If Playwright reports that a browser executable is missing, install the browser binaries for the same Playwright version your project uses. On Linux or CI, include the operating-system dependencies; behind a proxy, configure the proxy and trusted certificates before downloading. The fixes below cover Node.js, Python, Java, .NET, shared browser caches, and CI.
Why Playwright installation fails
Playwright has two parts that are easy to mistake for one: the language package and the browser binaries it controls. Installing or updating the package does not guarantee that the matching browser files are present. Each Playwright release expects specific browser revisions, so installing a new package version can require downloading its browsers again. The official guide states, “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.” See Playwright browser management.
Other common causes are missing Linux system libraries, blocked or intercepted downloads, browser files stored in a different location than the process expects, and CI jobs that run tests before installing browsers. Diagnose which category applies before reinstalling everything.
1. Check the package version and installed browsers
Run the version command for your language package, then use that same installation to inspect or install browsers. The exact package-manager command depends on the project; the browser commands below assume Playwright is already installed in its environment.

python -m playwright install --listIf the list does not include the browser revision needed by your installed Playwright version, install it again. Avoid relying on browser files left by an older version: a package update can change the required revisions. 2. Install the browser you need
Install all supported browsers when the project needs them, or specify a browser to reduce downloads and setup time. Use the command matching the language binding and environment where tests actually run.

If python points to a different environment from the one running your tests, use that environment’s interpreter explicitly (for example, python3 -m playwright install).

Use the Playwright CLI provided by the Maven dependency. The documented Maven invocation is:

After restoring or building the project, run the Playwright install script generated in the project output. A typical PowerShell command is:

3. Install Linux operating-system dependencies
A browser can be downloaded successfully and still fail to launch because Linux system libraries are absent. On a fresh Linux machine or CI runner, install the browser and its dependencies together, or install dependencies separately if the browser is already present.

pwsh bin/Debug/netX/playwright.ps1 install --with-deps chromiumUse the browser and dependency options documented for your binding: the names and invocation syntax can vary by language. On Linux, installing operating-system packages may require root or administrator privileges. If dependency installation is being performed through a proxy, run that step as root so the package manager’s proxy variables are preserved. 4. Resolve proxy, certificate, and download-timeout errors
By default, Playwright downloads browser archives from Microsoft’s CDN. A corporate proxy, firewall, or TLS inspection device can prevent the download even when ordinary web access works. The official browser guide describes proxy and timeout configuration at playwright.dev/docs/browsers; Python installation notes are at playwright.dev/python/docs/browsers.
Set the HTTPS proxy
Configure HTTPS_PROXY in the environment of the install process. Replace the example with your organization’s proxy address and any required port or authentication configuration:

npx playwright install chromiumFor Python, Java, or .NET, set the same environment variable before running that language’s install command. Follow your organization’s proxy requirements for credentials; do not commit secrets into scripts or source control.

Trust the corporate certificate
If the download fails with an error such as “self signed certificate in certificate chain,” the proxy may be intercepting TLS with an organization-issued certificate. For Node.js, set NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS to the trusted root certificate file supplied by your IT team:
export NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS=/path/to/corporate-root.pem
npx playwright install chromiumDo not disable certificate validation as a workaround. For other runtimes, configure trust using the certificate mechanism documented for that runtime and your organization.
Increase the download connection timeout
If an archive download is unusually slow or stalls, increase the timeout in milliseconds and retry:
export PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT=120000
npx playwright install chromiumChoose a value appropriate to your network; a longer timeout helps with slow connections but does not fix a blocked destination, invalid certificate, or incorrect proxy setting.
5. Fix browser-path and cache mismatches
Playwright normally stores downloaded browsers in a user cache location. If installation and test execution run as different users, in separate containers, or under different environments, the test process may look in a different cache and report a missing executable.
Use one shared browser path
Set PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH to the same directory before both installing browsers and running tests. Ensure the user running tests can read and execute files there:

Set PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH=0 before installation to use a hermetic installation under the project package directory:

npx playwright install chromiumThe installer and test process must use the same setting. A project-local location can make packaged or isolated environments easier to reason about, but it should not be confused with a general shared cache. See browser storage configuration.

CI machines are often fresh, so browser binaries and Linux libraries should be installed during setup, before test commands. The Playwright CI guide recommends using its Docker image on Linux agents or installing dependencies with the CLI: Playwright CI.
GitHub Actions example for Node.js
Install project dependencies, then install the browser runtime before running tests. Keep the Playwright package version pinned through your lockfile and use the project-local CLI:

When to use the Playwright Docker image
For Linux CI, the Playwright Docker image can provide a reproducible browser runtime and Linux dependencies. Match the image to the Playwright version used by the project; a mismatch can reintroduce missing or incompatible browser revisions. Common errors and fixes
- “Executable doesn’t exist” or “browser executable is missing”: install browsers using the same Playwright package version and environment that runs the test. Check
install --list, package version, user, and browser path. - Browser downloads but launch fails on Linux: install the required operating-system libraries with
install --with-depsorinstall-deps; confirm the process has permission to install packages. - Download fails or hangs behind a proxy: set
HTTPS_PROXY; if TLS interception is active, configureNODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTSfor Node.js; raisePLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUTfor slow transfers. - Works locally but fails in CI: ensure CI installs browsers and dependencies before tests, in the same job/container and user context. Consider a matching Playwright Docker image on Linux.
