first meaningful state. Check the page title and URL, wait for a concrete application selector, and inspect console and network errors. If the destination file exists but is zero bytes or unexpectedly small, verify directory permissions and that the promise was awaited.
Stale images
Ensure that each run writes to a unique or deliberately replaced path. Wait for the state that changes between runs, and avoid capturing while a client-side route transition is in progress. If the page uses lazy images, scroll or trigger the application’s loading mechanism before capture; a successful navigation does not guarantee that below-the-fold assets are ready.
6. Use headed mode and slow motion locally
Reproduce timing-sensitive failures where you can observe them:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →const browser = await webkit.launch({ headless: false, slowMo: 150 });
headless: false reveals redirects, overlays, layout shifts, and popups. slowMo spaces operations so a race is visible. These settings diagnose a problem; they are not a substitute for a deterministic wait in CI.
Playwright’s debugging guidance includes an important WebKit limitation: launching WebKit Inspector during execution can stop the script from progressing and reset preconfigured user-agent and device emulation. Treat that behavior as an Inspector limitation, not proof that the underlying test is fixed.

7. Capture and inspect a trace
When logs show that commands ran but not why the image is wrong, enable tracing in the test runner and open the resulting trace with Trace Viewer. The trace combines:
- DOM snapshots at action points;
- the action timeline and durations;
- console messages;
- network requests and failures;
- screenshots and page artifacts;
- error panels.
Find the first divergence: a failed navigation, a missing selector, a console exception, a resource that never loaded, or a screenshot taken before the intended state. The trace is especially useful when local headed mode succeeds but a Linux headless job differs.

8. Make visual comparisons reproducible
Keep the following fixed and record them with any failure:
- operating-system image and installed fonts;
- Playwright package version and WebKit revision;
- viewport dimensions and device scale factor;
- browser context settings such as locale, timezone, color scheme, and user agent;
- test data and application revision;
- the exact screenshot path and format.
Differences limited to antialiasing or platform font rendering may be legitimate rather than a launch defect. Do not relax visual thresholds until you know whether the difference is caused by rendering environment, page state, or a failed resource.
9. A failure-to-fix checklist
- Run
npx playwright --versionin the failing environment. - Run
npx playwright install webkit; on Linux add--with-deps. - Run the minimal smoke test with the same user, container, directory, and permissions.
- If launch fails, collect
DEBUG=pw:browserand fix the first startup error. - If launch succeeds, collect
DEBUG=pw:apiand verify URL, waits, console output, and output path. - Reproduce locally with
headless: falseand optionalslowMo. - Inspect a Trace Viewer trace before changing screenshot thresholds.
- Only after the environment is proven, debug application selectors, data, and visual assertions.
Or skip the browser setup
If your requirement is simply a reliable website image or PDF rather than browser-level test control, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET API and an MCP server for developers and AI agents. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
One request is enough (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or delay waits, network-idle waits, request/resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—let Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client perform captures without you wiring Playwright into the agent.

10. Cost, reliability, and operational notes
Self-hosted Playwright gives you control over browser revision, fonts, OS libraries, test data, and artifacts, but you must maintain those dependencies in every runner. Pin package versions, install browsers during image construction, cache downloads safely, and retain the first startup log plus the screenshot and trace artifact for failed jobs. Keep ordinary CI headless and reserve Xvfb for tests that genuinely require headed rendering.
An external capture API trades that maintenance for a request boundary. Check HTTP status, X-Page-Verdict, and X-Billed when using ScreenshotNeo, and choose a cache TTL or asynchronous webhook flow when a large batch does not need to block a build. Neither approach removes the need to define what “ready” means for a dynamic page; it only changes who operates the browser.

Why does WebKit work locally but fail in CI?
The CI environment may lack the matching Playwright WebKit revision, Linux libraries, permissions, or a display for headed mode. Install WebKit in the job image, use –with-deps on Linux, keep CI headless unless Xvfb is installed, and compare DEBUG=pw:browser logs.
Should I use a system-installed WebKit executable?
Not while diagnosing the failure. Prove the Playwright-bundled browser first; an unrelated executable can have an incompatible revision or launch configuration.
Why is my screenshot file blank even though goto succeeded?
Navigation completion does not guarantee visual readiness. Wait for the application’s ready selector, check console and resource errors, verify viewport and test data, and ensure the awaited screenshot writes to a writable directory.
What should I preserve from a failed CI run?
Keep the Playwright version, WebKit revision, complete browser/API debug logs, trace, screenshot artifact, OS image, viewport, device scale factor, and font information.
