To fix lag, stuttering, or disconnects on PlayStation Portal, update the Portal, check its network status while the problem is happening, then test Wi-Fi, network congestion, and the PS5’s connection one at a time. A speed test can confirm throughput, but it cannot rule out weak Wi-Fi, interference, or latency.

Start with the Portal’s software and connection status

  1. Install the latest Portal system software. On the Portal, open Quick Menu > Settings and check for a system software update. Install any available update, then restart the device. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance recommends updating before trying further fixes. Its software information page listed version 6.0.1 when checked on October 7, 2026; available versions can change, so check the Portal rather than assuming that number is current. See PlayStation’s PS Portal software update information.
  2. Check the network while gameplay is affected. Open the Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status. Use this as a starting point while lag or stuttering is occurring, rather than relying only on a test performed at another time. PlayStation’s Portal troubleshooting guide explains this diagnostic option.

Find out whether the problem is Wi-Fi, the internet, or the Portal

Remote Play depends on more than one network connection: the Portal connects to the router over Wi-Fi, and the PS5 also needs a working connection to the network. A problem on either leg can interrupt gameplay.

  • If other devices also cannot use the same Wi-Fi, the problem may be with the network or internet service. PlayStation advises contacting your internet service provider when Wi-Fi is unavailable on other devices.
  • If other devices work but the Portal does not, open Quick Menu > Settings > Network on the Portal and inspect its connection. Move closer to the router and test again.
  • If the Portal connects but gameplay is poor, check Show Network Status during a session and reduce competing network activity before changing router settings.

These checks help narrow down the failing link; they do not identify a single cause for every stutter or disconnect. PlayStation’s instructions cover connection checks for the Portal, PS5, and home network in its Portal troubleshooting guide and Portal user guide and Remote Play setup.

Improve the wireless connection and reduce network congestion

  1. Pause downloads and other heavy network activity. Temporarily stop downloads on devices sharing the connection and test while other high-bandwidth activity is idle. If gameplay improves, contention is a likely contributor.
  2. Move the Portal closer to the router. Retest from a position with fewer walls and other obstacles between the Portal and access point.
  3. Try Ethernet for the PS5. Connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable, then test Remote Play again. This wires the console’s network leg; the Portal still connects over Wi-Fi. PlayStation recommends trying a wired PS5 connection when instability persists. A Cat 6 cable is one option, but the important test is using a wired connection, not a particular cable category.
  4. If the PS5 must stay on Wi-Fi, PlayStation recommends connecting the Portal to the same network as the PS5 and using 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal where available. If your router’s automatic band steering repeatedly moves the Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and causes trouble, PlayStation’s Spanish network setup guidance suggests disabling that feature if the router offers the setting. This is a conditional test, not a setting every household should change. See PlayStation’s Portal network guidance.

Understand the Remote Play speed recommendations

PlayStation Support gives 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum for Remote Play, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. These are throughput guidelines, not a guarantee of low latency or uninterrupted play. A speed test can show whether the connection reaches those rates, but it does not establish that Wi-Fi is stable, free from interference, or uncongested. If speeds meet the recommendation but the Portal still stutters, continue testing the wireless link and competing network activity rather than assuming a faster broadband plan will fix it. Check PS5 Remote Play setup and wake settings

If the Portal cannot find or connect to the console, verify the PS5 is online and that both devices are using the same PlayStation account. On the PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and confirm that Enable Remote Play is on.

If you need the PS5 to wake from Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. Test Remote Play near the PS5 first; PlayStation notes that the Portal may not find or connect to a console if it has been some time since the last sign-in. Try the secondary gameplay check, then contact support

PlayStation also lists Restore Licence in the Portal Quick Menu as a possible gameplay troubleshooting step while streaming a game. Treat it as a secondary check: it is not a replacement for diagnosing Wi-Fi or the PS5’s network connection.

If the problem remains after updating, checking network status, reducing congestion, and verifying the console setup, use PlayStation’s support or Repairs service. Include the exact error code, if one appeared, and note whether other devices could use the same Wi-Fi and whether the PS5 was wired or on Wi-Fi.
