For Playwright visual assertions, use await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ animations: 'disabled' }). Screenshot assertions already disable animations by default, but stating it explicitly makes the test’s intent clear. For direct page.screenshot() or locator screenshots, set the same option yourself: those calls allow animations by default. If captures still differ, target genuinely dynamic elements with a screenshot stylesheet or mask, then check that the baseline and test use the same rendering environment.
Choose the right screenshot API
| Capture method | Animation behavior | What to do |
|---|---|---|
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() |
Animations are disabled by default; it also waits for two consecutive captures to match before comparing with the expected image. Playwright PageAssertions API | Set animations: 'disabled' explicitly if you want the test’s configuration to be visible. |
page.screenshot() |
Defaults to animations: 'allow'. Playwright Page API |
Pass animations: 'disabled' for repeatable direct captures. |
| Locator screenshot | Supports the animation option. | Set animations: 'disabled' when capturing a locator directly. |
Disable animations in a Playwright Test assertion
Use this when the screenshot is part of a Playwright Test visual assertion. The explicit option matches the documented default for toHaveScreenshot().
import { expect, test } from '@playwright/test';
test('page visual state is stable', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ animations: 'disabled' });
});
The assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots produce the same result, then compares the last screenshot with the expectation. That wait helps with rendering that is still settling; it does not make intentionally changing page content constant. PageAssertions API
Set the default for screenshot assertions
To make the behavior consistent across assertions in a Playwright Test project, configure the screenshot assertion options in playwright.config.ts:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
expect: {
toHaveScreenshot: { animations: 'disabled' },
},
});
Playwright Test exposes toHaveScreenshot options through its expect configuration. This setting concerns the assertion API; still set the option on direct screenshot calls. TestConfig API
Disable animations for direct screenshots
If the test calls page.screenshot() rather than a screenshot assertion, pass the option on the call. Otherwise, its documented default allows animations.

await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
animations: 'disabled',
});
Locator screenshots also accept animation behavior options; apply animations: 'disabled' to the locator screenshot call when that is your capture path. See the Page API for page screenshot options.
Handle dynamic regions that remain different
Disabling animations will not freeze all content. A clock, rotating banner, cursor-like indicator, or other changing region may still vary between captures. Prefer suppressing only the unstable region so the rest of the page remains meaningfully tested.
Use a screenshot stylesheet
Playwright’s stylePath option lets you apply CSS for screenshot capture, including rules that filter volatile elements. The stylesheet applies through Shadow DOM and inner frames. Use a narrow selector and an intentional static treatment rather than hiding broad page areas. PageAssertions API · Visual comparisons guide

Mask a specific locator
When a particular element is the source of variation, mask its locator for the assertion instead of changing the whole page. Keep the mask limited to the dynamic component; otherwise, a real visual regression in the masked area can go unnoticed. The assertion API documents masking options. PageAssertions API
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Animation control addresses one source of screenshot variation, not every difference between runs. Playwright notes that host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Create and compare baselines in the same environment where practical. Visual comparisons guide

- Check that the browser version and execution mode match the baseline run.
- Keep relevant browser settings and the host environment consistent.
- Investigate whether a difference is an intended product change before updating a baseline.
Do not loosen comparison thresholds or refresh snapshots automatically just to make a failure disappear. Review the changed image first; update the approved baseline only when the visual change is intentional. Playwright documents updating snapshots with --update-snapshots. Visual comparisons guide
Troubleshoot persistent screenshot differences
- The screenshot still animates: Confirm which API creates it.
toHaveScreenshot()disables animations by default, butpage.screenshot()allows them unless you passanimations: 'disabled'. Apply the option to the actual capture call. - The assertion fails on a changing clock, banner, or cursor: Animation disabling does not stop all dynamic content. Use a targeted
stylePathrule or mask the specific locator. - The assertion seems to capture before rendering settles:
toHaveScreenshot()already waits for two consecutive matching captures. If the content keeps changing for reasons other than animation, isolate that region rather than assuming the wait makes it static. - The same page differs across machines or CI runs: Compare the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode with the baseline environment.
- A new baseline would make the test pass: Inspect the visual change first. Use
--update-snapshotsonly when the new appearance is intended.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling animations change the page state in a screenshot?
Playwright fast-forwards finite animations to completion, firing transitionend. Infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for capture, then played over afterward. See the PageAssertions API.
