To troubleshoot packet loss on a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, first record OBS’s network-dropped-frame readings and YouTube’s stream-health messages, then repeat the same test over direct Ethernet with other uploads paused. This helps separate a Wi-Fi problem from trouble elsewhere in the connection; neither a speed-test result nor a YouTube warning alone identifies the faulty network segment.
Check the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance, compare results at the time the problem occurs and at a quieter time, and give your ISP timestamped evidence if wired tests still fail.
What to check before changing anything
“Packet loss” is a useful suspicion, but a symptom such as fluctuating bitrate or dropped frames does not by itself prove where packets are being lost—or that the cause is your ISP. The problem could involve the streaming computer, Wi-Fi, the router, the ISP access connection, an upstream route or YouTube ingestion.
Before changing encoder or network settings, make a record during the failure and during a comparison test at another time. A brief test can miss intermittent congestion.

- Write down the date and time, whether the computer is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and whether the issue is occurring.
- In OBS, note the network-dropped-frame count or percentage and whether the outgoing bitrate stays steady or fluctuates.
- Copy the exact stream-health messages shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Record whether cloud backups, downloads or other large uploads are active.
- Note the results and timing of upload-speed tests, but do not treat a speed result alone as proof that the route to YouTube is stable.
Check the 4K 60fps encoder settings
YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends these video bitrates for 2160p (4K) at 60 fps. They are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular broadband connection can sustain the upload continuously.

Confirm that the selected codec is supported by your encoder and YouTube setup. Keep the frame rate at no more than 60 fps, use constant bitrate (CBR), and check the keyframe interval: YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. If YouTube reports a bitrate or keyframe problem, inspect those settings rather than assuming the broadband line is at fault.

YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitoring stream health while live. Its guidance says 4K streams use normal latency; the low-latency option is not available at 4K. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired test
- Keep the encoder configuration unchanged. Make a controlled comparison so the connection type is the main thing that changes.
- Connect the streaming computer directly to the router with Ethernet, if possible. Repeat the test and record OBS’s dropped frames and YouTube’s health messages. A Cat 6 cable can be a practical way to make this test if you do not already have a suitable cable; it is a diagnostic aid, not a fix for loss elsewhere on the route.
- Pause competing uploads. Stop cloud backups, large uploads and downloads for the test. Keep notes of any household traffic you cannot pause.
- Compare the results. Repeat during the time the fault usually occurs and, with the same wired setup, at a quieter time. Avoid drawing a conclusion from one short run.
If the symptom disappears only on Ethernet, investigate the local wireless segment: signal strength, interference, router placement and other Wi-Fi use. If it continues while wired, Wi-Fi is less likely to be the only cause. The remaining possibilities include the computer, router, ISP access network, upstream path or YouTube ingestion; the comparison does not identify which one is responsible.

Interpret YouTube’s stream-health messages
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes between configuration warnings and insufficient incoming video. Use the exact message alongside OBS’s network-dropped-frame data.
- Bitrate warning: Review the video settings and encoder bitrate against YouTube’s resolution-and-frame-rate guidance. A warning does not establish that the ISP is dropping packets.
- Keyframe warning: Check that the keyframe interval is set to two seconds and does not exceed four seconds. YouTube notes that an interval longer than four seconds can cause buffering.
- “Not receiving enough video” or
videoIngestionStarved: This means YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming; viewers may experience buffering. It is an ingestion symptom, not a diagnosis of the router, ISP or any other individual segment. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API health-status documentation.
When the health status points to incoming video, compare it with OBS’s dropped-frame counter and the wired-versus-Wi-Fi results. If the counter rises and the problem persists over Ethernet, preserve those observations for escalation rather than guessing at the cause.

When and how to contact your ISP
If repeated wired tests show unstable delivery or rising network-dropped frames, send the provider evidence tied to the affected period. Ask it to investigate the access connection and route during those times.

- OBS statistics, including the network-dropped-frame count or percentage and bitrate behavior.
- The exact YouTube stream-health messages.
- Upload-test results and whether other large uploads were paused.
In India, TRAI’s 2024 Quality of Service regulation, dated 2 August 2024, includes latency, jitter and packet-drop parameters.
