Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Playwright reports that Microsoft Edge closed, first find the earliest error—not just the final “browser closed” message. Use Playwright’s documented msedge channel, confirm Edge is installed, and check whether launch failed, your code closed the browser or context, a user-data directory is being shared, or a managed policy or headless-mode difference is involved. The message alone does not identify one cause; the steps below narrow it down without changing several variables at once.
What “browser closed” means—and what to check first
A browser-closed report can be a downstream symptom of a failed launch, or it can mean that a browser or context actually shut down. The most useful clue is the first error in the complete output or trace. Note whether the failure happens during launch, after a context is created, during navigation, or after a test action.
Record the Playwright version, Edge channel and version, operating system, language binding, and whether the failure occurs locally, in a container, or in CI. Those details help distinguish a configuration issue from an environment-specific one; the error wording alone cannot establish the root cause.
Launch the supported Microsoft Edge channel
Playwright drives Edge through Chromium automation. Use the documented msedge channel rather than guessing an Edge executable path. Playwright does not install branded Edge by default, so make sure Edge is installed in the environment where the test runs.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Playwright Test configuration in JavaScript or TypeScript
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
use: {
channel: 'msedge',
},
});
Launch directly with the Playwright library
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ channel: 'msedge' });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(await page.title());
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
For Python, the equivalent launch option is channel="msedge":
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch(channel="msedge")
try:
page = browser.new_page()
page.goto("https://example.com")
print(page.title())
finally:
browser.close()
Playwright’s BrowserType documentation says Chromium-only Playwright can control Chrome or Edge, but works best with the Chromium version bundled with Playwright and does not guarantee compatibility with another version. If branded Edge is not essential to your test, compare with Playwright’s bundled Chromium before investigating less common changes.

Follow a controlled diagnostic sequence
- Capture the complete failure output. Keep the console or CI log from before launch through shutdown. In CI, Playwright’s guidance identifies
pw:browseroutput as useful when debugging “Failed to launch browser” errors. For Node.js, run withDEBUG=pw:browserset in the environment; in PowerShell, use$env:DEBUG='pw:browser'; npx playwright test. Look for the first launch error rather than treating the final closure report as the cause. - Check who closes the browser. Search for
browser.close(),context.close(), fixture teardown, and process cleanup. Make sure no cleanup path runs while another step still uses the browser. When using a persistent context, closing that context also closes its browser. - Use a dedicated, unique profile directory. Do not run simultaneous browser instances with the same user-data directory; browsers do not allow multiple instances to share one directory. Avoid pointing automation at a daily-use profile. Use a separate automation profile and ensure concurrent jobs do not reuse its directory.
- Temporarily remove custom launch changes. Return to Playwright defaults and the
msedgechannel, then test again. If a custom argument or executable path is necessary, add it back by itself and compare the output. Playwright warns that custom browser arguments can break its functionality, and that alternate executables are used at the user’s risk. - Check organization-managed Edge. Ask whether browser policies apply on a managed machine. Playwright’s Browsers guide warns that certain enterprise policies may affect its ability to launch and control Chrome and Edge; policy-managed environments are outside the Playwright project’s scope.
- Compare headed and headless runs where feasible. Edge’s new headless mode is closer to headed behavior and differs from the Chromium headless shell Playwright uses by default. A result that changes between modes is useful evidence; it does not, by itself, prove a particular policy or launch flag is responsible.
- For CI, verify browser setup against the installed Playwright version. Inspect the launch output and check that the browser installation and cache used by the job match the Playwright version. Treat a cache change as a controlled diagnostic step, not an assumption that every closure means dependencies are missing.
Choose the right comparison when the failure persists
Change one axis at a time and retain the original diagnostics so you can identify which change matters.
| Comparison | What it helps isolate |
|---|---|
Bundled Playwright Chromium versus branded Edge (msedge) |
Whether the failure is associated with using a branded browser version outside Playwright’s bundled Chromium. |
| Edge stable versus beta | Whether the selected Edge channel matters. Use a different channel only if your project permits it. |
| Headed versus headless | Whether execution mode changes the outcome; Edge’s new headless mode and Playwright’s default Chromium headless shell differ. |
| Local versus CI | Whether the failure is specific to the job’s browser installation, cache, or managed environment. |
| Unique automation profile versus reused profile | Whether profile sharing or concurrent launches are implicated. |
Common mistakes that can turn into browser-closed errors
- Guessing an executable path first: use
channel: 'msedge'first. A custom executable path adds a variable and is used at your risk. - Adding several Chromium flags at once: custom arguments may interfere with Playwright. Restore defaults, then reintroduce a required flag individually.
- Reusing a browser profile across jobs: concurrent instances cannot share the same user-data directory. Give each automation run its own directory.
- Changing Edge, Playwright, headless mode, and CI cache together: multiple simultaneous changes obscure the cause. Change one axis and compare the earliest error.
- Assuming the final closure line is the root cause: inspect earlier launch and runtime output; closure may follow another failure.
