First identify the browser profile and connection path: the isolated openclaw browser uses Gateway shared-secret authentication for its standalone loopback API; signed-in Chrome through the chrome extension needs a working, correctly paired relay; and a user or custom remote CDP profile has its own connection and approval requirements. Then run doctor, start, and tabs against that profile to see which layer is failing.
Identify which OpenClaw browser path is failing
Browser-control authentication is not the same as signing in to a website. A browser profile determines which browser OpenClaw controls and where its session state comes from. Changing a Gateway token will not repair a disconnected Chrome extension, and installing the extension will not make the isolated managed browser inherit personal Chrome cookies.

The openclaw profile does not use a personal browser profile; OpenClaw’s Browser profiles documentation puts it plainly: “The openclaw profile never touches your personal browser profile.” Choose a profile based on the session you actually need, not just the error text.
Check the selected profile before changing credentials
Use the profile name explicitly while troubleshooting so a default-profile setting does not send commands to a different browser than the one you intend to test. The browser.defaultProfile configuration controls default selection; CLI commands can override it with --browser-profile <name>. - Decide whether you need the managed browser, signed-in Chrome, or a browser on a remote host.
- Note the intended profile name: commonly
openclaw,user, orchrome, or the name of a configured custom profile. - Include
--browser-profile <name>in each diagnostic command. Do not rotate tokens or reinstall extensions until you have confirmed that commands are targeting the intended profile.
Fix authentication for the standalone loopback browser API
The standalone loopback browser HTTP API uses a Gateway shared secret, not a website login or a trusted identity header. OpenClaw’s Browser security guide says it accepts Gateway token bearer authentication, x-openclaw-password, or HTTP Basic authentication using the configured Gateway password. Use the method that matches the credential configured for your Gateway.
- For token authentication, check
gateway.auth.tokenand send that token as a bearer credential in the form required by the API client. - For password authentication, check
gateway.auth.passwordand use either thex-openclaw-passwordheader or HTTP Basic authentication. - Do not assume Tailscale Serve identity headers or
gateway.auth.mode: "trusted-proxy"will authenticate this standalone API. The security guide explicitly excludes those mechanisms for it.
If OpenClaw generated a browser-control credential for the active authentication mode, retrieve it through the supported local configuration or state path rather than guessing a token or pasting secrets into a support ticket. If an operator needs a stable credential, configure an explicit secret using the documented Gateway authentication settings. Treat tokens and passwords as secrets: do not put them in public logs, screenshots, or troubleshooting posts.
Fix signed-in Chrome access through the extension
An installed extension is not necessarily a connected or authenticated relay. The extension path depends on the intended Gateway and browser profile, a working relay connection, and compatible authentication. OpenClaw’s extension setup guide distinguishes installation and extension discovery from a live enabled connection.

- Choose the extension-backed profile and check that the extension is installed in the Chrome instance you mean to control.
- Inspect the extension’s state and confirm that it reports connected, not merely installed or discovered.
- Confirm that it is paired with the intended Gateway and profile and that the relay port and key match that setup.
- Test actual control with
openclaw browser --browser-profile chrome tabs. A pairing indication or visible tab by itself does not prove that control requests will work.
A stale profile, mismatched port or key, or stricter authentication policy can cause a connection to fail closed. The extension relay’s v2 authentication is preferred. Its legacy bearer compatibility path requires explicit legacy-auth configuration and may reveal a credential on request; do not enable it casually. If you pair manually, treat the full pairing string as a password. Update compatible Gateway and extension components when the current official setup instructions require it: relay behavior and defaults can change between releases.
Run the readiness sequence to isolate the failing layer
Run the commands in order, substituting the profile that matches your setup. Use a harmless URL that is expected to be allowed by your navigation rules.

If it reportsnot reachable after start, investigate CDP readiness and the connection to that browser.tabs: verifies that OpenClaw can enumerate tabs through the selected control path. If this fails, focus on that profile’s authentication, pairing, or connectivity.open: tests navigation only after the browser-control path is responsive. Ifstartandtabssucceed but navigation fails, the CLI documentation says the control plane is healthy and a navigation SSRF policy block is a likely cause.
Do not broaden private-network allowances simply to bypass a policy error. First confirm that the destination is intended and understand why the navigation rule blocked it. See the official CLI guide and browser configuration documentation for current readiness and navigation behavior.

Troubleshoot common browser-control errors

Error wording is a clue, not proof of a single cause. A request routed to a different profile can make an otherwise valid credential appear wrong, so retest using an explicit profile after every configuration change.
Check remote CDP and Gateway deployments safely
When the Gateway and browser or node run on different hosts, authentication is only one part of the connection. Confirm which host runs each component, and whether the configured CDP URL is reachable from the host that must connect to it. Check the intended endpoint, routing, and TLS or WSS setup. The official remote browser documentation and security guide describe the relevant remote-browser and security considerations.

- Prefer HTTPS/WSS and short-lived tokens for remote access.
- Keep Gateway and node hosts on a private network where possible.
- Avoid putting long-lived tokens directly in configuration.
- Treat remote CDP URLs and tokens as secrets; do not publish them in logs or issue reports.
A missing or mismatched local token is not a reason to expose a Gateway or CDP endpoint publicly. Diagnose the host-to-host path and secret configuration instead.

Keep the test repeatable
Record the profile name and the first command in the readiness sequence that fails, but redact tokens, passwords, pairing strings, and remote CDP URLs before sharing diagnostics. Browser CLI syntax, extension relay behavior, and defaults are version-sensitive; check the current official documentation if your installed Gateway and extension no longer match the documented setup. The official behavior cited here is based on documentation current on September 29, 2026; it is not tied to a particular software release.
