If a headed Playwright run opens a Chromium window but shows only its border or a transparent surface, first check the display server, then confirm the page navigated, verify the viewport and DOM, and only then investigate the browser binary or rendering. A visible window does not prove the page loaded—or that the machine can display it. This sequence separates those causes without starting with guesswork or GPU flags.
What a border-only Chromium window tells you
Chromium has launched, but the window’s page surface is not giving you a useful view. That can happen because the environment cannot display a headed browser correctly, because the test never left about:blank, because the page or viewport is effectively invisible, or because the chosen browser target or page rendering is at fault. The symptom alone does not identify which one.
A Stack Overflow question published on November 25, 2022 describes Chromium in WSL as “transparent and only border is visible.” That is a reported symptom, not an official diagnosis or evidence that WSL is always the cause. Check the display setup when you see it, but verify navigation and page state too.
Playwright runs browsers headlessly by default. To see a browser window, use a headed run; headed mode, in turn, requires a functioning graphical display.

Start with a minimal, repeatable headed run
Reduce the test to one browser, one fixed viewport, and one known navigation. In a Playwright Test project, set the relevant options in playwright.config.ts:

}Replace https://example.com with the page under test. The slowMo delay is for observation, not a synchronization fix; remove it once diagnosis is complete. In either style, keep the viewport fixed while comparing runs so the host window size does not add another variable.

Check the display server in WSL, Linux, or CI
A headed browser needs a working graphical display. On a desktop, confirm the session is active. In WSL or a Linux CI environment, check that DISPLAY points to a live X server. A set variable is not proof that a usable server is available: the server must be running and reachable from the process that launches Playwright.
- Check whether a display is configured. In a shell, run
echo "$DISPLAY". If it is empty, the process has no X display configured. - Check that the configured display is live. If the value is present but Chromium is still transparent or fails to draw, verify the X server and the connection from the shell, container, or CI job running the test.
- Choose the right execution mode. If the environment has no desktop, run the headed test under Xvfb or use headless mode. Xvfb supplies a virtual display for graphical applications; it does not change what the test asserts or repair an application defect.
When the same test works on a desktop but not in WSL or CI, compare the display environments before changing the test or Chromium flags. When the display is known to work, continue through navigation and DOM checks rather than treating the border as proof of an X-server problem.
Prove that the test navigated and the page has content
A browser left on about:blank may be doing exactly what the test asked it to do. Add checks immediately after the navigation call, before changing launch flags:

- The URL is still
about:blank: the expected navigation did not happen, or the code is checking a different page than the one it navigated. Find the path topage.gotoand check which page instance the test uses. - The URL changed but the body is empty: check whether the application has rendered yet, whether the expected content is in a frame, or whether the page is displaying an overlay or error state.
- The URL and body are correct: the browser reached a document with content. Move on to viewport geometry and visibility rather than assuming navigation is the failure.
Wait for the application’s actual readiness signal—for example, a locator that represents the page state the test needs—rather than adding an arbitrary sleep. A fixed delay may make a slow run appear to work while leaving the underlying race unresolved.
Frames and popups can complicate the picture. Chromium’s handling of about:blank popups and document-written frames can mean expected frame content is not immediately visible to Playwright. Check the page and frame context that your test is inspecting; do not assume that content written into a frame has navigated the main page.

Verify viewport size, page geometry, and visibility
Playwright’s normal test configuration uses a fixed viewport. Setting viewport: null opts out of that size and lets the host window determine the viewport. That can be useful when the test is intentionally meant to use the host dimensions, but it makes diagnosis less repeatable across desktops, WSL, and CI. Start with an explicit viewport instead.
Record what the page reports from inside the page:

console.log('App box:', await app.boundingBox());Use your application’s real root selector in place of #app. An element with display: none or an empty bounding box is not visible to Playwright. Also check the page root and relevant container for zero dimensions, hidden styles, or an overlay covering the content. A non-empty body does not by itself mean that the expected application surface is visible.
Confirm which Chromium build Playwright is launching
Playwright’s browser targets are not interchangeable. It ships a regular Chromium build for headed operation and a separate Chromium headless shell for headless mode. Branded Chrome or Edge channels can behave differently from Playwright’s bundled browser. If the binary or channel changed recently, isolate that variable before investigating page rendering.
- Install Chromium for the Playwright version used by the project:
npx playwright install chromium. - Retry with the bundled Chromium and no custom
executablePath. - Remove experimental launch flags temporarily, then add any required flags back one at a time.
- If the issue occurs only with a Chrome or Edge channel, compare against the bundled Chromium to determine whether the channel is involved.
A clean bundled-browser run does not prove that every browser channel will display identically. It does tell you whether the problem is specific to the channel or executable you were using.

Collect evidence before changing rendering flags
Use Playwright’s Inspector, DOM snapshot, actionability log, and API logs to establish where the failure occurs. To enable verbose Playwright API logging on macOS or Linux:

npx playwright test --project=chromium --debugCapture a screenshot and trace after the first navigation. If the screenshot is blank but the URL and DOM are populated, that is different evidence from a test that never navigated or a process without a working display. Compare the Inspector’s DOM and actionability information with the screenshot to locate the gap: before navigation, inside a frame, in application rendering, or at the display layer.

If the URL, body text, viewport, and DOM snapshot all look right but the visible surface remains blank, compare headed and headless runs and inspect the rendering path that the page actually uses. Check application CSS, canvas or WebGL output, frames, and overlays. A page can have a valid DOM while a particular visual surface fails to appear.
Change GPU-related flags only as a controlled test: remove or add one at a time and compare the result. Do not assume --disable-gpu is the fix. It changes rendering behavior, may hide the original cause, and is not a substitute for finding whether the problem lies in the display, page, or browser target.
