Set and verify the value, use the event the application actually handles—usually change—and treat .trigger('click') as a way to invoke jQuery-managed handlers, not as proof that a real browser click occurred.
Why a jQuery click on a select appears to fail
A select control can be involved in several independent operations. PhantomJS may have found the wrong element, the selected value may not have changed, jQuery may not yet be loaded, the handler may have been attached to an old element, or the test may be checking native behavior while dispatching only a jQuery event.
jQuery documents .trigger() as a way to run event handlers without user interaction. That is useful for testing application code, but it does not reproduce every native event, default action, focus transition, or WebKit behavior. Decide which behavior you need to test
Run the application’s jQuery handler
Use this path when the purpose is to verify code that responds to a selection. Assign the option value, then trigger the event your page logic uses. A page that listens for change should be tested with change, not with an unrelated click:

Exercise browser-level interaction
Use this goal when you need confidence in focus, native event dispatch, default selection behavior, or WebKit’s handling of the control. A synthetic jQuery trigger is not sufficient evidence. Inspect the particular select in the PhantomJS/WebKit version used by your test and verify the resulting value and application state. PhantomJS’s page automation documentation describes the page-side automation model, but it does not define one universal select-click recipe for every page.
Verify the element and its selected value
Start inside page.evaluate, because that function runs in the web page. PhantomJS-side variables, DOM nodes, and closures are not directly available there; pass only serializable arguments and return serializable values, as described in the webpage.evaluate API reference.

Load jQuery before calling it
PhantomJS’s documented pattern loads a library with page.includeJs and performs dependent work from that function’s callback. Calling $ before the callback can race the download and produce an undefined-function error or silently skip the intended action.

});Keep phantom.exit() inside the include callback (or a later completion path). Exiting immediately after page.open can terminate the process before jQuery or the test action is ready. The loading sequence is illustrated in PhantomJS Page Automation.
Check how the handler is bound
Direct binding
A direct binding applies to the element that exists when the code runs:

});If the select is later replaced, the new node has no direct handler. Inspect the current node in evaluate, and bind again after replacement or use delegation.

Delegated binding
Delegation attaches the handler to an ancestor and matches descendants when the event bubbles:

});This is appropriate when a framework or page code recreates the select. Confirm that the ancestor itself exists and that the event reaches it.

jQuery’s event guide covers .on() and event shorthand methods in jQuery Event Basics. A click handler may run when a click is triggered, while selection-dependent logic may be attached to change. Read the page code and test the event that represents the behavior under test.

Messages logged inside the page, including logs from evaluate, are not shown by default. Forward them with page.onConsoleMessage. Add page.onError while diagnosing script exceptions. If state inspection and logging are insufficient, PhantomJS’s troubleshooting guide describes remote debugging with a WebKit-based inspector.

Version and environment checks
PhantomJS is a legacy WebKit-based runtime. The troubleshooting documentation recommends checking the version and warns that multiple installations can cause a different executable to run than the one expected. Capture this information with every failure report:

which phantomjsAlso record the jQuery version loaded by the page or test. A selector, event implementation, or WebKit difference can change the observed result, so do not report a generic “PhantomJS bug” until the executable and page versions are known.

evaluate executes in the page context. Only explicitly passed, JSON-serializable arguments and returned values cross that boundary.
