If PhantomJS is not creating a screenshot, the usual cause is a failed page load, rendering before asynchronous content arrives, an invalid output path or extension, an incorrect viewport/clipping rectangle, or a process that exits too early. Start by checking the load status, render only after page.open reports success, save to a writable path with a recognized image extension, and call phantom.exit() only after rendering.
Use the smallest known-good script first
This script follows PhantomJS’s documented capture flow. It creates a page, opens the URL, logs the callback status, renders only after a successful load, and then exits.

Use a recognized extension such as .png, .jpeg, .pdf, .bmp or .ppm; GIF support depends on the Qt build. If this minimal example works, add your real URL and options one at a time.

Diagnose the failure in the right order
1. Confirm the executable and version
Check which binary is running and whether multiple installations are conflicting:
phantomjs --version
which phantomjsOn Windows, use where phantomjs. PhantomJS development is suspended, so old binaries and platform libraries are common sources of incompatibility. The troubleshooting guidance recommends using the latest available version and avoiding conflicting installations.
2. Read the page-open status
Keep the status log in place. A value other than success means the document did not load successfully; rendering at that point can produce no file, an empty file or a blank image. Do not hide the failure by calling page.render unconditionally.

A page can report a successful navigation while its application code throws an exception. Add the documented page.onError handler before opening the page:

};Errors in a site bundle, unsupported JavaScript APIs or a failed initialization request can leave the page visually empty even though the navigation callback completed.
4. Inspect network requests and responses
When stylesheets, images, scripts or API calls are missing, log resource activity to identify the failing URL. A request logger can be as simple as:

};Look for failed status codes, redirects to an authentication page, blocked API endpoints and resources that never receive a completed response. Compare the final URL with the URL you intended to capture.

5. Check HTTPS and TLS
If an HTTP URL renders but its HTTPS equivalent does not, inspect the OpenSSL and SSL libraries used by the PhantomJS installation. An outdated TLS stack may reject a certificate chain or protocol that current sites require. Test the same URL in a current browser to distinguish a site outage from PhantomJS compatibility.
6. Disable the problematic Windows proxy
On Windows, severe delays can come from PhantomJS’s default proxy behavior. The documented workaround is to launch it with:
phantomjs --proxy-type=none capture.jsUse this only when proxy handling is the suspected cause; if your network requires an explicit corporate proxy, configure that proxy instead of disabling it.
7. Verify the output path, permissions and extension
Use an explicit path during diagnosis. A relative path is resolved from the process’s current working directory, which may differ from the directory containing your script. Ensure the directory exists and is writable by the account running PhantomJS.

Fix blank, partial or unexpectedly small images
Wait for asynchronous content
page.open reports navigation completion, not necessarily completion of a single-page application or lazy data request. Delay the render until the content exists. The official examples use a short setTimeout:

});Choose a selector that is added only after the page has meaningful content. If the application never adds it, the timeout is useful evidence rather than a reason to increase the delay indefinitely.
Set the viewport deliberately
PhantomJS’s viewportSize controls the browser viewport. Responsive layouts can therefore render a mobile menu, hide content or change the page height when the default viewport is unsuitable.

});clipRect limits the captured rectangle. Its coordinates and dimensions are in page pixels; an incorrect rectangle can create an empty or unexpectedly small image.
page.clipRect = { top: 0, left: 0, width: 1440, height: 900 };Remove clipRect while troubleshooting to determine whether clipping, rather than loading, is the problem.
Understand full-page limitations
Rendering the viewport is not automatically the same as capturing the entire document. Measure the page and set a viewport or clip rectangle appropriate to the content, but be aware that very tall pages can consume substantial memory. Long pages with lazy-loaded images may also require scrolling or page-specific JavaScript before all content exists.
Process lifetime and exit codes
Render before calling phantom.exit(). Exiting before an asynchronous timer, request or render operation completes can prevent a useful capture. Conversely, omitting phantom.exit() leaves the process running after the work is done.

When PhantomJS compatibility is the real problem
PhantomJS is a scriptable headless browser built on QtWebKit, and its development is suspended. Modern sites may depend on browser APIs, TLS behavior or JavaScript syntax that this older engine does not support. If diagnostics show consistent compatibility failures rather than a script mistake, compare alternatives by JavaScript control and wait conditions, HTTPS/TLS support, output formats, viewport and clipping controls, request diagnostics, deployment burden and maintenance status.
Before changing tools, reduce the failure to a small reproducible page. Record the exact URL, PhantomJS version, operating system, command line, expected result, actual result and a minimized script. This information makes an issue report or migration decision actionable.
